Marla | 469 comments I pick A Princess of Mars (Barsoom, #1) by Edgar Rice Burroughs for your February book. It's the first book of the John Carter of Mars series, but I thought it would be too cruel to pick the book on your list: John Carter of Mars The First Five Novels (Barsoom, #1-5) by Edgar Rice Burroughs that's 943 pages long.

I enjoyed this book and I read the first 3 books in the series.

message 54: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments Thank you Marla so considerate. Wow 943 pgs that would be a few months reading LOL

Ok so for you how about, since it Febuary and all:

Dark Desire (Dark, #2) by Christine Feehan

message 55: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments Thanks Elsa, how is your 2018 starting out?

message 56: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments Slow
I'm stuck; tired of reading on the e-reader so I grabbed a book but it's just not working out, hauling it around everywhere is a little inconvenient LOL. Sometimes I get to read sometimes I don't but I have the book with me and its heavy.

For Ash, I gave up buying books for 45 days.
I was colluded into doing it. They (co-workers) made me feel bad, because I have no real bad vices, so I wasn't going to give up anything. I don't smoke, don't drink alcohol (but on occasions), don't drink pop, I don't over do it on chocolate. My only pleasure in life was buying books and they took that away. LOL

On another note, my ex-daughter in law whom has my grandchild is leaving her current husband and is moving in a house we have that was just vacated (they have been having marital problems and so she has decided to leave him after 9 yrs of marriage) So we are trying to helping her move and get settled when she is ready. I hope the separation won't affect the girls to much. (one is my granddaughter and the other one is not, their 6 and 9 (mine)).

Other than that, I'm just working trying to pay off a one of the house we have that we have as a rental (but no rent money coming from that one, letting my sister live there while she gets back on her feet) I'm telling you, I work to support others.

You know what, I have a son and a daughter, his married and has his house and home in order. He never asks me for financial help. My daughter who is 23 in collage lives with us so she is dependent on us, has a good head on her shoulders, and she does cause us any concerns. Why, I ask you, can these two grown females get their act straight.

I need to move out of the country! Any ideas, I kind of like Italy.

LOL

How about you? How has your year started off?

message 57: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments LOL, I just started Dark Desire and I've have the book in my purse. A couple of people have seen it or me reading it and I can see them raise an eyebrow. I'm not far enough into it to know if it's justified or not.

message 58: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments There is a lot of mix reviews on Dark Desire. Good luck.

For March how about:

I saw you have An Irish Country Doctor (Irish Country #1) by Patrick Taylor but it's not on the list you sent sooooo
how about Lichgates (The Grimoire Saga, #1) by S.M. Boyce it has a lot of green.

message 59: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments Oh schucks...I picked you a March book, but I don't see my message. It must have gotten squished. The internet at my sister's place is sketchy at times.

I'm so sorry. Of course, I don't remember what it was...so how about the green cover of Mystic (Soul Seekers, #3) by Alyson Noel

message 60: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments I finished Dark Desire. I wasn't a huge fan, but I can now get rid of it. I thought I would read tons of books while I was in Hawaii, but I'm actually reading less than normal.

Since I'm away from home for so long, I've been reading ebooks and listening to audiobooks from the library, downloaded to my phone. And I'm still not reading the deadtree books that I brought with me. I've only read 3 of them in 6 weeks, and I brought 8 more with me. I've got to read a few more, so I can chuck them instead of mailing them back home. I don't really like ebooks on my reader and I like it less on my phone, but I always have my phone with me, so it's much easier than toting a book around.

I don't normally buy books (because I am too cheap) so I utilize the public library system. I'm on first name terms with the inter-library loan person, and I just request whatever book is my next victim.

For Lent, I always give up chocolate and potato/tortilla chips. They are two of my favorite things and it's tough. Though I do "cheat" on Sundays, but I don't think that will work with buying books. lol

Wow, you are so young to have a grandchild! I am just biding time until I am a grandma. My older daughter 23 just got married in December to her boyfriend of 8 years but she just started work on her PhD, so no babies for a while. My younger daughter is 20 and in her 2nd year of college.

You are so generous to assist your sister and your granddaughter's mother. It's lucky for them that you are in a position to help them and are willing to do so. It must be satisfying that you raised your children to be more independent.

I don't think I explained my situation. I'm in Honolulu, Hawaii from Feb until early April helping my sister who is ill and having treatments. It was my husband's idea for me to come and help her, and he's been very patient with my absence. I work part-time at a high school and they were very supportive and are doing my job until I return.

I was born and raised in Honolulu, but I went to college in the Midwest, met my husband and ended up staying on the mainland. It's really nice spending time with my 87 year old father and my 3 year old niece...oh, and the rest of my brother's family too. I'm lucky that I have this time, though the circumstances are sad. My sister is doing well, so all good there.

message 61: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments Sorry to hear about your sisters health, I hope she is doing better with you there to help her out. you are also a great sister for basically dropping everything and going to help her and your hubby is going for sainthood!!!

I didn't know that was the reason you were going out there, I thought you were going on a fun vacation. Totally see why your not getting a lot read. No worries we still have the rest of the year to catch up. I've also been in a stump and haven't read as much as I though I was going to read this year, my challenge numbers are bad this year, it says I'm so behind.

message 62: by Marla (last edited Mar 29, 2018 08:09AM) (new)

Marla | 469 comments I estimated low this year for my reading because I knew this first quarter would be tough, but I'm almost on schedule. Last year, with the wedding, I was reading some really short books in November and December scrambling to meet my goal even after I adjusted it mid-year. It stresses me a little when it says I'm behind...how silly of me.

The other thing that stresses me out, is library fines. I didn't have time to return my library books before I left and my husband didn't return them in time, so I've got a fine. I've been reading ebooks from the library and whenever I login to checkout or return a book, I feel guilty for having a 30 cents fine.

I am behind on books for this challenge because I've been trying to read the deadtree books that I brought with me, because I don't want to have to carry or mail them back home. Oh, well, I'll catch up later.

message 63: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments For April, I am choosing Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson for you because that sounds like spring time.

message 64: by Elsa (last edited Apr 03, 2018 06:46PM) (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments for april you gave me this list
Then here is my list of books for April on: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

although there's no cheery type of cover, I did find a few titles that went well with easter, like Mary, Mary , Born to Die, Immortal in Death, (Red) Rising, The Prophet (of Yonwood) and The Seal of Solomon

So I'm going with
Born To Die (To Die, #3) by Lisa Jackson - BORN TO DIE

message 65: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments if you send the books by "media mail" it's not that much
I recently shipped three books in the mail labeled Media Mail and the package was only like $7. I'm just saying, because I like my books and wouldn't dare leave them behind. But I'm sure someone would appreciate it, if they ever visited you sister and didn't have anything to read.

message 66: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments Oh, I didn't realize that you could do small packages as media mail. I'll have to remember that. Thanks for the info.

I can't believe that it's been 2 months and that I go home tomorrow. I'll be back again in 3-4 weeks for a short visit, but it will be nice to see my hubby, sleep in my own bed and catch up at work. My sister is doing fantastic and I cannot believe how wonderful this trip has been to spend time with my dad and my toddler niece.

I hope you had a nice Easter. I enjoyed hearing about your other choices for the month. I giggled at Red Rising, but I get it.

I'm hoping that I can get my hubby back to church after being gone so long. I had just got him to start going to mass again, and then I left him for 2 months. Oh well...

Marla | 469 comments Book list for the rest of 2018:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
(actually the same list as previous years with additions :)

message 68: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments That's great your heading back, 10 days is the most I can stay away, I get very antsy by day 7. You made it for months, more power to you.

We are opposites, my hubby is the one that goes to mass regularly, I'm the slacker. He understands (not sure our heavenly father likes it though), I work 7 days a week from 6am to sometimes 11 pm. I don't get much time to sleep, so when I have an afternoon off he lets me sleep. What a life right?

Easter you mention, I worked. LOL Plus it was very cold here and you really couldn't do an outside celebration like people here normally do. When I could get off we would take the kids to the lake and let them swim, we would cook all kinds of meat. Since I had to work, I didn't mind the weather, in fact I like it cold and wet, that way people don't come in to the jail and I can read!

I totally forgot to pick your April selection, I'll do that as well one for May.

Good luck on getting hubby back to mass.

For May I pick Lover Revealed (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #4) by J.R. Ward . I also have read (twice) and am currently on book 10. The group also has a discussion folder for every book in the series

Marla | 469 comments Hey there, sorry that I'm late picking for May. I got home April 6th, left again on April 20th and got back again on the 28th. Whew. I'm still tired. But no more trips back to Hawaii and my sister is doing great!!

I got to visit my older daughter in Seattle on my way home and it was great to see her! She and her husband are doing great. He's been around for so long that it didn't seem strange at all to see them married. I tell people they are just hanging out on their own couch not mine.

I am going to move my younger daughter back from college on Thursday for the summer. It will be so nice to have her home.

Wow, I used to work 7 days a week when I first opened my craft and antique shop for a year and a half, then I got someone to cover Sundays, then I started working part-time 2 days at the high school and I only worked 3 days at my shop. It was great closing my shop 2 years ago! I am loving only working 2 days a week. I usually work 8-12 hour days, but in 2 days.

7 days a week was exhausting. Did you say that you work at the jail? I can't survive on less than 6 hours of sleep. Why do you have to work so many hours? That would be tough on your marriage too.

message 71: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments For May, I pick Roses by Leila Meacham for you and Happy Mother's Day!

message 72: by Marla (last edited May 31, 2018 03:08AM) (new)

Marla | 469 comments I am all settled back at home and the lady that my husband hired to declutter our house while I was in Hawaii is doing a great job. I am a pack rat, so I'm glad to have the help, but it stresses me out to throw things away.

I just finished Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning . It's an interesting premise but I have moments that I want to shake Mac. I haven't decided if she should trust Barrons yet, but the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I will have to listen to the next book to see what else happens.

message 73: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments For June, I pick A Million Junes by Emily Henry , because it's perfect!!

Happy June!

message 74: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments Well, I am back in Hawaii and I've been here most of June because my sister wasn't feeling well. But I leave on July 1st to go home, so I'll pick for you now.

message 75: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments Hope you enjoy: The Summer I Turned Pretty (Summer, #1) by Jenny Han

message 76: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments My sister is done with radiation. She had a rough 3 weeks, but her last week went much better. It was a much busier trip. She had radiation treatments every weekday and wasn't feeling well first thing most mornings and every evening for 3 weeks. It's a rare side effect to be nauseous with radiation, but it's unusual to not be sick at all on chemo, so she just has to be different.

Since I was home in Hawaii for most of June, I was there for my father's 88th birthday, Father's Day and to move him into his new senior apartment. The last week, my sister only had a few days of radiation and she was feeling better, my brother-in-law was visiting Hawaii with his wife and my nephews, and my father moved. It was a crazy week.

I'm going to send you a message, because I haven't heard from you for 2 months. I hope I haven't offended you, I do talk too much and I am much too entitled and opinionated. We can just go back to picking a book each month and not chatting at all.

message 77: by Elsa (last edited Jul 09, 2018 05:36PM) (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments Wow, you have had a busy summer and it isn't even over yet! Sorry to hear that your sister had to go through radiation, darn I thought she was done and on the road to getting better in June. Marla, how old is your sister, I don't remember if you said she was older or younger than you?

I love our little chats!! I just didn't want to bother you since I knew you had a lot to do.

Your father, 88, now that's a happy event. Is he doing ok, with the move and his health?

I would tell you all the exciting things I've been doing, wait, I haven't been doing anything because I've been working 7 days a week. You asked why I work so much....well I have a granddaughter who is 10 and she likes money, lol. Also, the jail has been understaff for a few years and when I know their not going to have help in an area that I can work, so I stay and help them out. It's all voluntary, I don't have to work if I don't want too, but until we get enough staff, I will continue to help out where I can. Truth I rather be at work then go home and do house work, yuk. LOL Hubby is fine with it, he just worries I don't get enough rest. He has his own business that keeps him pretty busy 6 days a week. We try to do dinner as a family on Sunday evenings, sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't but its all good. Been married for almost 30 years, we are at the point that it's till death do us part. hehe. My daughter is still at home she's 23, she goes to a local collage, when we start missing each other we go to lunch and catch up. She is also my delivery food driver hahah, when I work doubles I can't leave my post, so she picks up my food and brings me coffee when I work till midnight. Love her I don't know what I'm going to do when she finishes her BA and enlists. Maybe my granddaughter will be driving by then.

Anyway it's great to hear from you, keep chatting with me. I'm guessing that you want me to go back to the original list to pick from correct?

message 78: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments How about

June: Shadow Game (GhostWalkers, #1) by Christine Feehan
July: Lola and the Boy Next Door (Anna and the French Kiss, #2) by Stephanie Perkins

message 79: by Marla (last edited Jul 25, 2020 09:19PM) (new)

Marla | 469 comments Hi Elsa! Thanks for writing back.

And I have been wanting to read both of those books! I'm excited.

Summer is almost over for us. My younger daughter goes back to college in two weeks to help with football camp. And my high school job gets busier in August.

My sister is doing much better, thanks. She's older than me, but no longer married and no kids, so she seems younger (which irritates me to no end). She's a very successful business woman. Her lovely hair falling out has been very stressful for her, but she's doing okay.

My mother's cousin's daughter has just been diagnosed with the same rare breast cancer that wasn't supposed to be genetic. It makes me worried for my girls.

My father is enjoying his new Senior apartment. He says the food is really good. My mother passed away over 20 years ago, so my father is quite independent. I think he's happy to be around people and not isolated in his house, but he doesn't worry about making friends. The senior living community has mah joong twice a week and he's been playing with them and also their attending exercise classes.

Unfortunately, my father is really difficult with my siblings. I forget how unreasonable he can be because he has always been much better with me. So I'm so glad that I was there for all those months and I could help get him to move. I think he's happier and I am sure that he is safer.

message 80: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments So glad to hear everything is going well and kind of back to normal.

I'm picking I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh for August

message 81: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments Finished A Million Junes by Emily Henry and The Summer I Turned Pretty (Summer, #1) by Jenny Han

A Million Junes was odd, it was like that book The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold , part reality part fantasy. Weird.

The summer I Turned Pretty, now that one I really enjoyed. Totally did not see the final on that one, pretty sure she was either going to end up alone if she couldn't have that one brother.
I really liked the ending.

Thanks for the great picks. Ready for September (my bday month!!)

message 82: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments Also just FYI I really tried to get into Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson but to me it was a flop. I read about 50% before I gave up. It was more for middle schoolers, which normally doesn't bother me, I loved Harry Potter and they were geared toward children, but this one just didn't do it for me.

message 83: by Marla (last edited Aug 28, 2018 10:42PM) (new)

Marla | 469 comments Hi there, I am soooo sorry, I forgot to pick for you in August.

I haven't been reading my GoodReads notifications and messages. I need to work on making that a habit again. I was so behind on updating all my challenges that I've been working on that.

Life is finally settling back down. Just in time for work to get busier and I'm planning to go over to Notre Dame for a football game every other weekend. I hope they have a good season.

Aug: Wildefire (Wildefire #1) by Karsten Knight
Sept: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

message 84: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments Don't worry about it, I had plenty to keep me busy. Glad that everything is back to normal. I also enjoy collage football. I won't go to the stadium but I will def watch our OU team on TV.

I've hear good things about my September pick, can't wait to read that one.

I'll take a look for your September pick and post later. Don't forget to come back and look. LOL

message 85: by Marla (new)

Marla | 469 comments Notre Dame won their first game ~ Yay!!

I will try to remember to look for my book, but I'm kind of behind on my reading for this challenge, so I've got books to read. So no hurry.

My sister-in-law gave me Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, but I haven't read it yet, so let me know what you think.

message 86: by Elsa (new)

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments I tried reading this one, but I had to return it to the library before I finished it. I'll eventually get it again and finish it. It was a pretty good story.

Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris

I like the way you think. For November, how about Touch of Frost (Mythos Academy, #1) by Jennifer Estep and Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson for December.

Marla | 469 comments I haven't been on GR much cuz both my daughters were home back to back and then my sister came to visit. It's been a great October playing with everyone. And I still read quite a bit this month but I'm behind on my reviewing.

The good news is my bald spot that Frank saw on my head at the end of August seems to be getting fuzzy. The bad news it was racquetball-sized by the time they got it to stop growing and the shots I have to get aren't much fun.

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments My sisters live next door and my mother lives two blocks over so I get to spend time with them every week. I don't realize that most families don't have the chance to stay that close to each other.

Glad you have some growth back. What caused it, do the doct know maybe when I go I can tell them to check that first. Mine isn't round mine is long along the middle towards the back. Mine is more than likely caused because I keep a bun in my head 24-7.

As for the shots, I don't envy you, I hate shots too. I don't even get flu shots and their free at work!! I rather get sick!

Marla | 469 comments In Hawaii, my father's mother lived with us and my mother's parents lived 2 blocks away. My aunt lived a mile away. Now, you can see my brother's condo down the street from my sister's condo. And my father lives a mile away. I miss having my family around. You're very lucky to be surrounded by family. We have my in-laws across town, but they are more dependent on us than fun.

They have no clue why I have my bald spot, but it started in August and grew scary quickly. One doctor said stress, another said no it's fungal, the next doctor said no we don't know what causes it. But they knew how to fix it. My girls hair receded in the front when they had really tight pony tails every day when their hair was long. And their hair grew back when they stopped it.

I don't usually mind shots, but it's a dozen or more shots into my scalp. My family doctor didn't have right medicine or the tiny needles the dermatologist has and it was ugly. I work in a school so I always get a flu shot.

Though, I get it, I hate throwing up and I will do most anything not to. I know I'd feel better afterwards, but I just won't do it.

I had a physical last week and my doctor asked about my migraines. I have hormonal headaches, 5 or so days a month, and 2 - 3 migraines a year. I said they've been better...sigh, I had a migraine on Friday AND Sunday. That hasn't happened in years. Stupid, I jinxed myself. And I've had a headache for a week...I'm sick of it, but I think the weather is making it worst.

Sigh, he also said that at my age, they may never go away and I may always have these headaches. I hope he's wrong, because it was the absolute worst 3 years ago, but it is no picnic this week. I'm hoping they gradually get better as I get older...I can only hope.

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 596 comments Dozen or more in your scalp! I can't say I wouldn't do it though. There's just two things I wouldn't give up on and that is my hair and my boobs. I've noticed I'm also getting more headaches and camps and I came to the conclusion that it's my age. The older I get the worse they seem to get.

You have a great Thanksgiving!
I'll check in after.

Marla | 469 comments Lol, I like my hair, but my brain and being able to see and EAT would be my favorite things.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

Dani is my cooking helper and she won't be home this year, so I'll see how it goes.
