Folks, we have this thread open for introductions. You can always read all of the other welcomes and introductions in the other thread which we have closed because the thread is too huge (almost 7000 posts). So let us work to get this thread as large in due time. We are happy to welcome all of our global members from at least 150 different countries around the world.

This is # one of our rules and guidelines to be a member.

My name is Robert Hays and I am a retired journalism professor at the University of Illinois, U.S.A. My principal history interest is military history. I have a modest collection of books on World War II, primarily the European theatre, and I am a great fan of Gen. George S. Patton Jr. In terms of American history, I am interested in the so-called "Indian Wars" and, to a lesser extent, Civil War history and newspaper history. I feel strongly that "what has come and gone" is an immensely important foundation too often ignored.

Christopher was kind enough to post the Mechanics of the Board thread first under More Information - if you need some assistance - just practice on that thread and we are here to help. When you get the hang of it - they take about 5 seconds tops.

Newspaper history is a fascinating subject and we have a thread as Christopher pointed out that could use some book additions. In our lifetime - the magazine and newspaper industries have gone through more than a few ups and downs and the internet is changing things dramatically.

We certainly would like to hear your thoughts on these subjects so please join in on the discussions.

Hi I'm Andrew. I live in Hamilton, New Zealand. I'm a former teacher, but I'm not working at the moment and have plenty of time for reading. Although my teaching subjects were Accounting and Business I did a number of history papers 30 years ago at university. My main historical interests tend to be social history, looking at the ordinary people in times gone by. I particularly enjoy economic history. The most interesting paper I ever took at uni was the history of sport and its effect on society.

My name is Victor , I am 56 yrs old a Cardiac Nurse, but currently working as a self employed Driving Instructor .
Born in Stepney, London , UK from 1st generation Poles .
My father was in the Polish Army, fought at Stalingrad, and then at Monte Cassino.
My parents settled here in England , after the war .

Victor, welcome - we are also delighted to have you join the group.

You will find that we are an international group from over 150 countries - many are from the UK and some even from Poland. You will find an avid military group here and there are many threads which will interest you about the military and various other conflicts.

You have to share some of your father's experiences on the threads - it is always better when we are able to discuss history with someone who experienced it or who knew somebody who did.

When I go to the UK next time - you can teach me how to navigate those roundabouts and stay on the left side of the road - both which boggle my mind. Usually I just leave the driving to others - especially on those European autobahns where you think that folks are driving at the speed of sound (smile).

Your background as a cardiac nurse would come in handy too in your profession when folks panic (smile).

My name is Jacek, I am Polish of origin, and very much looking forward to participating in this group.

I have always been a keen reader, starting with SF in my teens (Stanislaw Lem is a favorite: the greatest Polish SF writer), then moving into good old adventure fiction (Frederick Forsyth, Alistair McLean, Tom Clancy). When those started to become repeatable, then caught "the history bug", and still having it.

For me, history of wars brings all the adventure and tragedy of real life to us, and also allows us to learn from our ancestors. And wars in fact are periods of concentration of those in a short period, so in fact "amplify" those effects. They are like a history fast-forwarded...

My favorite topics is therefore history of wars, with a strong interest in the human aspect. I want to understand the why behind the what, and what motivated the actors to do what they did. I am less interested in the technical side, which in itself does not form a compelling story, besides maybe a small specialist circle.

I read a lot on WW2, with no particular specific area of interest, so European and Pacific theatre in equal measure. I have a fairly good overview of the overall course of war, and am now interested in deeper analysis of specific events.

Besides WW2, I have somewhat lesser interest on American Civil War and Napoleonic wars (which is an area I am building up).
