Foarte bună cartea.
Am dat 4 stele pentru că nu mi-a plăcut mie finalul dar construcția a fost superbă și execuția pe măsură.
Ideea de bază este că amintirile noastre nu sunt neapărat adevărate iar aici aveam perspective diferite ale aceluiași adevăr.
Te bagă în ceață și nu mai știi exact cine minte și cine spune adevărul.

Chirovici a reușit să mă surprindă cu modul în care a disecat psihicul uman și i-a expus slăbiciunile pe masă. Cartea secretelor este un roman complex, mai complex decât mă așteptam, în care putem privi faptele din perspective diferite, fiecare dintre ele relevând alte aspecte a ce s-a întâmplat de fapt. Rezultatele, consecințele și modurile în care au fost afectați cei implicați se schimbă în funcție de unghiul din care este privit evenimentul, dar fapta concretă rămâne mereu aceeași. Un om mort rămâne mort indiferent din ce parte privești și nici cea mai creativă persoană nu poate să schimbe o realitate definitivă ca moartea. December 12, 2018Este o carte fantastica. Daca nu citeam deja "O amintire de la Paris" i-as fi dat nota 10*, dar, in acesta situatie nu pot nota aceasta poveste. Dupa cum spuneam, este o carte rescrisa, ceea ce nu am mai intalnit iar in descriere nu se specifica acest lucru (doua carti, aceeasi poveste - cu ceva modificari, titluri diferite, ani de publicare diferiti). Pacat de acesta situatie.

Ce carte! Mi-a plăcut tot la lectura aceasta.
Personajele sunt misterioase, m-am îndoit mereu de ce aveau de zis, mai ales prin prisma amintirilor lor. Destul de interesant redată relația dintre ele, apariția de noi personaje și conexiunea dintre ele în prezent și trecut.
Firul narativ e complex, iar aici mă refer la incertitudine și confuzie. Nu mai știam la un moment dat ce să cred și cine e cine. Dar totul e fain construit, nu doar ca să încurce.
Faptul că ideea principală e bazată pe amintiri și cât de mult ne putem baza pe ele a fost un plus imens. Mă fascinează acest subiect, și am citit cu plăcere fiecare frază.
"Când vrei să jefuiești cu adevărat pe cineva, nu-i furi viitorul, ci trecutul. Viitorul este prin definiție o incertitudine nebuloasă, o sumă de obiective neclare care adesea nu se împlinesc și dacă o fac - de obicei, fie prea târziu, fie prea devreme - sunt mai degrabă dezamăgitoare, pentru că așteptările noastre sunt întotdeauna prea mari comparativ cu ceea ce realitatea poate oferi.
Trecutul este singura certitudine, singurul refugiu sigur, chiar dacă între timp memoria noastră înşelătoare a turnat întâmplările vieţii noastre, importante sau mai puţin importante, într-un tipar cu totul diferit. Al doilea roman citit de mine din ce a scris Chirovici până acum. Cartea oglinzilor mi s-a părut un roman slab, cu idei bune. Cartea secretelor reia rețeta din acel roman, și de data acesta iese cum trebuie. Menționez că nu am citit O amintire de la Paris, însă trebuie precizat faptul că autorul a rescris/retușat acel roman publicat la noi în 2012 și i-a dat un nou nume, tradus acum la noi de Rao din engleză. Cei care au citit romanul din 2012 trebuie să știe că personajele și intriga sunt cam aceleași, ca să nu dea bani aiurea. Ar fi fost frumos să se precizeze acest lucru la început, și nu undeva la finalul cărții.
Spuneam că romanul e construit pe același tipar ca și precedentul. Avem o poveste spusă de un personaj, poveste investigată de naratorul inițial și personajul central al romanului. Aici e vorba de o călătorie la Paris a unor tineri americani și o experiență brutală despre care cei doi păstrează amintiri diferite. Relatarea acelei vizite la Paris, cu lacunele și informațiile ei eronate, e povestită diferit de cei doi tineri americani, acum unul bătrân, bolnav, iar celălalt printr-un jurnal lăsat celor care ar vrea să afle adevărul. Evident că cele două povești se bat cap în cap și e nevoie de alte perspective pentru a afla povestea exactă.
Romanul se joacă cu aceste perspective, de data aceasta personajele par diferite între ele și, deși Chirovici nu e un mare stilist, povestea e bine strunită până la capăt. Bucuros fiind că nu e o nouă dezamăgire, dau 4 stele și sper să revină cu romane noi, cât mai bune.

Ca și în cazul volumului precedent, „Cartea oglinzilor”, oscilez între 3.5 și 4 stele.
Intrigă solidă, cu toate că nu înțeleg pe deplin motivația personajului principal, James Cobb, de a afla neapărat ce s-a petrecut în urmă cu patruzeci de ani într-o cameră de hotel din Paris. Bine, motivația se ghicește, într-un final, dar parcă e drum lung până acolo.
Ceva mai puțină acțiune și intrigă polițistă decât în volumul principal, autorul mizând mai mult pe latura psihologică (ceea ce e un lucru foarte bun) și pe creionarea unor personaje ceva mai diferite între ele: adică acestea au suflet, vorbesc și se comportă diferit unul față de celălalt, plus vreo două găselnițe care fac casă bună cu un roman solid.
Mi-a plăcut aproape la fel de mult ca primul. Aștept cu mare nerăbdare să văd despre ce va fi vorba în următorul volum.

3.5. A început super promițător, e scrisă ok pentru un thriller, însă pe parcurs s-a întâmplat ceva ce mi se pare că i-a cam știrbit din valoare. Puncte bonus pentru faptul că se citește rapid și are acel ceva care o face greu de lăsat din mână. Punctele minus vin din faptul că am citit eu alte cărți mai bune.

Am asteptat toata lectura sa intru in poveste cu adevarat si sa ma familiarizez cu personajele insa asta s-a intamplat doar partial. Cu siguranta mi-au scapat multe din aceasta carte si din acest motiv tind sa cred ca n-am inteles-o pe deplin.
“Oamenii spun ca timpul vindeca. Gresesc. Atunci cand traiesti ceva cu adevarat cumplit, timpul incepe sa curga, pur si simplu, in doua albii diferite, ca apele unui rau care se desparte-n doua. Intr-o parte a lui, iti continui viata obisnuita, cel putin in aparenta. Dar cealalta parte se reduce treptat doar la acel moment, pe care-l traiesti mereu, iarasi si iarasi, cu aceeasi intensitate, un vartej din care nu vei mai iesi niciodata.”

As a Psychologist, I was immediately drawn in by the summary of the book, on the back page). Actuallyblurbblerb is wrong as the main character isn't a Psychologist, but psychiatrist (I believe the character corrects someone in the book and that caught my attention). Anyway, that's irrelevant... he's a mental health practitioner that uses hypnosis. This wasn't really the focus of the plot though. I had hoped it would be featured more.
The plot centers really on how the main character James Cobb investigates an event described to him by a client during hypnosis. I mean this is a breach of ethics and there are many of those in the book (without giving away a spoiler) which I did kind of roll my eyes, as somethings wouldn't (hopefully) happen in real life. I had to make a concerted effort to not read this book as a practitioner but to simply enjoy the 'fiction'. And I did.
Was it the best thriller/crime novel in the world...No! But it was pure entertainment and I really enjoyed EO Chirovici's blunt, to the point and at times slightly disconcerting writing style. It works and I thought it wouldn't work too but blunt. But in a world of over the top descriptive imagery, this style is refreshing.
A solid 3 and a half stars and truly would be 4 stars if I had liked the protagonist more and I would have if you had been more ethical but that's really because I'm a clinician!

A dying man approaches a psychiatrist to ask for help recovering some memories from about 40 years ago. Joshua is concerned he murdered someone but has blocked the truth from his mind. James is intrigued and continues looking into the matter after the death of Joshua. This was a decent murder mystery about the problems with human memories and how imperfect they are.

Conturarea psihologica a personajelor mi-a placut, dar s-a repetat de prea multe ori ideea ca amintirile nu sunt sigure - lucrul asta a diminuat cumva misterul pentru mine.

I enjoyed this author's previous book, The Book Of Mirrors, and also enjoyed this one - if anything, I thought it was better. As in The Book Of Mirrors, the story is told via stories from several different characters, giving you diverging versions of the same events. Where does the truth lie, and can our memories be trusted? A psychologist who specialises in memory is employed by a dying wealthy banker to try and find a lost memory of a murder which happened in Paris in the 1970s when he was a student. Was he involved, or was it committed by a fellow student who was also there at the time? Or did it even happen at all? After the banker's death, the psychologist is curious enough to follow the case, and finds a web of different accounts and possibilities. An excellent and original mystery!

E O Chirovici’s literary psychological thriller is a smoothly written but thin affair that meditates on the nature of memory and the power of guilt but it’s hamstrung by a pompous main character whose reasons for investigating don’t quite ring true, a central friendship between two equally unpleasant men who I never connected with and an ending that feels like an unearned cheat and which left me unsatisfied.

Mulle resonoivia teemoja: psykologi, joka saa hoidettavakseen potilaan erikoisella pyynnöllä, tarinoita tarinan sisällä ja nyökkäyksiä klassiseen salapoliisikerrontaan ja noir-narratiiviin. Lukukokemuksena jopa 5/5: helppoa, nopeaa tekstiä, varsinainen page-turner ja sivumääräkin mitä mainioin.

This one didn’t end up being anything special but I’m a sucker for a fast paced plot driven mystery. Had a couple of issues with a couple of ways used to describe people - “hooker”, “mad/crazy/insane”.

This story kept me on my toes. The story starts with Joshua asking James, a well-known psychiatrist that does hypnosis, to help him. He woke up in Paris one night, with a dead woman in the tub; not knowing what happened or whether he killed her.
My brain kept coming with more and more theories, each one more intense than the last. There was just so much mystery, and I doubted every line that we were told. Was it really what happened, or just a fragment of their own imagination? Especially the part about the suitcase, I kept doubting everything because I wasn't sure if it was just drugs talking or reality. I absolutely love that, because thrillers were I'm doubting everything, even myself, are exactly what I love. I was convinced that Joshua wasn't really Joshua, but actually Abe; since his story was so odd and Abe seemed like a lunatic. Still, I kept denying it - I was so convinced of my theory.
Sadly, my theories were loads better than the actual reveal. Gosh, the ending ruined everything. Seriosuly, how far fetched do you want to go. Seriously, every single one of my theories would've been better than this vague bullshit, it was so weak argh. Such a great story, just to disappoint everyone with this bullshit end.
There are still so many unanswered questions too.
Then there's the Julie thing. That entire part of the plot was unnecessary and annoying, it didn't add anything and was just distracting. It would've been a lot better if that entire part of the story was left out, it was terrible.
So yeah, I liked the story a lot up until the end, even though not a lot happened, it kept me interested through its mystery. I'm so disappointed by how this turned out, it ruined my rating and the entire experience of this book. Really sad, it was so good up until the end.

Credeam ca se va ridica la inaltimea cartii Cartea Oglinzilor, dar am fost dezamagita.
Ca sa fie tacamul complet este re-editarea cartii publicate acum ceva vreme, exclusiv in limba romana, sub titlul O amintire de la Paris. Sunt una si aceeasi carte!!
Concluzie: autorii preferati o mai dau si in bara, asa ca nu ii pot da maximum de stele, din nefericire :)

Interessant verhaal, maar niet zo mysterieus en spannend als ik had gehoopt. De verhaallijnen en personages worden niet altijd goed aan elkaar verbonden waardoor het verhaal soms wat onduidelijk blijft.

Avem o crimă, dar cine-i autorul? Și cine-i cadavrul? La finalul cărții, nimic nu va fi așa cum ai presupus. O carte cu atât de multe secrete, încât am savurat fiecare dezvăluire ca și când era cea mai importantă. Un autor român care mi-a dat peste cap orice preconcepție legată de faptul că românii scriu doar „metaforicește”, cu descrieri poetice care te pierd și care nu-s deloc pe placul meu. Dați-i o șansă, dacă n-ați făcut-o încă. O merită cu vârf și-ndesat!

Het is een intrigerend verhaal. Een mysterie en het blijft boeien tot het - voor mij - verrassende einde.

Omdat het manuscript voor zijn eerste Engelstalige thrillerdebuut The book of mirrors door tientallen uitgevers afgewezen werd, stuurde Eugen O. Chirovici het naar een kleine uitgever toe. Deze was er bijzonder lovend over, maar gaf toch het niet uit. Wel adviseerde de uitgever hem om het toch nog eens naar een aantal literair agenten toe te sturen. Het vervolg is bekend, want het boek, in Nederland verschenen onder de naam Boek der spiegels, werd een wereldwijd succes en is inmiddels in 38 landen uitgegeven. Nacht in Parijs is zijn tweede boek en is op 7 augustus 2018 verschenen.
Na afloop van een lezing wordt de bekende psycholoog James Cobb door een man benaderd met het verzoek hem te helpen. Deze man, Joshua Fleischer, lijdt aan leukemie en heeft niet lang meer te leven. Hij wil dat Cobb hem in hypnose brengt om er op die manier achter te komen wat zich veertig jaar eerder in een Parijse hotelkamer heeft afgespeeld. Het enige wat hij zich herinnert is een dode vrouw op die kamer, maar of hij haar vermoord heeft of alleen maar een onschuldige aanwezige was, weet hij niet.
Na de proloog, die zich in 1976 en veertig jaar eerder afspeelt, maakt het verhaal een sprong naar elf maanden voor het heden. Die aanloop zorgt ervoor dat er al meteen wat vragen ontstaan waardoor zich al vroeg in het verhaal een spanningsveld voordoet. Het duurt echter even voordat er een antwoord op al die vragen komt, dat gaat geleidelijk en ook niet tegelijkertijd. Eerst bestaat het verhaal vooral uit een introductie van wat er aan lijkt te komen en ook van het belangrijkste personage, James Cobb. Dat is dan ook het meest oninteressante deel van Nacht in Parijs, het is enigszins traag en saai. Toch verandert dit snel wanneer Abe, de vriend van James bij het verhaal betrokken wordt. Vanaf dat moment boeit het en neemt de onderhuidse spanning toe. De grote vraag is dan wat er die nacht in Parijs is gebeurd, als lezer wil je dit het liefst zo snel mogelijk te weten komen, vooral omdat het intrigeert. Maar, en dat is niet minder interessant, hoe zit het met James en Julie Mitchell? Zij komt namelijk regelmatig in James’ gedachten voor en ook droomt hij over haar.
Nacht in Parijs draait vooral om herinneringen, want welke is juist en welke niet. En is alles wat herinnerd wordt wel echt gebeurd of heeft het geheugen in de loop van al die jaren steekjes laten vallen? Hierdoor ontstaat twijfel, zowel bij Cobb als bij de lezer. En ook dat is goed voor de spanningsboog. Het zijn trouwens niet alleen die herinneringen die daarvoor zorgen, maar ook de vraag of Cobbs ontdekkingen niet vooral uit leugens bestaan. Als de ontknoping nadert, kan de lezer namelijk het vermoeden krijgen dat er gelogen is en dat zich een persoonswisseling heeft voorgedaan. Of dit inderdaad zo is, wordt in de finale verduidelijkt. Tot het zover is, zijn er verschillende plotwendingen en kom je nog wel eens voor een verrassing te staan.
Hoewel het thema de schijn kan oproepen dat het een lastig leesbaar verhaal is, is dat het niet. Het leest natuurlijk niet als een vakantieroman, maar het is nergens complex en ingewikkeld en het heeft soms zelfs mooie vergelijkingen. De werking van het geheugen is een onmiskenbaar interessante materie, maar Chirovici doet er goed aan dit in een volgend boek anders aan te pakken. Want zowel zijn vorige boek als Nacht in Parijs hebben een vrij identiek thema en om lezers te blijven boeien, zal hij met een gevarieerder aanbod moeten komen. Dat neemt echter niet weg dat ook zijn tweede thriller van een hoogwaardige kwaliteit is.
