Demonbinder: A Slavic fairy tale

Rate this book

A thrilling YA fantasy for fans of Shadow and Bone and The Bear and the Nightingale, based on Slavic myth.

For millennia, a demon has been kept bound by a magic art that is now dying out. Only one gifted girl has the power that could keep the demon from breaking free and destroying her world.

Slovakia, 1905: Sixteen-year-old Katka scrubs floors for the rich and dreams of being free to enjoy her life. But when she discovers she is one of few women who still have the power to keep the evil demon Černabog chained to a mountain, she must shoulder a heavier burden.

Because many women have stopped creating the pysanky that have bound him for millennia, Černabog is about to break free. If he does, he’ll take revenge on his captors, starting with Katka’s family, who have always had a special gift for the magic art. As she quickly hones her talent, she draws the attention of the demon, who unleashes his otherworldly forces on her village, leaving destruction in their wake.

A glimmer of hope arrives when an enigmatic traveler enters Katka's world, offering a daring proposition to defeat the demon. But in a battle with Černabog, nothing is what it seems. As the lines blur between ally and adversary, Katka unearths long-buried secrets that threaten not just her own life but the lives of those she loves most.

I knew nothing of the Slovak myth of Černabog. But it instantly intrigued me within the first couple of chapters. Learning of the art of pysanka is fascinating as well. Such pretty designs on eggs.

Karen writes so well. It was easy to follow and kept my interest on every page. I loved the quotes, "I had to be like a clean window for the light to shine through."
"The real magic is the maker."

I personally know Karen and have been waiting to read her book. I'm so happy it's now in physical form. Highly recommend.
