The first book I've finished this year! I was browsing, looking for an audiobook to listen to, when one of the Hercule Poirot books by Agatha Christie popped up. I realised I'd always meant to read at least one, so I thought I'd start with the first Poirot story 😊

This was my book club's pick of the month for the festive season, so I was determined to finish it, but I'm not gonna lie, I struggled with this one. Two stars because it wasn't a total dumpster fire and that's what I reserve the one star for. I truly hope other people enjoy it more than me, but let's get into it...

From the start, none of the characters were very likable to me, I couldn't relate to anyone and our main character Keeley is kind of This was my book club's pick of the month for the festive season, so I was determined to finish it, but I'm not gonna lie, I struggled with this one. Two stars because it wasn't a total dumpster fire and that's what I reserve the one star for. I truly hope other people enjoy it more than me, but let's get into it...

From the start, none of the characters were very likable to me, I couldn't relate to anyone and our main character Keeley is kind of a weirdo. I can understand this family still struggling with the loss of Keeley's sister, but seriously, they treat their adult daughter like a child and it was incredibly annoying to read (for reference, I'm roughly the same age as the main character). Our other main character, Ethan, was just as annoying. Again, I understand that grief changes a person, but this guy is 28 years old and he acts like a child. So our love interests are someone who is treated like a kid and someone who acts like one despite being co-owner of 5 hotels in Paris. Just grand.

Speaking of Paris... The language barrier was not handled very well in this book. It's never clear when people are speaking French and when they're speaking accented English. Also, the author randomly puts words in French that don't need to be, like saying marché instead of market and legumes instead of vegetables. It just came across as Keeley being pretentious. Speaking of pretentious, Keeley's best friend was the worst. Lovely that she came with her to Paris, but omg I could never be friends with this woman. She was so incredibly disrespectful, she came across like a rude American tourist like you see in the movies (and in real life lol).

Those two things were things I wanted to highlight, the characters and the setting/language. Both didn't work for me. I've got a lot more problems with this story, but I don't want to get into all my nitpicks here. I'll just mention the one thing I liked, and that was Erica. And well, obviously her story made me sad.

So yeah, in a nutshell, this book dragged a pretty straightforward story out for aaaages, only to rush the ending. I didn't like the characters, the setting didn't feel realistic/genuine and the only part I actually liked was Erica and that's my review. I'll save the details and rants for my book club. ...more
