Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

I am freaking loving this series and I'm only two books in and I'm in love with L. =)

Look at my Funko of L =) I wanted to get Ryuk too but they messed his up. I don't like how it looks one bit and that makes me mad because he's so cool. Sigh....

 :

OH My Lord! I want them to take down Light! I hate him!

 :

Okay, in the beginning when he was only killing evil people that wasn't so bad but now he's killing innocent people. And then when he killed someone I liked and I'm guessing killed the person that would have come the closest to catching him, I wanted to scream bloody murder! I mean that person was smart and first and then they got their stupid on and he had them. Although, I'm hoping that in the next book that person will be like: Surprise! He didn't get me. Sigh....

Anyhoo, I'm loving these books (like I said) and can't wait for more!

NOTE:

If anyone can give me more recommendations for Manga I would appreciate it. I have gotten a few from my Goodreads friend, Petrik, but I'm still looking for me. Hook me up with lists people!

Okay, this is so amazing! I literally freaked out because I cannot take it how amazing it is. And this is my second time reading it!)

Team Kira all the way and I feel no shame at all!
And I want Ryuk! I would give him all of our apples!
Btw, can I say that detective Raye Penber deserved what he got? I seriously disliked the way he talked to his fiancée, Naomi.

デスノート 2 合流 = Death Note Gold, Vol. 2 = Death Note, Vol. 2: Confluence (Death Note #2), Tsugumi Ohba, Takeshi Obata (Illustrator), Pookie Rolf (Translator)

In Tokyo, an intelligent yet disaffected high-school student named Light Yagami finds the "Death Note", a mysterious black notebook which can kill anyone as long as the user knows both the target's name and face.

After verifying that the notebook works and initially being terrified of its god-like abilities, Light begins to consider the possibilities of the Death Note's abilities and sets out to create a utopian world without crime, killing numerous high-profile Japanese criminals, before eventually targeting international criminals and felons around the world. Five days after discovering the notebook, Light is visited by Ryuk, a "Shinigami," beings inspired by the Japanese god of death and the Death Note's previous owner. Ryuk, who is invisible to anyone who has not touched the Death Note, reveals that he dropped the notebook into the human world out of boredom and is amused by Light's actions.

"Light thinks he's put an end to his troubles with the FBI--by using the Death Note to kill off the FBI agents working the case in Japan! But one of the agents has a fiancee who used to work in the Bureau, and now she's uncovered information that could lead to Light's capture. To make matters worse, L has emerged from the shadows to work directly with the task force headed by Light's father. With people pursuing him from every direction, will Light get caught in the conflux?"--Page 4 of cover.

I’m on BookTube now! =)

Okay, I said I’d give my two cents on this and here I am doing just that:

I loved Volume 2 and it was very intriguing for various reasons! For one Light is no longer only killing prisoners and criminals but also started to go after the people that hunt him. Which was quite a change in pacing because wow! I’m always surprised how ruthless Light can be. On the one hand he’s that impeccable and perfect student and on the other hand he’s a merciless killer that feels no remorse about the people he kills. Not even if they are decent people that try to stop him.
Talk about having two faces. XD

I’m very curious where this series is going because sooner or later L. will find out about Light’s identity and even though he might be a step ahead of him right now I’m pretty sure L. will catch up eventually. He’s a very clever one and thinks similar to Light.

This said I wasn’t all too sorry about Raye’s death because I certainly didn’t appreciate the way he spoke to his fiancée. I just can’t with men that patronize their women and think that they belong in the kitchen. I mean Naomi was really smart!! She was one of the best at her job so if you ask me she would have been better off without Raye. Unfortunately Naomi obviously didn’t see it that way. >_<

Anyway! Ryuk is still one of my faves in here and I just love him! <3 He can have all the apples from me. XD Also I think that one scene where Naomi and Light spoke will have repercussions and I can’t wait to see it all played out. ;-)

I honestly can’t wait to pick up Volume 3!!!

___________________________

Why was this so suspenseful?!
I swear Light is on another level in this... as is L. Those two and their cat & mouse game. Even though I'm not sure if it's even cat and mouse... rather cat and cat?! I dunno!
I need to sort my thoughts!

Full and brief review to come soon! =)
___________________________

It's about time I continue with this manga series!
I really want to know what is going to happen next because Vol.1 was super intriguing!
Also it's kinda funny that Light's opponent is named L.
Very mysterious, I wonder who's behind it. Maybe I'll find out?
Guess the only way to know for sure is by reading it.
So let's do this! ;-)

The plot development in this Manga series has far surpassed my expectations. I still find it phenomenal that so much has been packed into so little text! Tsugumi Ohba, you have me in awe!

This is the second volume in the Death Note series and continues following the story of teenager, Light Yagami, who is the current owner of the Death Note - a magical notebook that can be used to kill all those whose names are written within the pages. He also inherits a Shinigami death god as his accomplice until he has either died himself or he has filled the pages of the notebook.

The plot progression in this novel gave this an entirely different feel from the first installment. We were introduced to new characters, the mysterious L from the first volume was revealed to us and we got a more in-depth look into the minds of Light's enemies, who are the police force, which includes his own father.

It is a unique perspective to read about a murderer and yet feel totally aligned to his cause. There are no definite binaries as the 'bad' guys are the police and our 'good' guy is a serial killer. Both are good and both are bad, which highlights the reliability of our protagonist and brings into question the morality of our anti-villain and whether his cause is actually as just as we initially believed it to be.

**This is a spoiler free review (spoilers are hidden); it may contain spoilers for previous instalments in series (scroll down)**

The second instalment in the Death Note manga was fantastic! I am in love with the conflict, specifically how the author shows us both L and Light's perspectives and forces us to consider both viewpoints (makes me super engaged). I am enjoying this much more than I thought I would, and that is a very good thing! I have had a reading slump for around 2 months, but this just might pull me out of it because thanks to this series, I actually want to read again!!

Story : ★★★.75
As already mentioned, I love the dual perspective. I am not quite sure if I am Team-L or Team-Light, quite yet. Morally, I side with L, but can you imagine how interesting it would be if Light started going more and more chaotic? Plot-wise, that would be fascinating in terms of possibilities, and character-wise it would be super engaging. I can't quite give this the full 4 star rating for story, though because I find it odd how fast things are moving for the police force: the fact that they are so intense about some aspects and how they come to some conclusions really fast. I just sense a bit of convenience that I can't shake away. The best part by far, however, was the little segment with Raye's (the FBI agent) fiancee Naomi. She was so smart and then the fact that she was manipulated by Light, built up his character, meanwhile making me attached to Naomi!

Writing : ★★★.75
The writing also improved a lot, yet I am not quite sure if to the extent that I would like (but again time and translation is a factor). No longer are the conversations as awkward (and one of the jokes was fantastic: essentially after seeing that Light can sew, Ryuk remarks that he must be popular with the ladies. To this, Light says that he is, but not because of sewing and that it is his looks that count. Then he asks if Ryuk is not popular with the ladies and Ryuk's face is priceless!!). A lot of room for improvement, but I am not complaining at all. This time I got the jokes!

Sidenote - when starting this out, I thought Ryuk would be a totally different character, right now he is one probably my favorite! <3

One of the best and darkest mangas ever written gets more complex

Ryuks is death goding really hard
So why not just create some chaos by dropping the death note into the human world, not really caring about anything, and having a great, entertaining sidekick appeal with a „Whatever“ attitude. Except for apples, vitamins are important for one's health.

The detectives
They seem to be better people than the protagonists, putting the question of how absolute absolute powers corrupts into the limelight again. That´s the most important red line of the work besides the ethical questions and investigative fun.

Lights transformation
As soon as one begins to kill for egoistic and not altruistic reasons anymore, the morality compass switches to evil. In this case, Light should have kept doing normal business by just killing criminals. On the other hand, he wouldn´t be able to crush monsters anymore if he wouldn´t protect himself from the investigators. So what´s the best ethical solution? There isn´t any, because, with an arrested Light, criminals could kill again much more people than he has to exterminate to not get caught. So what´s worth more, the life of one cop or the many lives of civilians?

Funny, deep, and entertaining, what else can one wish for
The sheer complexity of this thing is amazing. It lets the reader stop so often to think about the implications for real justice and life that it´s hard to just read without the feeling of missing some sophisticated auto mind penetration. This is one of the milestones all great future works of the subgenre will be compared with.

Tropes show how literature is conceptualized and created and which mixture of elements makes works and genres unique:

What this series lacks in overall believability it makes up for in plot twists and interesting characters.

The portrayal of women is still odd and not my favorite, but at least there was ACTUALLY a female character this volume.

Still raises some very interesting questions about morality and I'm curious to see where the plot goes.

It’s no wonder Death Note often gets called the greatest psychological thriller of all time. This is only the beginning, yet the rivalry between antihero Light Yagami and the mysterious task force detective L is already unbelievably well-developed. The way their dynamic plays out is brilliant; when one makes a seemingly monumental step towards victory, the other is already right back on their trail. It’s obvious why this series is a classic amongst anime & manga fangs, since it handles thriller tropes in ways I’ve never before seen executed in fiction.

A few years ago, I got about halfway through this anime. I never ended up finishing it, though Raye Penbar and Naomi Misora were—in my opinion—cause for some of the most memorable scenes from this franchise. The subway doors closing just as Raye figures it all out? Chills. And Naomi is briefly such an awesome threat against Light, it’s really sad to see her gone so soon. Either way, this was a fantastic volume. I can’t wait to finally read this series through and discover all that’s so beloved about Death Note!

This just got a whole lot interesting. Also, it is getting so questionable on the part of Light now. And L. I have so many questions. This is so well written and smart.

The chess-like battle of wits between Light Yagami and L is one of the aspects of Death Note that makes it so captivating (who goes by a few names). This psychological conflict can be compared to that between Sherlock Holmes and his adversary Moriarty. Both characters are planning how to outsmart each other 10 steps ahead of time, and even when one of them appears to be in a position of power, the other manages to pull the wool over the reader's eyes.

If you haven’t read the series, you’re probably thinking “why doesn’t Light just use the Death Note to kill L then.” But that’s the beauty of the story, as the Death Note’s rules create restrictions on how Light can act.

ahhhhhh LLLLLLLLLLLLL🤧❤️ *melts*

The man drinks tea.
He thinks society is best without phones.
He wears chill clothes 24/7 such as sweatpants.
He is basically a young Sherlock.

What is not to love? Nothing. I love him.

but THAT is not why I gave this 5 stars though.
L was only 99.9% of the stars😌
The rest of it was this freaking manga and how freaking smart Light is. My brain cannot. It’s amazing.

I'm really starting to get into this series but Light is starting to pee me off this how he just bloody knows everything!! He's 17 for God sake and he knows how to manipulate an intuitive FBI agent into giving her real name?? Please!! And instantly knowing he's being watched in his house due to all the booby traps he puts in place every time he leaves his room; you're telling me none of his family ever goes in his room or has never notice this routine of his? PLEASE!! I'm still enjoying it but kind of wishing Light would get his come uppance because he's turning into a bit of a dick!

Having the power to kill, even if done for "Greater Good" is still turn your soul to Darkness...

And in this part... Light can't get more Dark...
Specially with his encounter with "The Woman";

Naomi Misora, a woman who wanted Justice..to who killed her fiancée..
A woman strong enough to Detect who can be Kira..

Yet she just went to him... in a strange twist of fates..

---------------

This volume is even more dark , since Kira decided to eliminate the FBI agents that investigate the case of Kira..
He made a plan in work... it's brilliant really but yet so dark..

And a Woman, Naomi Misora, way out of this investigation team is aware of the dark plan from the beginning of this volume, yet she didn't know for sure..who is Kira.

She tried to help her fiancée yet he won't listen... much to Kira's luck...
Kira who thinks a God is on his side after all....

--------------
I find this part is even more thrilling in some parts yet kinda sad..
And it's even more dangerous to Light...who already proved to be more twisted than we thought..

"Woman" 4 ☆ -although later you'll appreciate the woman here.
"Slots" 4☆ -smart yet dark
"Confluence" 4☆
"One" 5☆
"God" 5☆ -breathtaking one
"Countdown" 5☆ -even more breathtaking....and sad.
"Temptation" 4☆
"Phone Call" 4☆
"Handstand" 5☆

And watching the Anime a year later -in order to start reading the second half of the series 7 to 12)... I can't shrug the feeling how sad it is the story of Naomi Misora...
The anime captured her shock brilliantly. . And the sad ending a bit made me lost hope...

Yet I still believe she may have another role..may be..
