Thread of Death is a great shot story setting up for the change in Ashland and what is coming for Gin. We get three different POV's in this one. I loved the three different POV's. We get action, some hints, and letting go of one era and moving into the next.

Don't read this unless you have read up to book 5 or past, because this short gives away a lot of what happened in the previous novels and sets use up nicely for whatever is coming next.

Love that this was actually told from three POVs, Gin's. Phillips, and Jonah's. Definitely makes me curious for book six now and all the chaos that is happening with the underworld now.

An enjoyable short read about Gin attending Mab's funeral to pay her last respects. Of course, in usual Gin style, it turns out to be anything but the respectful, solemn event that it should be.

Great story about some interesting things happening at Mab's funeral. We knew Jonah would stir things up and while I knew Phillip would become more involved one day...I was shocked to hear some intriguing tidbits from his past. It was really great having all the different POVs. Can't wait to find out more!

This was a surprise, 3 points of view in one book... I am really looking forward to see how this plays out...

It's Gin'a arch enemy's funeral and she is going to pay her respects... sounds strange, but she feels like Mab has been a part of her life for the past 17 years, in hindsight, she has!

'Smarmy' comes to mind when I think of who arranged the little shindig at the funeral, and also mega curiosity is building around Kincaid...

Bring on the next round!!!

Thread of Death was a quick read that follows Gin as she attends the funeral of Mab Monroe.

Gin Blanco, the assassin known as the Spider, finally killed her nemesis. When it's time for Mab's funeral, Gin attends to say goodbye to the woman who made her life hell since she was thirteen-years old. Once she arrives, Gin discovers that Mab's funeral is attended by the who's who of the Ashland underworld. When a sniper starts shooting, Gin has to think fast or she'll end up in a grave right next to Mab.

After Mab's death in Spider's Revenge, I knew that a power vacuum would open up with the other crime bosses scrambling to pick up the pieces of Mab's empire. We see a lot of speculation on Gin's part of who she think will fill the void as well as others speculating if this was a power grab by Gin. The funeral was a great way for the author to get all of these power players in the same spot and I really enjoyed how that was done. The entirety of this novella takes place at the funeral, so it's very fast paced and there's a lot of action despite how short the story is. I liked how Gin handled the attack but I am curious if her showing off what she can do will put an even bigger target on her back. Everyone already has it out for Gin and with her abilities, she's even more of a threat. Overall I was happy with the direction this novella went.

This novella is full of the side characters I've come to love over the course of the series. Most of Gin's allies attend Mab's funeral with her and it was great seeing the whole group get together. There was an interesting scene between Owen and Phillip Kincaid, one of Ashland's crime bosses. I'm very curious to see what comes of their connection and what secrets will come to light. Gin and Bria's relationship is a bit rocky after Bria's kidnapping in Spider's Revenge and I'm looking forward to seeing how that gets resolved going forward.

Overall Thread of Death was a great read to connect the events of Spider's Revenge to the next book, By a Thread. I definitely recommend this novella for anyone reading the series.

This was an interesting novella. It sets up the next few books nicely. You’d think Gin could catch a break and say good-bye to Mab in peace, but…nah. Where would the fun be in that. Thread of Death featured three points of view. Gin, Jonah and Philip. So cool to see the Crime Boss and the Lawyer’s thoughts.Of course, Gin reveals herself to Ashland as the spider. It’s one thing for the rumors to make the circuit. Quite another to confirm them.

Time will show how that nugget of information changes the direction of the series.

I’m hoping that Owen’s skeletons don’t hinder or hurt Gin in anyway. For real. I love Owen and I don’t want to see him portrayed in a bad way. I am intrigued to know his secrets and his previous relationship with the shady underbelly of Ashland, but I don’t want to see Gin hurt by it.

Sigh.

Can’t wait to read the next, By a Thread coming out February 28th from Pocket Books.

(I really, really, really (enough really’s?) hope the repetition stops with the next few books. The editors at Pocket Books need to do a better job, or I will stop buying the Elemental Assassin books.

.

Deshalb gibt es "nur" 3,5 Sterne von mir.

Short and sweet Elemental Assassin story

This short story takes us through the aftermath and arc conclusion of Jennifer Estep’s 5th book, Spider’s Revenge. On the outside, Gin looks as healthy as ever, but she’s still healing internally from her huge showdown with Mab. Gin wants to drop by the old girl’s funeral to say her goodbyes (as weird as that may seem), but with her secret out she’s got an even bigger target on her back with all of Ashland’s underworld wanting a piece.

The this short was pretty good and fairly lengthy. It’s definitely not worth reading if you didn’t read the 4th book, even though Estep is the queen of summarizing and rehashing. Even the short story was no exception, but at least there was plenty of good stuff. It gets to the meat of why I like the read these books which is for the action. It’s not imperative that you read this installment if you’re just looking to catch up with everything, but it doesn’t disappoint.

Another terrific, exciting short in this kick-ass series! Everyone's back to attend Mab's funeral when violence erupts and once again Gin is the target. Have no fear, because for my favorite heroine it's like a walk in the park, or in this case the cemetery, when she delivers her own special brand of vengeance and there is no escaping her...looks like Mab's got some friends joining her...HA! You don't mess around with Jim Gin!!

My blood is pumping and I'm ready to read By a Thread!

My Rating: 3.5 stars: Liked it a lot - recommend (B+)

I have been hearing great things about Ms. Estep’s Elemental Assassin series for a while now. I’ve wanted to read it, but by the time I got around to it, the series was already four books in, and I just didn’t have the time to commit to reading four to five books. (Lame excuse, I know!). Anyhow, I’d been chatting with the wonderful Ms. Estep and asked her when would be a good time to “jump in” to her series. She suggested this novella, and I’m so thankful she did!

For those unfamiliar with this urban fantasy series, it centers around Gin Blanco, an assassin whose parents were killed by nemesis assassin, Mab Monroe. The first five books centered on Gin (aka the Spider) trying to take out her long-time adversary, culminating with a massive elemental battle between the two in Spider’s Revenge, where Gin finally defeats Mab. (Note: I did NOT read the first five books.)

Thread of Death is a nice little story - a “day in the life” of Gin - that bridges the story arc ending in the past book with Mab’s death, and a new one starting in the upcoming By a Thread (February 28, 2012, Pocket Books). In this novella, we find Gin recovering from her battle with Fire Elemental, Mab. Gin is also an Elemental, able to manipulate Stone and Ice to her advantage (there are also Air Elementals). I’m still learning about Elementals, but I got a feel for what they can do in this story.

The story takes place over the course of one day - the day of Mab’s funeral. It is also Gin’s first day out and about. Surrounding Gin is a close-knit group of friends and family, including her sister, Bria and her lover Owen. These friends are among the few that know Gin is actually the Spider. As Gin psyches herself up for leaving her home, the reader is given details about each of Gin’s friends. Ms. Estep provides in a sense, a tutorial of who’s who in Gin’s life. I quickly got a feel for who was important to Gin and why. I also learned where there were problems in this small group.

At the funeral, Ms. Estep gives the reader more insight into the major players (i.e. crime bosses and thugs) in town, and I have a feeling she was setting the stage for what is to come. Gin is being strategically hunted by Mab’s long-time associate, Jonah McAllister, and he begins with his plans at the funeral.

One thing I liked about this story was how it was told through the first person point-of-view of more that one person. The majority of the story is relayed via Gin, but we also get into the head of Jonah McAllister and Phillip Kincaid, a man I believe who will play a big part in what is to come. It is an effective way to give the reader a big picture view of the world.

As someone who is new to the series, I felt like Thread of Death was one of those mid-season recap TV shows - you know the ones where they toss in a bunch of old clips to try and bring the viewer up to speed and prepare for what is to come. And as such, Ms. Estep is extremely successful. I feel like I can tackle the upcoming story with little question about back story. I may be missing out on some emotional investment, but I feel after reading this story, I can move forward.

Well, I can tell you this about Thread of Death, the little novella written by Jennifer Estep that takes place right after the event of Spider’s Revenge, the fifth book in her Elemental Assassin series. There is a lot of action packed into this short little story.

Gin is one amazing character. One of my favorite things about Gin is how she is not afraid of letting her softer, more vulnerable side be seen. Okay, that’s not exactly true. She would never show that side to an enemy. But when it comes to those she truly trusts she puts it all out on the table. It’s really cool to see all sides to Gin and makes her even more likeable. In Thread of Death, she is still recovering from her massive showdown with a certain someone who has made her life what it is now. But, of course, even a burial is a mess in Ashland and that is where all the action takes place. I thought it was great how Gin came to terms with everything that has happened and came to see that her life is the way it is because it was supposed to be that way. I always like Gin.

Usually, the Elemental Assassin series is told from Gin’s perspective. But Jennifer switched it up this time around. Each chapter is told by someone different. You get the perspective from three different players and I found that was really cool. I especially liked the chapter as told by Phillip Kincaid. Lots of ‘whoa’ moments in that one. His chapter really sets up the next next book (or book 7 if you will).

You don’t only get tons of action in this little book, you get tons of questions too! Gin’s relationship with her sister is brought up and we’re not sure what’s up with that, there is a woman in black who we’ve maybe or maybe not seen before, there is mention of a new enemy that maybe Gin could help get rid of, and there is also a hint at Owen’s past and it’s not painted in the most favourable light! So many questions! Makes me truly happy that there are at least a few more books coming to this series.

Thread of Death was a great little addition to Spider’s Revenge – like an epilogue if you will. It just polished off the story arc that ended in that book, bringing a little more closure to us the reader and to Gin too.

Gin is still recovering from her fight with Mab with the help of her friends and family. There are rumours flying around that Gin is the Spider but that in no way stops Gin from attending Mab's funeral and getting the closure she needs. All of Ashlands underground players are in attendance not to say their goodbyes to Mab but to size each other up, to see if there is any truth in the rumours that Gin is the Spider and most importantly fight for Mab's position as Ashlands number 1 crime boss.
Jonah McAllister wants revenge, he uses Mab's funeral as the perfect opportunity to out Gin's assassin identity by hiring a hitman to take her out at the funeral. Gin has no choice but to defend herself at the funeral in front of all Ashlands criminal underworld.
All of Gin's fights are so predictable..she always palms one of her five silverstones knives, gets hit a few times, the other person makes a sloppy mistake, Gin then slices & dices, if that doesn't work she uses some variation of her stone/ice powers to take them down. It would be good if in Gin's fights would go down differently.
Owen is great and I'm intrigued by his and Kincaid's past, I got the impression there's a woman involved and that she somehow got between them..hopefully Owen doesn't betray or let down Gin in the future because of some past woman/possible ex-girlfriend.
One person who I don't like is Bria..she's so self righteous and cold and judgemental towards Gin..she's ok with having Finn as a boyfriend when he's practically an assassin and works with Gin in all her assassin related jobs but when it comes to Gin being an assassin she has a problem with her taking the law into her own hands..she's a detective so I'd expect her to have issues with what Gin does but Finn has killed loads of people and done a lot of other illegal things but she doesn't have a problem with him and doesn't treat him like crap like she does Gin. Gin is far too hard on herself when it comes to Bria..bloody hell she's a grown woman but Gin acts like she just an innocent child that needs to be wrapping up in cotton wool.
There was a mystery woman at the funeral who I think is connected to Mab or Gin in some way..so I'm looking forward to finding out who she is and what trouble she'll cause Gin.

Weeks after the big showdown that ended with the death of crime lord Mab Monroe, Gin Blanco is finally healed and on her way to Mab's funeral to say goodbye to her enemy. The who's who of Ashland's underworld is in attendance and rumors that Gin is the assassin known as the Spider are swirling around. When someone opens fire on the crowd, Gin races to stop him before she becomes Ashland's next causality.

Thread of Death takes place after Spider's Revenge. In it, Gin comes to terms with her battle against Mab finally being over and attends her funeral to get the closure she needs when out of no where, someone starts shooting. We get to not only see familiar characters Jonah McAllister and Phillip Kincaid but part of the story is told through their POV. I liked this because it added something extra that made this novella more substantial. It was great to see Gin, Owen, Finn and the rest of the gang again and it ends leaving you with a couple of questions. Definitely has me more excited for By A Thread's release in February. I think it should be read as part of the series and not as a stand alone novella.

Gin is recovering from her huge showdown in which she finally killed Mab Monroe. She decides that she needs to go to Mab's funeral to say her final goodbye's. As we all know nothing is ever simple in Gin's life so of course the funeral doesn't go as it should and she finds herself revealing more about herself to her enemies then she planned.

Even though this is a novella it is still full of all the action and suspense that I have always loved in Jennifer's books. There are a few different POV switches. We get inside both Jonah McAllister and Phillip Kincaid heads. Jonah definitely needs to be taken care of in the very immediate future. I'm kinda shocked that he is still alive at this point. We get a little insight into Philip and a past with Owen that we didn't know existed. Even though this should be read before BY A THREAD I think THREAD OF DEATH gives some great hints to what will happen in book 7 WIDOW'S WEB.

I rather enjoyed this novella. I liked seeing the events that occurred after Mab's death. Really loved the multiple points of view as well. I wonder if this storyline will pick up in book 7 since in book 6, Gin and crew will be out of town. I don't know if I want to believe that Jonah Mcallister was behind those two attacks, though it would make sense if the plan really was to expose her to everyone. This novella has me wanting to know more about Phillip Kincaid and Owen's past relationship with him. I wonder if that's going to come back to bite Owen in the ass and cause problems in Gin's relationship with him. I so want to know what went down between them. Plus, there's Kincaid's enemy and whoever the mystery chick at the funeral was. So much to learn. Mab may be dead, but Gin still has a lot of trouble ahead of her. Can't wait for her to kick more ass and take names. I wonder how she'll handle running into Donovan Caine again...

I strongly believe that the Elemental Assassin series should have ended at 5 novels after the death of Mab Monroe. I still decided to check out this novella where Gin decided to pay her last "respects" to her archenemy purely due to my curiosity about how J Estep decides to infuse life in a series which is now missing one main character.

This novella did nothing to dispel my notion that the series should have ended with the last book. Nonetheless, I would be wrong in stating that reading it was not a pleasure. It is written from multiple PoVs (Gin, Jonah McAllister, Kincaid) which by itself is interesting. The trademark action sequences that are found in the Assassin series are also found here. Little predictable but still entertaining.

Not sure whether I will follow up with the next book, but my curiosity is still not satiated so would probably try it out.

A barely healed Gin attends Mab's funeral to say her peace. It won't be easy. There's a
power vacuum in Ashland. There's also an old bitter enemy remaining. Crime lords and townspeople eye Gin warily and speculate. Then all hell breaks lose. Mab may be dead but Gin still has to fight to survive.

This novella teases us with tiny revelations. The hint of an enemy coming to town is disclosed. (This may occur in Widow' Web as we learn Owen's backstory.) There' also the added treat of three characters' points of view. This was an entertaing, action-acked short story that proves Elemental Assassin series has more exciting stories to be written.

This little nugget or novella closes out the Mab Monroe arc storyline and sets up a lot of questions for the reader as to what will happen next. I really enjoyed that Estep used different POVs and we were able to get into the head of a few characters as opposed to just Gin. I want to know who the mystery woman was at the graveside. I have a feeling I'm not going to like her.
