The Puck Secret

Rate this book
Hockey is my life. It’s my only goal, my only escape, and everything was going according to plan. All I had to do was focus on the game, keep my head down, then get drafted into the NHL.

Starting the year as the Captain of FU should have made that easy, but now my attention is torn between the ice and taunting my rival's little sister, Madeline Peters.

My only real solace is the mystery girl inside my phone who refuses to tell me her name.

Then one drunken knock on the wrong door brings Madeline into my bedroom. It doesn’t matter that I hate her, that I’ve been warned to stay away from her, now that I know what she tastes like, the Mayor’s daughter is just too hard to resist.

I know I can’t afford any distractions, especially not with her brother’s warnings in my ear, but I’ve never been good at following the rules and denying what I want, and what I want is her.

But what do I do when it turns out the same girl I can’t let go of is also the temptress who’s been sending me all of her secrets?

You know how like sometimes the dialogue in movies sounds not human? That was this book.

Maybe I don’t know how talking during sex works but this felt like wayyyyy too much was being said than done.
During one smut scene the Nova (the guy) repeated the same sentence 3 times. OUT LOUD???
I don’t know but I felt like what they were saying made no sense at all like no human would word it like that.

That made the book very repetitive and a lot of sentences were repeated multiple times since not only he said it, but she then repeated whatever he said AND THEN HE SAID IT AGAIN. Oh and of course they describe it as well.

Repetition can be a nice stylistic device but not like that.

ALSO: he just calls her a slut so often LIKE FUCK OFF

One example:
“Just wondering why you’re dressed like such a slut, Princess, you almost look like one of the bunnies.”

April 8, 2024 Update
Audible. 2nd time listening, I'm not sure why I didn't update this for the first listen. How fucking perfect, is it to have Nova fucking Darkmore in your ear as you do chores around the house or errands outside?!!! It's fucking phenomenal, that's what! I'd have preferred other narrators, but these do the job. This book is so goddamn good and a great reread or listen cuz I always find new tidbits that I missed from being so fucking horny. Once again, I'm obsessed with the side characters and can't fucking wait for Josh's story. This fucking grump needs to get laid and I'm fucking HERE for it!

June 12, 2023 Original
All these fucking hockey stories are making me want to start watching the sport. But then I see some toothless fucker on TV and I ain't about the How to Train a Dragon shit, nope, I'll just stick to reading about it.

But then I read this one and I'm now considering dentures cuz holy shit is this team hot! You got this sexy as fuck captain and his friends, who all sound hotter than a tight cunt. You got the main dude, Nova, who I imagine him to be this huge fucker with a magic dick, cuz fucking woah, he was sexy with a little soft heart. You got him fighting, fucking, flirting, the 3 f's that had my cunt ready to go. He had that broody, tough guy shit going on, while still giving you the feels.

Maddie, who I'm not gonna lie, I kept forgetting her name was ballsy and restrained all at once. She's the perfect daughter that has a hoe side. But it's just for him. I'm not saying she's a goddamn cum bucket, just that she's polite unless Nova is around, then Maddie turns into a goddamn vixen. I love it cuz it shows that she's comfortable and confident around him as opposed to the little dutiful princess that she has to portray to the world.

I enjoyed the back and forth and the sex scenes, holy fucking shit, were they hot! I can't decide on my favorite, there were so many good ones. I'm just glad, Nova didn't need any batteries to perform. Nothing fucks up the vibe like a dildo that still uses batteries, newer models for the win! OH and I'm obsessed with the side characters and can't wait for their stories. I got my eye on a brooding hockey player that was there and I mean, there like, he was present in maybe one fucking scene. I can't even remember if the fucker had a line. All I know is, if he was a fucking potato, I'd still fuck him.

She might not even know my name yet, but I know one day I’ll be making her scream it.

I didn't know this when I started this book, but I am fully now in my Hockey romance era. And this book? OMG! Where has this been all my life and how is this my first GN Wright book? Y'all, obsessed doesn't even begin to cover it.
Are you going to beg, Princess?” I tease, licking her taste from my lips as I try to restrain myself from going back for more.
“God, I fucking hate you,” she pants, her chest rising and falling in rapid movements as she tries to catch her breath.
“That’s okay,” I say with a smile. “You can still hate me and come on my face at the same time.”

There has never been any love lost between Nova Darkmore and Madeline Peters. He may not hate her as much as her father, but it's a close third. The second place taken by her twin brother and his hockey teammate, Josh. There's some convoluted history between these two to say the least. Nova is the boy from the wrong side of the tracks with a golden college hockey career. Madeline is the perfect little obedient daughter of a senator and snob...or so Nova thinks anyway. The tension between these two is almost as palpable as the chemistry.

A drunken night and a wrong phone number later, begins a text exchange with neither of the them knowing who the other is. And OMG this was delicious. But certainly not as delicious as the hate between them brewing into such heated lust that they can't deny it anymore.

Madeline is put between a rock and a hard place when her father tells her she has to get engaged to a slime back of a guy or he'll pull his financial support. The last thing she wants is to marry the sleaze ball but she feels like she has little choice if she wants to graduate and stand on her own two feet. Her attraction to her brother's rival is quite inconvenient. Especially when another drunken mishap lands her on his door looking to even the odds with her philandering "fiancé". Thus begins their push and pull, we can't but we can't stop relationship and oh my god was I here for it. Nova is what my book boyfriend dreams are made out of. A little tortured with a sprinkle of dirty talk and all of the possessiveness. Madeline was a ball of sass herself even though I wanted to judge her for caving so easily to her father...who I hated so hard. But I digress.

This was the beginning of what's bound to be one amazing new series and I cannot wait for more. I devoured this in one sitting and if you're on the fence with this book, trust me and just read it. You'll be kicking yourself for not doing it sooner.

This book was definitely worse than my expectations. The characters relationship was based on sex, they didn't even know each other properly. There were so many moments this book was cringe. The plot was good, but how the author portrayed it ruined everything. There was no romance in that book.

NOT RECOMMENDED

This was a mess.
I hated it
The characters were all just WRONG!
So many GAGS!
It was disgusting to say the least.
The way this two treat each other was terrible
Love? This two wouldnt now what love is in a million years. Nope. This was just two freaking "new adults" feeling lust for each other. Thats it. Thats the freaking book! Ohhh and a lot of disgusting sex scenes that add ZERO to the story or character development, and yet the author wants to convince you that because of the "hot" sex the felt for each other. BS!!! The texts ohh boy did i had high hopes for those texts! But no, again they became NOTHING! Secrets? What secrets??? The only damn secret was who they were!! And don't even get me started with the whole fiance bs going on!!!! Omg im so mad! What a waist of my time.

4.5 stars! The Puck Secret is the first book in the Fairfield U Series and this was so much fun! A bit of an enemies with benefits between the hero and the heroine, who is his teammate and rival’s sister. We also get a secret identity trope with them being text buddies without knowing it too. I had a good time with this read!

Maddie and Nova hate one another on paper. Her mayor dad had an affair with his mom and then left her to go back to his “picture perfect” family. Nova also plays hockey with her brother, they’re teammates but hate one another too. But at the beginning of the story she accidentally texts the wrong number and they start up a friendship (Grim and The Lonely Charm), not realizing who one another actually is. At the same time, they start having some lusty feelings towards one another in person and hatefully hooking up.

“This hatred had been building for years, sizzling between us like an inferno ready to explode, and now we've both stepped into the fire we have no choice but to perish.”

Maddie has a lot going on with her father and family life, he’s trying to arrange a marriage for her just to help his own career out. She finds exactly what she needs at the right time with Nova, and he falls hard for her too, through all the hate and hurt her family has caused his mom. I liked how much they push one another, but in all the right ways!

“I want her. I know that I shouldn’t, that my temptation for her is a mistake, but I don’t care. I’m not done with Madeline Peters, she just doesn’t know it yet.”

I was just obsessed with their dynamic and I love how through the hate, he does fall first and is the one more read to acknowledge his feelings before her. The steam in here was so good, we even get a little moment including someone else with them. 👀 I liked the intro to the rest of the hockey players and I’m excited for the next book’s setup (her brother and her best friend).

Okay when I first heard about this one, I was wondering how it was going to go and how this would work. I am happy to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The tension, banter and spice with the MCs was top tier.

Maddie is the Mayor’s daughter and has to comply in an engagement deal in order to keep her dad paying for her college tuition. Maddie deeply dislikes the guy, Brad, because he is a cheating a-hole. Maddie is furious about this arrangement and wants to rant to her friend and tries to send her a text in her new phone but ends up texting the wrong number.

She begins to frequently text this anonymous person, who she begins to fall for and feel connected to because they have similar issues. This anonymous person ends up being Nova, who is her arch nemesis, her brother’s rival, and his hockey teammate. Nova hates Maddie, her family, and her brother for what they’ve done to him and his mother.

I absolutely loved every time Maddie and Nova would interact in person and through secret text messages. I just loved how Maddie didn’t take any of the Nova’s crap.

I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, as I loved the side characters as much as the main. Thank you for sending an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Tropes:
- Hockey romance
- Enemies to lovers
- Opposites attract
- Anonymous texts
- Brother’s rival & teammate

Spice: 3

Two deeply unlikable characters got together, but I couldn't give a damn about it ☠️

The hero is a manwhore, who despite sleeping with HUNDREDS OF GIRLS considered them all "puck bunnies, whores, selfish bitches" etc. and treated them as if they were not human at all. The scenes were he made his previous sexual partner Brianna feel like shit just to get away from her or to make the heroine feel better, made me so angry 😡🤬🆘

And the heroine is not better in that regard, calling them sluts and feeling superior to them... But the thing that made me despise the heroine is her arranged marriage storyline, specifically her reactions to that. She spent the whole book crying, being miserable and making people around her miserable because her father was forcing her to marry the son of his business partner. She didn't want to do it, the guy in question was a cheating bastard AND violent towards the heroine, yet she still planned to marry him? Because daddy would've cut her off financially and she would have to "get a job"? And finance her college tuition herself? And that was so horrible for her that she chose to marry a scumbag and be miserable her whole life instead? 😱🤷🏼‍♀️ I suppose to sympathise with her after THIS????

***AVAILABLE NOW***

4.5 STARS

I ate this book up. When I saw it was teammate/rival, enemies to lovers, anonymous text, and then a steamy scene from the author’s TikTok…sold.

What I loved:
1. I really loved the hero. He had this whole broody, I hate the world vibe but then was soft as he fell in love with the heroine. Seeing moments with his mom made him so much more lovable, and the mouth on him. Also, possessive when he realizes he loves her. Like done.
2. I did enjoy the heroine as well, especially when she was with the hero. She is her real self with him, such a spitfire.
3. The steam was so good (degradation at times, which I know isn’t everyone’s thing) but it fit them as a couple and their dynamic.
4. I liked the overall background for them as a couple and why they were enemies. It was a legit reason.
5. The secondary cast was phenomenal, like if I don’t get books for Archer, Alexander and even Daemon, I’ll riot.
6. I enjoyed the writing as GN Wright is a new to me author.
7. I couldn’t put it down. Any spare minute, I was reading.

What I needed more of:
1. I wish the heroine had kept her backbone with her dad. She was so strong when battling Nova but just accepted her arranged marriage. I get this is needed for the plot line, but I wanted her strength to carry through. She is ultimately saved by men. I wish she would have saved herself.
2. The sharing scene was hot (not full on sharing), but not sure it was necessary. The only saving grace for me was that she wanted it as much as he did and his reaction after, when he comes to a certain realization.
3. There were some parts of the plot that seemed unrealistic - she sees tattoos in an anonymous text thread but they are never brought up (and yes, she doesn’t see them but it seemed important and then just didn’t really come to anything), the mom’s cancer is kind of picked up and dropped for plot movement…things like that. I wish those would have been fleshed out a bit more.

Did I still consume this one? I sure did. I couldn’t put it down. It was entertaining, steamy, fun, and I’m definitely going to need more for the secondary characters. I LOVED THEM!

Hard to rate. Hated it and thoroughly enjoyed being riveted. If the books ‘The Deal’ and ‘Magnolia Parks’ had a baby this might be it. The title could have been vicious people. I found the stereotypes and repetitions quiet eye rollie and banal—as I did with the deal. The plot was a bit weak she could have just taken out a loan/got a job. That said it was a page turner, an impending crash that was hard to look away from, and really I couldn’t look away right till the very end!

It’s pretty good. I mean i hated most of the characters, the miscommunication was frustrating (not in a spicy way disappointingly)(don’t judge im ovulating), i also feel like ive read at least two books with EXACTLY the same plot, buuuut its was entertaining nonetheless.

The 🌶️ was 2.5/5 ish

Very random but this book has set to stone that i hate any form of degradation (verbal or other) in books or any media.
It either praise o nada. Lol

(P.s. im not kink shaming just personally dislike it)

This was AMAZING and I'm SO OBSESSED. The hero hates the heroine because of her family. He's also her brother's teammate on the hockey team at school. They accidentally start texting and don't know they're talking to each other and start falling. Then, they start hooking up in real life as more of an angry hookup that they can't stop. They are both also dealing with so much personally and also don't know what to do about their feelings. And the hero falls SO HARRRRD and I was so obsessed. A new favorite of the year!!!

Josh y Hallie.

DNFing at 71% 🫠

typical bad boy/good girl trope, with extra angst because fmc’s dad has an affair with mmc’s mom so the mmc hates the whole family. which i find so odd because the mmc’s mom worked for the fmc’s dad so she knew he was married but the mmc (nova) condemns the whole Peters family and doesn’t look at his mom any differently. ok then.

their relationship is all about sex. there is absolutely no romance in the slightest. this book is so misogynistic, cringey, and simply set in its gendered stereotypes. all the girls are sluts/puck bunnies & the guys are all perfectly fine to fool around with them multiple times while maintaining this god tier status of never doing anything wrong, yadda yadda yadda.

the premise of the book seemed exciting - anonymous texting with secrets being shared? love that. buuuut then it just falls off. the college kids don’t sound like college kids, sex scenes are weird, and there feels like there’s several holes in the plot.

also this is a personal pet peeve of mine, but all the exclamation points are just so…unnecessary lol. personally didn’t care for this book & kept reading in hopes it would be worth it but after 71% of on and off reading, i’m throwing in the towel and moving on.

"𝐈’𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐞, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐦𝐲 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞’𝐬.”

Hi. Ok. You're going to want to pay attention to this one. I went into this apprehensive, not going to lie. The trope list is TO DIE FOR but it's hard to know if all hype was warranted. Well I'm here to tell you it ABSOLUTELY was. Now there is ALOT going on in this book... you've got rival families, brother's teammate, anonymous wrong number texting, sick/asshole parents, oh and throw in an arranged marriage to a major douchecanoe too 😱 .... so get ready for a wild ride.... and did I mention THE SPICEEEEE 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 Nova is filthyyyyy with a mouth to match and Maddie isn't as innocent as she seems, however they kind of hate each other.... for a while... so the sparks flyyyyy 😏

“𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞.”

Both characters were 👨‍🍳💋. Maddie is the "good girl" Mayor's daughter who finally realizes she isn't happy with the fake life she's portraying. Nova is the hockey Captain destined for the NHL with a bit of a bad boy vibe. Deep down though he's got some big feelings and a VERY possessive heart of gold. I also really loved all the friends/teammates (who are the stars of future books!) You get plenty of hockey time too including several fights 😈 They definitely fight their feelings, trying to hold on to their hatred, but ultimately they have an incredible bond and understand each other like no one else.

“𝐅𝐮𝐜𝐤, 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮.”

^^ "Princess" *bites knuckles* ughhhhhh my fav!! And when it's condescending Princess turned affectionate Princess... im ☠️☠️. Also the praise/degradation combo was LETHAL.... oh and he may or may not share her with one of his teammates.... just a little 😏

If you're looking for a new hockey romance that isn't the same handful you see everywhere look no further! Read this. Thank me later. 😘

Read if you like:
- Rival Teammate's Sister
- Enemies to Lovers
- Bad Boy/Good Girl
- Wrong Number texts
- Epic banter
- He calls her "Princess"
- Hate fueled chemistry 🔥
- He's possessive AF and falls first
- Hot AF 🌶 with praise/degradation

Hear me out. I can’t believe I’m going to actually say this, but although this book is good, there’s … wait for it …

*Takes A Deep Breath*

There was Too. Much. Sex.

I know. Don’t @ a girl. It is what it is.
Don’t get me wrong I think Nova Darkmore is pure filth. In the best way possible. The guy has so much Big D*ck Energy you won’t know where to look. But there is such a thing as too much and this book has it. I also, on a personal note, hate when the See You Next Tuesday word is overused in a book, and it felt like I was reading it on every other page.

The book starts off great. There’s a whole load of sexy flirty texting banter. And I salivate for that shit. When the author brings the bants encased in a little bubble I squeal like an overexcited toddler. And this book has them in spades and they’re exquisite.

There’s a cute little group of friends who are obviously going to get their own stories, but they’re heavily hinted at and I’m not sure if I liked that. It left little anticipation for me to be spurred on to read the next one.

Then there’s the basement scene. And full disclosure, I hated it. Even though Nova realises after that it shouldn’t have happened. It was unnecessary and un-needed. I hate when a character veers from their character that it makes believability hard.

Madeline was standard. There were hints at her suffering with anxiety at the beginning of the book but it’s never fully explored or explained. She’s got a fairly stable backbone, she just doesn’t use it enough.

I liked the way her brother was the book hero, saving Madeline from her ultimate fate, but it left nothing for Nova to deal with so he could have his defining moment.

All in all it’s a decent, sexy read. But there’s too much going on for it to get to any depth. There’s too many plot points for it to be satisfyingly resolved.

i had to dnf this bcz what the actual fuck.
the amount of slut shaming in this book is CRAZY. and it was released this year?!? and written by a female?!!

also why did all the “men” in this book treat her like property? first, her father auctions her off to marriage, then threatens to cut her off if she doesn’t follow through with the engagement. THEN the so called “love interest” in the book, is constantly saying that she is his “dirty slut” and nobody else’s. this was actually disgusting and made a reading slump look soooooo appealing!!

4.5🌟 I just know this is one of those books that I won’t be able to stop thinking about.

Firstly, the tension between Maddie & Nova was off the charts! I wanted to scream in excitement when they were throwing insults back & forth at each other. The pair had such a good connection & I liked that they got to secretly know each other through text without knowing who the person was.

I loved that there was a sort of forbidden aspect to this too with Nova being Maddie’s older brother’s teammate, sort of “enemy” & their families have a lot of history.

The spice in this was so hot too!!! I loved seeing Maddie go from daddy’s good little girl to a complete slut for Nova.

I couldn’t help but awwwww at Maddie & Nova confessing their feelings for each other. I also loved that Nova was super possessive over Maddie, wanting her to wear his jersey, defending her honour and not letting anyone touch her.

We need to mention the side characters & the found family aspect! It was impossible not to fall in love with them from the get go & I’m hoping so many of them have their own book, especially Archer!

This was my first book by GN Wright and it certainly won’t be my last! Excited to jump straight into the puck decoy.

Overall, I highly recommend!
