Good idea Kenjii! I have a question for everyone. Just something that I've been wondering, and asking a bunch of book freaks like me would be best.

Did any of you get in trouble growing up for reading too much? My mom was constantly telling me to put the books down and go watch tv, play a video game, go outside, etc. In fact, my parents never grounded me to my room, they would ground me from my books! They would literaly box up all of my books until I wasn't grounded anymore. Luckily for me, I was a bit smarter than them. :) I always had 5-10 books hidden under my bed.

Just wondering if anyone else had similar experiences!

lol.. Kelley I am 23 and I still get yelled at for buying too many books and reading too much.. I'm serious. I have to hide my BN bags.. and am constantly being told that we have too many bookshelves in the house.

I always say.. it's better that I spend my money and time on books rather than other unattractive behaviors lol.

lol, I always hide the books that I buy too! You'll be like me whenever you move. You'll have more boxes of books than anything else! I seem to move once a year, and after the first time, all of my family members that help me move told me that from now on, I have to move my books myself. They'll move anything else, but not the books!

I really cannot believe your parents did that. Alot of parents have trouble getting their kids to read and yours were stopping you from it.

Yeah, I remember my dad used to say.. "stop reading, you need to go out and live". Not like I had no life or anything.. I just enjoyed reading rather than sitting around on my ass watching t.v

I'd rather read than watch t.v, at least I'm extending my vocab. :)

nope my mom was a reader so she never had a problem with me reading. although she used to taunt me when i would bragged about reading my 100 something pages in a few hours. she'd say " Those are kiddie books try reading my books in a day". I took the challenge and started devouring her VC Andrews and Jackie Collins books and I never looked back.

Kelley Ann: My Mom actually thought there was something wrong with me. I would spend my summer indoors reading and writing my stories. She'd force me to make friends. I hate to be social b/c most ppl don't relate to reading like I do. Great question!

Kenjii - That's just like me! My mom couldn't understand my love of books. She doesn't read very often and she finishes a book even less often. I've never been the social butterfly, and she is. Personally, I'm happy with just a handful of great friends, and I was never that kid that went out with my friends every day.

Kelley Anne: I don't get how being shallow is fun. That is how I see what going out and laughing at silly jokes is about for the most part. I like being funny and silly but for the most part talking about what I am reading or things I have learned works for me. I get bored easily unless its about books lol.

I never got in trouble with my parents for reading, but I did get in trouble at school because I would always have a book under my desk during math...

lol.. I hate math, so I congratulate you for finding a way out of it!!

Heh, I used to read during class all the time.

I used to read with the book on the desk during math. Teachers can't really complain about you not paying attention when you still get A's through the entire course.


Currently my wife and I are trying to get our books organized. We've set aside a room (should, I think, have been the living room) to be the Library. It's got six bookcases and counting, and we need more space to put away our books.

Also, we need a card catalog.

lol, I always had teachers having to tell me to put the books away! My fav though was my science teacher. He always just had you read the text book, didn't do too much actual teaching. So, I would kinda prop the text book up on my desk, slide what ever book I was currently reading in on top of it, and he thought that I was reading the text book!

Also, has anyone else perfected the art of walking and reading at the same time? I'm nowere near as good at it now as I was in school I never used to walk between classes without my nose in a book. lol, I'm amazed I didn't hit into walls and knock myself out!

I've never been really good at reading and doing other things. Like if a t.v is on, I have a hard time concentrating on what I'm reading. I don't mind music as much, as long as it's low.

But I definitely wouldn't be able to walk and read at the same time!! I would have concussions left and right.

Consider Google Docs....I starting tracking my home LIB on there. So easy!

I am going to try and quote this like I heard it b/c it reminded me of how I felt about not like the book Witchling.

When you are trying to focus on something that is not visually stimulating (for me I am a VERY visual person) the need to become distracted becomes very strong. For me the imagery was not the strongest I had come across and I felt my mind wandering like every 2 seconds. It was weird! I never really had that happen. I have not liked books before but this time it was like my eyes couldn't focus on the words.

When I am highly immersed and engaged (video games, books, writing) the world around melts away and I can see through that characters eyes. That is why I rarely pick up horror anymore. Not a big baby or anything, but the visuals ick me out now. Romance is a nicer genre =)

London Girl: It may not be the book's content but the way it is written. It seems interesting and all but the writing style hinders the message. Plus I couldn't firmly form any images to keep the flow going. I give a book anywhere from 20-50 pages before I pull the plug.

Completely off topic... Just want to say I'm getting so FCKING tired of rude people!!!! If one more person either lets a door fall into my face, or doesn't say thank you when I hold the door for them I think I may scream.

What is wrong with people? Hasn't anyone taught them manners???? Now, I am not an old cranky person. I'm 23, and my parents taught me to be polite. What the hell is wrong with people these days that no one can say thank you or please, or a hold a damn door open for someone?? I mean really.

I was at the movies last night with one of my friends, and as we were walking into the complex from the garage, I held the door for the same family 3 times. 3! and I didn't get a single thank you. WTF? I don't work there, I was being polite. ugh.

Sorry... just had to rant. :)

Same with rude people with shopping carts. I get ran into & cut off ALL the time. I just roll my eyes and hold myself back from making a scene!

Honestly, I think that for some reason people stopped teaching their kids basic courtesy and social skills. Now those kids have grown up and aren't teaching their own kids either. It's ridiculous that number of people that don't know common courtesy and know how to say Thank You.

I mean, this is an issue that really irks me. There's no reason to be disrespectful. It doesn't take much to simply say thank you if someone holds a door for. That is common courtesy.

I mean the other day I was in B&N (surprise surprise lol) and this woman had a stroller and two other kids with her so I stepped out of the way and held the door open. She just waltzed right past me. Umm.. seriously? Even if I had a uniform on.. you should still say thank you. ugh. people.

I am so excited! K, backstory. When I was in high school (sophmore year if I am remembering correctly) I checked out a particular book at the school library. I kept it for the entire school year. lol, I'm not even exagerating. The librarian knew me so well that she just kept renewing without me even asking her to and I turned it back in on the last day of school. Well, for several years now, I have been trying to remember what that book was. I knew that it was kind or a modern day fairy tale, but that's all that I could remember. Well, today I was pretty bored at work, so I spent a bunch of time just reading book reviews on here. I just kept clicking on books, reading about them, and then clicking on another book that was listed on the side of the page as being similar. Well, I FOUND MY BOOK!!! It's called Briar Rose by Jane Yolen I am just so excited that I get to read it again. I think that I might just have to buy it! Anyways, I was excited and just wanted to share!

I know there are some book from when I was young that I would love to find but can't remember the title or even much about them except that I was liked them. Yours looks like a good book too - I'll have to check it out!

Kelly Anne - I love finding long lost favorites! I hope it's as good as you remember...

I was wondering if you guys had any particular book related pet peeves. I go to the library a lot, and I hate when the author's picture and bio is covered up by the library security tag. Drives me crazy!
Do you guys have any little things like that that bug you?

I have some peeves too Nichole. For instance, I cannot!! buy a book if the covers are bent or pages are folded. How irritating. Oh and when people bend the book while reading and it ends up breaking the spine and causing those crease marks. That irritates me as well. Plus dog earring pages.. get a bookmark! Honestly lol.

I also despise when people write in books. Ick. I know some people like to note favorite passages and stuff, but use a post it people!! lol.

hmm what else... I'm sure there are more. lol.

You know, it's a real pet peeve of mine when a series starts out always released in paperback and then all of a sudden they release the newest book in hardcover! I'm one of those people that buys more books than any other way of reading them. I rarely borrow books or go to the library, etc. But it's annoying when I am putting books on my book shelf and all of a sudden I have to go from paperback to hard cover! If it's a series that I absolutely love, I still usually end up getting it, even as I'm mad about it. The House of Night series is coming out with #5 on the 5th, and I just found out that it's coming out in Hardcover. That's a series that I have been waiting and waiting on, and I own the other 4, but I don't like the series well enough to buy hardcover. So, I guess that I am just going to have to hope that my library ends up getting it.

I hate that too! I mostly borrow from the library, but I'll buy a series I really like. So my strategy is to borrow it from the library, and then buy the paperback when it's released.
But I hate hardcovers anyway, not just because they don't match the other paperbacks in the series (though I'm very anal about that as well...)
but because I just don't like reading them. They're harder to hold, and you can't curl up with them the way you can a paperback. Or stick it in your bag and haul it around with you. Hardcovers suck...

Jess: I just checked this thread a little late and agree w/ you Jess. I am 28 and feel the shift from ppl have some decency to practically none. Using the example (not excuse) of what you see is what you get. The media influences a lot of what kids want to be when the parents aren't there to monitor. So when both parents aren't there to train the kids up the right way. All they have to learn are outside influences. Think of all you see into today's media and figure how someone without any guidance will end up. The fracture of the family ties is was is affecting society today in a major way. And it trickles down to ppl not even having common sense to say please and thank you.

lol I agree. Hardcovers suck. And now I think Kenyon's books are coming out in hardcover. that is very disappointing because I have every one of her books. I even broke down and bought the hardcover of acheron... but I don't know how long I can wait to read her new releases.

I agree. I blame the media for a lot of problems today, but honestly it eventually comes down to families. It used to be that families taught these kinds of things to their children, and now I find it comes down to schools and teachers to do that. As if teachers don't have enough to do (lol.. I can't help but feel bad for myself in this aspect since I am a soon to be teacher) but now we have to replace parents.. jeeze.

I have another pet peeve -
When people here on goodreads post reviews of books in the paranormal genre (i.e. the books all of us love), give it 1 star and proceed to bash the entire genre. (Especially when said book is second or third in a series....)

If you don't like the genre, don't read the books! Write your review based on the merits of the book you read. Don't sit there and bash on a genre that tons of people love because you don't get it or it doesn't live up to your pretentions standards. Grrr.

I agree Nichole!! I've read some PNR books that are TERRIBLE, but that doesn't mean the whole genre sucks. Just as I have read mystery or fiction books that sucked, but I don't swear off all of the books in that genre.

I hate when people bash other people's books of interest. Everyone is different and enjoy different types of books. I mean, I don't enjoy biographies, so therefore I don't read them. lol. Is that hard for other people to do? Or do they just decide to read a book they don't like so that they can write a "scathing" review. ugh. people.

It's so un-helpful to read reviews like that. They give the book a terrible review because they don't like the genre... well pooh on you, because I do like the genre and your review was a complete waste of my time. If you don't like paranormal books, don't read them. Don't go ahead and read a book you know you won't like and then tell everyone how much you hated it.
It's almost like they're looking for an opportunity to insult the people that do like those books.

exactly, at that point I just want to say "Keep your opinion to yourself." I can understand if someone is a reader of the genre and really disliked a book. But if you're just writing the review to show people that you don't like the genre, well then bite me.

Oh and not to detour from the topic at hand, but talking about pet peeves! I went to Barnes and noble to find a copy of Katie Macalister's Sex and the single vampire.. for some reason I couldn't find it anywhere!

Anyway.. lol, I saw this woman sitting in one of the chairs and she was reading a book. Which is fine, but she bent back the damn spine so far that it was broken, and had that nasty line running down the middle!! If you're going to do that, BUY the book. Because otherwise, someone else has to come and buy the book that you damaged.

That's awful. I will admit, I once read an entire Harry Potter book just going to Barnes & Noble after work for a few days. But I'm always VERY careful to treat the book nicely if I do that. That's awful! (Maybe she was planning on buying it and just wanted some time away from her kids at home??? We can hope, right?)

I've noticed that sometimes at the bookstore you can only find the most recent book in a series, or the first book and the most recent, and they don't actually have all the books there. You're a book store! You're supposed to have the books!

Nichole and Jess: I enjoyed reading your exchange (getting away from kids? Never! hehe.) I try and treat my books in the best care b/c I swap and I like for the books to be presentable. I thought it was just me being me when I did that.

I bought Night Huntress Book 2 and 3, BDB Book 3 and Demonica Book 2 (with the intention of ONLY getting one book, lol) and I didn't get the vibe that the checkout girl was chiding me for my book selection. I never had to buy a new book before. I always get new releases online.

Kenjii - that's good that no one said anything to you about your purchases.. which I must say, you picked very well!! lol.

Nichole - I have definitely read some books at B&N too, but I don't bend back the covers. How obnoxious. lol, if she needed a break from the kids, it's a great place to go, but be nice to the books! lol.

I'm having the same issues with books and series but with the library. For example, i'm reading the Jaz Parks series by Jennifer Rardin. I read the first 3, and put in for the 4th. But when I went to find the next one, it wasn't there!! Seriously? lol.. so now I'm supposed to buy the last one of the series. how annoying. The same thing happened with Adrian Phoenix's series. I read the first one Rush of Wings, and the second one isn't at the library. but i refuse to buy it because I didn't like the first one that much. So now I'm stuck lol. I even checked PBS and they don't have either of them. ::sigh::

Oh, I had the same issue with the Adrian Phoenix books, but I did go buy it because I absolutely LOVED the first one. And then I recently went and bought the first one so I'd have them both to re-read until book 3 comes out.

But I had that little "anal book-buyer" problem. Book 2 is only available in trade paperback, so that's what I have. But when I went to buy book 1, it was available in TPB or mass market. So I had to decide if I wanted to pay twice as much just to have a matching set...
I ultimately decided to save myself a few dollars and bought the cheaper book, but I think it's going to bug me that they don't match.

LOL, yes, that's maddening. Adrian's publisher has recently decided to publish all of their UF books in mass market paperback, to try to reach a wider audience. As a result, the third book will be released in mass market. I've currently got the books in trade, so I'll rebuy them so that my set matches - because I'm anal and I loved the series!

Sounds like I made the right choice then! I'll just have to swap out book 2 eventually.

Why do publishers do that? It really is annoying, especially when a series is all paperback (ahem.. the dark hunter series) and then all of a sudden they are coming out in hardcover!! I'm all for saving the environment, but I hate when hardcovers have the recycled pages that make the edges all uneven. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Or am I insane? lol.

I think they do uneven edges on purpose - like it makes the book seem older or classier or something? I assume some people like it... I'm not a big fan, myself.

And the reason for going hardcover is simple - moolah. But again, I'm totally with you. I hate hardcovers.

Yeah, Ash's book had the weird uneven edges. Am I correct in my belief that her summer releases for the series are now going to be in hard back while the winter releases will remain paperback? I wasn't too bothered by Ash's book being in hard back because, well, it was Ash. However, as much as I like Fang and Aimee (and I am a sucker for the were hunters), I'm not sure it warrants a hard back. I would say the same for the BDB, but my obsession with that series resulted in me buying the hard copy book club versions, so I'm set for Rehv's book to be in hard back.

I think the HC of the DH series was b/c is would have had to been split into 2 books anyway. Being over 700 pages and all. The same with Fang and Amiee's story. There will be a lot of history. So instead of doing 2books (which would cost about the same as 1 HC right?). As far as the uneven pages I thought that was a LIB. book thing. LOL. I never bought a HC so I never paid attn to the pages until you mentioned it just now.

I always thought those pages had something to do with recycled paper, I just got the hardcover of the story of edgar sawtelle from the library and it also had the uneven pages. which drives me crazy...

I'll consider the e-book =) or rent it from the LIB. I never did buy the series. I only started reading PNR when I swapped thru PBS. But yeah I can understand the want to have all the books in your favorite series.

I don't know where everyone else lives.. whether it's in the US or outside the US. But I want to share my enthusiasm of the change of weather!!

Here in NY, omg, so nice out. I played tennis on Sunday and I was in a short sleeved shirt and it was fantastic. I think it might be time to put away the UGGS and bring out the flip flops. YAYYY!!
