Son passé la hantera-t-elle à jamais? Lady S se remémore son arrivée inopinée chez les Fitzroy pour leur restituer les bijoux volés il y a quelques années. Pour seul bagage, elle n'avait que ses18 ans et un énorme poids sur la conscience : le suicide d'une femme qu'on avait accusée à tort, qu'on avait accusée à sa place... Tout en conservant élégance, charme, dynamisme, et sans trahir sa fierté, Lady S contredit, de façon toute moderne, les stéréotypes sur l'espionne froide, fatale, et super entraînée !
Et si Shaniouchka, dans ce deuxième opus, vit une nouvelle naissance presque idyllique celle-là sous le nom de Suzan, il semble bien que c'est pour mieux laisser l'enfer s'ouvrir à ses pieds...

"Lady S" has a '80s spy mini series written all over it, probably due to Hamme's writing and Aymond's art that looks too much like Vance's from XIII, another series penned by Hamme. Was it a hommage to a colleague? This edition contains first two issues, but the story drags on which is normal as it's only introduction into how Suzie became Lady S. Lets see where Hamme will lead us next with his version of femme fatale.

I enjoyed the art. It has a crisp feel to it. However, the story is not that exciting. It consists mostly of the main character's backstory. The actual spy mission is a smaller part of the book.

An amazing spy story; gorgeously drawn with exquisite detail. There are twists and turns and jumps in time, but the story never confuses. Most importantly, I love the main character. I'm extremely eager to dive into Volume 2.

Backstory of how she got adopted after fleeing Estonia and being a thief for two years. The rest of the story is rather bland for the series.

dnf. Art is... ok... The story idea is workable, but the actual on-the-page story and plot is badly paced and clunky. The awkward translation is partly to blame... but only partly.

I enjoy movies, TV shows, and comics about female spies and assassins, so I decided to check out the first volume of Lady S when I saw it on Comixology. It’s a Belgian comic book series about a young woman who was orphaned in the U.S.S.R. and became a successful thief before leaving the country when her past caught up with her. When the story begins, she is much older and is known as the adopted daughter of an American ambassador, who relies on her for her multilingual ability. The story opens in France and once again Suzie’s past has caught up with her. This time, she is blackmailed into becoming a spy.
This comic wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. It’s the cover that got me and made me expect much more action than what I received. But despite that, I enjoyed it. It is dialogue-heavy, but it’s all essential to the plot, and you’ll want to pay attention to it all because there are a few twists, which helped to increase my enjoyment of the story especially since it is quite slow-paced for a comic and mostly focuses on politics.
We get a lot of Suzie’s backstory in this volume, which I didn’t expect. I’m not well-versed in comics, but, so far, I usually get the protagonist’s backstory in the second volume; or, if it’s touched on in the first volume, the backstory doesn’t go as in-depth as it did here. But I didn’t mind that. I appreciated it, actually, because it helps to round out Suzie’s character and give more substance to some of the side characters as well.
I’m surprised at how much I liked the story, especially how it wraps up at the end. It makes me want to read the next volume.
ART STYLE
Aymond’s illustration style worked for me. It’s very detailed when it needs to be and complements the story well. I liked the little mole high on Suzie’s cheek as an extra way to identify her in scenes, and I also liked that she’s often presented in warm colors. However, I tended to favor the city street views and spent more time admiring those.
OVERALL: ★★★☆☆
Although it is a dialogue-heavy mystery with not as much action as I expected, it is a good read and a compelling one. I’ll most likely read the next volume.

I'd like to give this book 3.5 stars. It was a really interesting premise with a cool and well thought out lead, however I did feel the story bogged down a bit in the middle, as well as an ending that didn't really seem to do much, however I will be continuing this series as long as I can get the other books :) It's a decent read if you like spy and espionage stories, however expect more slower paced spy shenanigans instead of James Bond/Jason Bourne style.

I very much liked the classic visual style. It's what I grew up with. The story is OK and I would describe it as pretty standard.

Another "graphic novel" /cartoon/comic book of the French variety.
It was 'interesting' but I have others which will come before volume 2. :)
