When Grandma comes for a visit, silliness and creativity are guaranteed, in this funny and endearing book by bestselling novelist Emma Straub; her kids' gaga, Susan Straub; and award-winning illustrator Jessica Love.
Gaga days are the best! That’s when this eccentric, mischievous grandma babysits her delighted granddaughter. These Gaga days are always full of the silliest “mistakes,” like swapping eyeglasses and walking backwards to the park. Like making the house safe by eating all the marshmallow goblins, filling the tub to bursting with bubbles, and then reading a bedtime story all the way through upside down.
With touches of Amelia Bedelia and Eloise, this irrepressible granny might just inspire deliciously goofy, endlessly creative, and bursting-with-love grandma-grandchild playdates!
Emma Straub is the New York Times‒bestselling author of the novels All Adults Here, Modern Lovers, The Vacationers, Laura Lamont's Life in Pictures, and the short story collection Other People We Married. Straub's work has been published in twenty countries, and she and her husband own Books Are Magic, an independent bookstore in Brooklyn, New York.
So much love and laughter in the gorgeous picture book about the special love between a kid and their grandparent. My nanna was a little eccentric and I adored her. Love Gaga’s silly mistakes-on-purpose.
Read three times in a row at daughter's request. Gorgeous, mesmerizing illustrations and delightful story. Very relatable to marshmallow-obsessed four y.o.
Oh my, what a fabulously fun book! Emma and Susan Straub have written a book epitomizing what grandparents should be. When Gaga comes to take care of her granddaughter, she makes many "mistakes." These silly amusements, such as walking backward to the park or eating marshmallow goblins to save the house, make the day delightful. Jessica Love's illustrations are outstanding. They are colorful and characterize the personalities of Gaga and the granddaughter perfectly. The story and pictures portray the love between the two. I wish this book had been around when my grandchildren were small, but I honestly think they would enjoy it now. I love this book so much! Thank you to Edelweiss and Penguin Random House for the ARC of this book.
I received an ARC of this book for my honest opinion.
Gaga is visiting her grandchild today and it is full of "mistakes" and fun. This is such a lovely book about the wonderful relationship kids can have with their grandparents. I love the cooky, fun illustrations and all the fun silly things Gaga does with her granddaughter. Not only does it highlight the importance of grandparents to help out parents and how to indulge your grandchild, I also love that it is centered around mistakes, and how wonderful things can happen when you embrace mistakes instead of stress or worry about them. A wonderful book to celebrate Mother's Day or Grandparents Day.
An absolutely superb book about a little girl's Saturdays spent with her adoring Gaga, who's antics remind me a lot of myself. Gaga's and Nana's will often do and say anything to bring a laugh and a smile to our grands faces. The art in this book is a joy to behold. But of course! It's by artist Jessica Love!
Such a sweet book about Gagas (grandmas) and the fun they are! This is definitely my Mom and my daughter (but this gaga has a lot more energy!)
Contrary to some books (thinking like How to Babysit a Grandma), Emma Straub as author and Jessica Love as illustrator make this book feel more serious and heartwarming and less silly. Which I appreciate some times.
The story Emma and Susan wrote together was so charming and delightful to see span across the pages. There were many instances of silliness that warmed my heart and made me think fondly of the “Gaga’s” in my own life (especially nap time). And of course, the artwork by Jessica is absolutely stunning. Feels like it’s painted directly on the page. Love love love!
Lovely message of the bonds between Gaga and her granddaughter. They spend Saturdays together and have many adventures that include trying new things or doing known things in a different way. The illustrations capture the joy and love between them as they move from experience to experience.
A gorgeous picture book about a young girl and her Gaga (grandmother) and all the fun they have on their weekly Saturdays together. The illustrations are so full, robust and bursting with color and energy and the story is fantastic fun. A great read aloud and a reminder to never grow up!
Every child should have a grandparent in their lives like this one who is full of fun and participates along with that child in the fun. Grandparents can and do teach joy and creativity to young children. Brightly colored illustrations are done in pencil, watercolor, and gouache.
Grandparents are always just a bit magical. This story celebrates a grandchild and grandparent and the fun they have together doing things that are special for the two of them.
I read this book while we were in Emma’s bookstore. (Which I didn’t know she owned) and I fell in love with it! I enjoyed the story and also the pictures. It reminded me of my mother and daughter.
