An Unexpected gift is much like other books of Ajay K Pandey. It has all the emotions, likeable and relatable characters as well as a social theme around which the plot revolves. I have already read his book "You are the best wife" and though I am not much into romance, I still enjoyed it. With this book, it was completely different. Abhay has lost his wife and is looking for someone to take care of his son. Sheetal can be the best mother and instantly bonds with the kid except that she's a transgender. The book very rightly dealt with the theme of homophobia and how difficult it is for transgenders to live a life of dignity.
The story is fairly beautiful and the writing is easy. I expected better prose but unfortunately, that's a rare sight in books by Indian authors. It is an enjoyable read though and one can easily finish the book in one sitting. Abhay's grief of losing his wife, his worries for his child were all very visible and I enjoyed reading about the emotions of a man because most of the time, authors get it wrong in writing or it isn't highlighted enough. These are some of the aspects that really made me like this book.

"Giving up is not an option when someone calls you mother."

Emotionally arousing and highly sensitive with a tinge of humour, "An Unexpected Gift" by Ajay K Pandey beckons its readers to a heart-warming journey of love, friendship and motherhood.

Struggling with the grief of losing his wife and trying hard to cope with work pressure, when Abhay yearns for a carer for his toddler son, Sheetal enters his life and instantly bonds with little Ayush, for all she had ever wanted was to be a mother but fate didn't allow her the opportunity. But, there is something about Sheetal that nags Abhay when she refuses to show him her identity card. What was she hiding? What happens when Abhay finally discovers her secret? Will he stand by her or abandon her like everybody else?

The book is written from three different perspective of Abhay, Sheetal and Abhay's father. This unique blend of outlooks makes the story more endearing as it contributes towards greater understanding of the views, pains and struggles of the characters and hence in establishing better connection with them.

The concept of a true "Hero" is vividly manifested in all the little actions that Abhay does which shows his compassion towards the transgender community and in all his fearless acts that defies the social norms in his quest to contribute towards establishing justice and equality in his own sweet little way.

Emotional as the tale is, it helps in bringing out the true meaning of love which is above all social norms, gender and physical barriers, political rules and even beyond any blood relations; love is just an amalgamation of two souls that accept each other exactly the way they are.

The book brilliantly showcases the plight of the transgender community and the cruelty of the society towards them who tags them as "dangerous" or "evil" or "impure" and looks at them as if they were a piece of filth, mistreated and abandoned even by their own family members.

The author does not forget to add a little humour here and there, sometimes in the comic character of their domestic help, Mohan while sometimes in the simple, innocent and funny ways that the toddlers behave.

A thin shroud of mystery envelopes over the story when Abhay wonders about the secret that makes Sheetal hide her identity as well as during the uncertainty of the events that would unfold after he unveils her secret and discovers the truth.

The agony of broken dreams also manifests itself time and again as Abhay shares his painful story of how he wanted to become an actor but ended up doing a job at a software company.

All through the overwhelming journey, the truth that gradually but meticulously reveals itself is how "woman" is not just a gender, but is actually a quality; and "mother" is not just a relation but is actually a feeling, an emotion, a promise to love someone unconditionally and beyond everything.

The book also skillfully explores the early scriptures of Mahabharata and the teachings of Lord Krishna which truly has answers to all our questions if we dare to dive deep enough into it.

The significance of Lord Shiva's "Ardhanarishwar" avatar is excellently brought out, contrasting it with the hypocrisy of the society that worships the Lord in his half-man and half-woman form, yet fail to accept humans who show the same character traits.

The character sketch is done with artistic efficicacy as every character is shown to grow, and evolve into being a better person. Not only Abhay who realises his mistakes and tries hard to work on them, or Sheetal who becomes more jovial and lively with the innocent touch of little Ayush, but even the comical, foolish, sarcastic and pure evil, Mohan is also shown to develop into a good human being in the end.

The title raises curiosity which isn't solved until the end of the book when the readers discovers what's the unexpected gift is and to whom it actually belongs.

The cover totally compliments the title, starring a big fat gift box carefully wrapped with the tag "An Unexpected Gift" hanging on it, that actually serves as the title of the book as well.

Woven with great efficiency, spun with unfathomable love and brewed with unexpected surprises, "An Unexpected Gift" by the best-selling writer Ajay K Pandey brings to its readers an emotionally resonant story that questions everything one believes about friendship, love and motherhood.

"A true hero is one who smiles through silent pain and fights battles nobody knows about."

I really liked reading this book. This is one of the books that has such a simple story to it, but the topic is on something that is so relevant in today’s world that the reader would immediately get hooked on to. It gives a glimpse of a transgender’s life in India, on how brutal their lifestyle is, and how brave they are for facing life day by day knowing the pain, ridicule and hardship that would need to face. It shows how prejudice and small minded some people can be when they encounter a transgender in the Indian society. Overall, this is a beautiful story of acceptance, friendship and a mother’s love while highlighting an important topic.

This was a great read. It dealt with such deep emotions and pain...it can change many people's perspective. It spoke about the ruthless life of a transgender woman and the emotions revolving her! But I had expected the ending to be something else,it could have been much better...the ending disappointed me...but the entire story is so warmly woven it can make anyone a better person!

"An unexpected Gift" is a story about a widower who is struggling to lead a life with his 15month old son, Ayush. His life takes a good turn (not unexpected) when a lady allows her service to take care of the child. Little did he know that she has a story to tell.

What I appreciate about the book is the use simple language and a linear story telling. You don't have to break your brain trying to understand the story or the characters. The author also avoids the typical trope where the child taker falls in love and blah blah.

There are no shocks or truths except for one point which is revealed by most of the reviewers in this platform. This is where I hate reviewers not mentioning that their review contains spoilers. To be fair, it's not a mind bending spoiler but as a reader, you will like to discover it during the flow.

The characters are pretty straight forward. One is a widower who struggles to maintain his work life and his small boy. Mohan, the cook is also a typical Indian male cook. No complication there. Sheetal is the surprise. As a reader you will get connected to her story. For me, she is the real hero of the story. I can't reveal more for the fear of talking about the plot. That's all there is to know about the characters in the book. Simple, isn't it?

Why 2 stars? Well, the story is simple but far too simple for my liking. There are emotional moments which may shed a tear or two but nothing that's mind bending. That's probably on me because of my reading style or reading lists. Having read complicated Adult fantasy novels, my expectations are on a different scale. It's not on the Author but on me having picked up the book. I got what I need, a fast breezy read, but an unsatisfactory mind.

Another element that fails the book is the narration. An author needs to show the story, not tell. Unfortunately for us, the author tells us all the information. Here are few examples: "Kanika was not the most humble, kind-hearted or down-to-earth person, but now she seemed not to have any enemies." "We loved each other immensely" - This made me roll on the floor and so on.

I suppose his audience are not the complicated readers like me. They are the ones who like a simple story with elements of love, emotion and bit of drama. Readers who don't want to go back and forth into checking each character and their story line. Readers who don't want too many characters involved. If you are such a reader, you will enjoy the book. If you aren't, stay away.

Representation in media matters and when people use their voice to make a change and spread awareness especially about a community that is still fighting for basic human rights, the notion itself, makes someone like me, feel tremendous respect for them. When I read the blurb and did some research, I found myself having an idea about what the book might have in store for me. I was already delighted by the approach the author decided to take on the matter but still was skeptical if the execution would be as good as the concept. Fortunately, It didn't disappoint.

Sheetal enters Abhay's life at a time when he's desperately in need for an outer force that will help him find some balance between the loss of his wife and the inability to take care of his child, Ayush.

She takes upon the job to be a nanny for his kid and slowly and steadily brings a sense of stability in a family that was falling apart. She showers love on Ayush like his own mother would've if it wasn't for her demise. She also becomes a friend and a support system for Abhay and they form a bond of friendship.

Except, Friendships thrive on trust and Sheetal seems to be a reserved person and reluctant to share her identity which makes it hard for Abhay to form a fully concrete companionship. It bothers him to an extent that he decides to find out exactly what it is that Sheetal is hiding and why is there a need for her to keep a secret at all?

When he finds his answer, he realizes he's being left with a dilemma where he must make the right choice but doesn't know if he has the strength to do it.

This book takes you on a journey which starts with grief and gradually develops into a story about trust, companionship and motherhood.

The writing style is simple and lucid and though it took me a while to get used to the way the author weaves his words, by that time, I was already immersed in the storyline.

The narration is smooth and the way intense emotions and inner turmoils of the characters were portrayed it made them relatable and even to some extent, realistic.

I appreciate how the author did justice to the notion that he had in mind and how such a crucial topic was handled so beautifully.

I do think the cover is not the best choice for such a story but it's just a preference.

I totally recommend this book.

An unexpected gift, the title makes complete sense as the story progresses to culmination. The story bears characters that add different essence in their own way.

Abhay, married to Kanika, loses her to an ailing battle leaving behind their son, Aayush. Managing his grief, a job and the apple of his eye becomes overwhelming to Abhay at times. This eventually leads to the entry of Sheetal.
Sheetal is an amazing human being, destined to be a selfless, caring mother with a slight twist. The love that she showers on Ayush and her perseverance to face the world relieves Abhay from all his worries about his son and also it clears the rudimentary clutters he bears.
Subhajit is a less spoken character, still brings a different approach in the fable, person who might compel you to believe in the prevalent goodness of the world.
Mr. Ashok, also mentioned lesser, contributes to mending Abhay's beliefs about society through his epic and religious references from Dwapar yug and the Mahabharata.
Last but not the least, Kanika becomes the guiding light to Abhay, incognito, lifts up his spirits and encourages him to step towards, what might seem extremely aching to heart but soothing to the soul.

The cover photo of the book is totally justified by the title and content of thr story. Every chapter ends with a satisfying plot end and the next one begins relatably.
Ajay Sir, as usual has done complete justice to his art of storytelling. A perfect blend of emotions, soaked up in love and strength, lessons delivered with some spice of humor to keep up the edge to readers.
a must read to vent out the inner turbulences and think about upgrading to a better version of ourselves.

How does a transgender face all the taunts and sluggish comments of the society? Why and how long has a 'eunuch' been facing them? Have you read something that can change your perspective towards them? Well, this book will help you to understand the pain of a transgender woman who wants to be a mother.

The cover of the book looks good and interesting. It goes good with the story.

The story is about Abhay who is devastated when his wife dies of cancer, leaving him all along to raise their only son Ayush. Then Sheetal enters his life as a babysitter of Ayush. But all Sheetal has ever wanted, even as a child, is to be a mother. The almost instant bond between her and little baby is balm to her soul and like a godsend to Abhay.

Story moves ahead well still something about Sheetal nags at Abhay. What is she hiding? What happens when Abhay discovers her secret? And what is the gift that will change their lives?

This book talks about the struggle of transgender men and women to lead their respectful live. Easy-to-grasp language and impeccable writing make it the perfect book to curl up with on a lazy day. Narrating the story on a totally different concept, it takes readers through a journey of an emotional and sensitive ride of every characters. Also,I am sure the ending will leave the readers with tears of happiness. Reading more like a contemporary fiction, this book can be of immense help to cope up with social issues.
Overall, it's a good read and highly recommended.

A beautiful and emotional read!

The book brings out a very important perspective on transgenders and their lives. The book makes you ponder on some very important questions that hanger around in our society... Isn't emotionally all human beings the same? Isn't our so-called matured and advanced society still living in the stone age when it comes to equality to all human beings? Can I and my family accept a transgender in our close circle? Or are we actually hypocritical?

The story mainly revolves around Abhay (a widower) and Sheetal (a transgender woman/eunuch). The other main characters in the story are Kanika (Abhay's deceased wife); Ayush (Abhay and Kanika's son - a toddler); and Subhajit - Sheetal's husband. So if you are like me, who gets confused with lots of characters or remembering names, then you will definitely enjoy reading the book as there aren't many characters in the book. The story goes at a steady pace without any surprises or twists. It would have been good if the writer could have built the characters a bit more. However, overall the story is simple and I enjoyed reading it thoroughly.

Heart melting

I'm a mother of a two year old toddler and this realistic read really touched the cord... Tears were flowing and I was tightly hugging and kissing my child sleeping peacefully besides me.

On the reading note--
A lovely, simple and realistic read. Very relatable and believable with the minute everyday descriptions given beautifully.
The story was gripping, about the struggles and difficulties a trans gender faces in society, about their dream, aspirations and expectations from life, about the soft motherly heart they too could hold, I loved it..... if you prefer stories based on real human-relationship theme you'll definitely going to like this book.

I also liked the Language and style which kept the flow smooth and page flipping. Characters were very natural.
It was my first book from the writer and I am heading to read some more from him.

An Unexpected Gift By Ajay K Pandey is a beautiful story of Abhay, Sheetal & Aayush. Sheetal is a transgender and fighting everyday battle like other transgender suffers. But she is different and got the best gift from Abhay which was unexpected and that is why this book is named as “An Unexpected Gift”. Interesting, right?

This book will change your perception towards transgender. It definitely changed mine. Transgenders are also normal people like us, they too have dreams and life.

Well done Ajay Sir.

A story of hope, positivity, and of today.

This story made me think many times and question myself what was going on in the story was right. Had I been in the protagonist's place, would I be doing the same thing or believe in that? Many things we say but did not believe in it and said it for the sake of being righteous. This book made me ask myself what I believe in and why.

I like the story for the uniqueness in the plot and full of unexpected twists and turns.

Offered by Prime read, wild selection. A simple story, but powerful emotions.
Feels like parts of the story are similar to our own lives.
The important highlights are delivered simply, no artificial drama, dialogues, no screaming. I think this is the high point of the entire book. And a special mention for the boss. A rare species who has sympathy.

"An Unexpected Gift" by author Ajay K. Pandey is a phenomenal book written in a precise manner but leaves huge impacts on the readers.

The book follows the story of Abhay, who lost her wife Kanika because of cancer and is now trying to manage their life with their toddler, Ayush. Their story takes a twist when Sheetal comes into life as the caretaker of Abhay's Son, and becomes that missing part of their life, and takes over the place of mother for Ayush.

But wait, Sheetal has some secrets; that is the base of this storyline. Her journey throughout the story gets exploration that leaves you with so many thoughts and tears.

The book has more characters. Like Abhay's servant Mohan, his boss Mr. Rao, and Shubhajeet, what are their roles?

How the life of Abhay changes after it and How this "Unexpected gift" reached to his deserving"station"

You'll explore everything in it while you learn and understand the value of the Ardhnarishwar Shiva Statue while reading this brilliantly crafted book with a crux of strongly written characters and plots.

The author deserves big applause for crafting love in this inspirational manner with strong message.🌻

The charming tale An Unexpected Gift revolves around Sheetal, a little child with some secrets from her background, and Abhay, a widower father who is making a lot of effort to adjust to his new role as a single parent. Their lives will alter when Sheetal arrives to look after Abhay's son. She quickly becomes a significant figure in them. The book draws inspiration from a real-life persona, and each character is given a voice and characterization of remarkable quality.

The plot addresses the various obstacles and prejudices that members of the third gender face in contemporary society. Nevertheless, Sheetal is one of them; her personality bears witness to her persistent faith and strength. Being a caregiver, she always had a hopeful look on her face.

Is a woman's identity defined exclusively by her ability to be a mother?

No , A woman can be a daughter, a friend, a wife , a colleague.

🦋 Abhay has just lost his wife to brain tumor. He is unable to manage his little toddler and office together. Nor is he able to move on from his Wife Kanika whom he loved immensely.

🦋 After a lot of juggling he finds a baby sitter Sheetal. She is a young and beautiful woman. She is educated, yet she is seeking the job of a Babysitter. Abhay hires her to take care of his son Ayush.

🦋Abhay notices that Sheetal is very Mysterious and she is hiding something from him.

What is Sheetal trying to hide ? What happens when Abhay finds out Sheetal's secret? Will he stand by her or abandoned her like the rest of the world?

A touching story of love in it's purest form. Ajay has portrayed the harsh reality of society in this story perfectly. Abhay's pain is heartbreaking. Sheetal's character is meticulously written, her hardships and pain touch your heart. Yet she is always calm and smiling. The twist left me shocked as I was not expecting it. My favorite line from the book are " A true hero is one who smiles through silent pain and fights battles nobody knows about." Overall a good read.

Abhay, a normal married man griefs about the demise of his wife due to cancer. Now the responsibility of his tiny son Ayush falls on his shoulders. He will not be able to balance the work life and personal life balance. He keeps going late to office after finishing and prepping Ayush at home. His boss sees his struggle to cope up with his responsibilities and suggests him to get a caretaker. He suggests a woman as a caretaker to Abhay. His Boss mentions “Always believe what you see and not what you hear about someone”.
Now Sheetal comes as a caretaker for Ayush and Abhay starts suspecting her moves. She keeps her identity as a secret and denies providing her Aadhar card for security verification. Soon Sheetal discloses her identity, which leaves Abhay in shock. Sheetal is a transgender. He dismisses her from work. He internally fumes on his boss. His boss explains the concept of ardhanarishwar beautifully. He gets back Sheetal to work and convinces secretary Ashok uncle with security documents of Sheetal. Ashok explains the transgender pleasingly by relating transgender to shikandi in Mahabharata. Sheetal becomes very close to Ayush. On reading at a pace you will find what is the precious little gift.

* Ayush has 2 mothers now. One Kanika and other Sheetal. He is Krishna having Devaki and Yashoda. Such a beautiful love.
* A kid is never bothered by gender because of their pure innocent heart. On other hand we being matured people judge everyone.
* This book beautifully depicted about the nosy society around us. Escaping from its shackles is really difficult.
* Sheetal is so insecure about showing her identity to society, as she knows how all the eyes will taunt her.
* Don’t judge a person by their gender in this progressive world. This is a huge take away.

Few lines that really got me blowing are below:

~ Ardhanarishwar:
Shiva is referred to as ultimate man. He is symbol of ultimate masculinity. The ardhanari principle illustrates how female principle of God, Shakti, is inseparable from male princliple of God, Shiva. Masculine and feminine does not mean male and female. The “feminine” and “masculine” are certain qualities
~ if we could accept a transgender man as a king thousands of years ago, then why should we have a problem employing transgender woman now?
~ we often keep gifts we have received in good condition, but never really cherish them
~ if you love him the same way Sheetal does, he might start calling you mamma too.

This book is certainly for everyone. It depicts the love between husband and wife, love between friends, love of parents towards their chinldren most importantly love of mother and child. There are many instances in the book that can make you emotional.

Never judge a book by it's cover. We often say that... But do we follow that..? No .. not everyone .. We always develop a certain judgement about anyone by his/her appearance. We forget about the soul. Every human being is a soul. There is no gender. Everyone is unique in his/her ways and choices. At the starting of the book there was the character was fighting with the grief of loosing his beloved wife for whom only he was a hero. Leaving a six month's child with his father, she dies. Husband loses all his focus in his life , unable to care of his child, unable to focus on his work, when he is about lay off from his job, he found a caretaker for his around year child. He doubted the identity of his caretaker as she is not like the normal woman. After coming to know that she's transgender, he lays her off from the job. But after realising his mistake he again let her to do the caretaker job . with the presence of new caretaker the child starts to grow. The caretaker treats him as her own child. He calls her mammma... When the entire world was against even giving her a job, he, Ayush, accepted her as she was. Loved her the way she was. The book also points to the issues faced by trans people in our society. We must think them as of human beings . They are not just born for dancing on the streets, they too deserved a life, job , friends and life partner. There are very good quotes in the book... Which are

A true hero is one who smiles through silent pain and fights battles nobody knows about.’

The life is the biggest theatre, where the real hero has to sacrifice and smile at any cost.

The best decisions in life are always the hardest ones.’

Giving up is not an option when someone calls you mother.

Eating out is not just about food. It is the experience and the company that counts.

And many more...

I insist everyone to read it once.... Really can be an eye-opener to many people. Our society needs more people like abhay... A true hero...

Great work by Author Mr. Ajay Pandey..

‍‍‍This is the fourth book of Ajay and the latest that he has written yet, I have read all his books and I know the way he writes which is pretty good, it's simple but very easy to read as well as to perceive the words and the feelings which makes his books perfect for beginners. Now this book which I was expecting to be amazing was in fact something that I have never read before because it discussed something that the society doesn't accept and if you know me this book was a really good read because I live to defy social norms. This book has 213 pages which is a very quick read and so is the content, the book is smooth and very pacey but it won't keep you on your toes because there's not much suspense, which is very common for his books as he focuses more on the story. The story of this book revolves around two main characters, the first being Abhay and the second is Sheetal, now it's not a love story but a story that will teach you about love and you will love some people whom you have ignored or heated for the most of your life. The characters are pretty good and relating with them is very easy, as Ajay writes the characters with all there flaws which makes them seem vulnerable and human. Ajay's books have always been something more than just the core story, so you will find yourself worrying about something totally unrelated to the main story as you read this book which wasn't a bad thing for me it's for you to decide how you feel about that. The thing that I love about his books the most is that the side characters also get to share their side of the story which makes us unbiased and we get to know the story from different perspectives which I love to be able to do. There are many typos in this book but it's not something that will completely ruin your reading experience, other than this the book, An unexpected Gift is a recommended read it's not just a book with a story it's has something that our society should be aware, so please read it.

Book Name: An Unexpected Gift
Author: Ajay K Pandey
Publication: Westland Publications.

 This is my second book read after “You are the best Wife”.
 The author “Ajay Pandey” has a unique, simple and engaging art to connect through his book.
 Abhay loses his wife Kanika when their child is too small. He struggles to match pace with his personal and professional life. He finds a babysitter through his boss recommendation. Abhay is in shock and dismay when he discovers the babysitter, Sheetal is a transgender. Though he is not angry on her identity but for the fact she hid her identify from him.
 Sheetal love for Ayush was that of as cold waters to a thirsty soul.
 The author, Ajay Pandey beautifully portrays the struggles and tussle that a transgender faces to lead a normal life in our modern society.
 Some incidents make you ponder as being a respectable citizen and our duties to society.
 Language is very simple and a quick read.
 A bit emotional towards the end and comparison between Krishna’s two mothers Devaki and Yashoda was apt and vivid.
 The author has vividly substantiated the character with a touch of mythological fact and leaves a guilt feeling of being blindfolded towards the fake concept and the comfort web weaved among us.
 This book gave a new perspective of thinking that transgender person life is they are far beyond dancing and singing on the street. It displayed the other side of them which longs to be a mother, a daughter, a sister, a wife and above all to be acknowledged as a third gender in the society to lead a normal happy life.

My favorite lines are – “ A true hero is one who smiles through silent pain and fights battles nobody knows about”.

Easy to grasp language and flawless writing makes it a single sitting read

Book : An Unexpected Gift
Author (friend) : Ajay K. Pandey
Publisher : Westland

My Rating : 5/5 stars

The most simple way to write about such a crucial topic and in so effective manner that I personally feel attached to each and every character.

Abhay, with a year old son, whose wife Kanika, died of brain cancer and he was unable to manage his personal and professional life due to his loss. How Sheetal enters his life via his boss recommendation, who is hesitant to show her adhaar card, but worked for 2 months as a nanny for his son Ayush. But later when the truth reveals Abhay initially dismiss her from the job just because she has betrayed him by not telling the truth initially. But later he reappointed her for the job. And after that the story takes a beautiful turn. The hardships Sheetal has to face in her life and how the society in which Abhay lives treats him moves the story ahead very brilliantly. And in the end it was seriously an unexpected gift which Abhay gave to Sheetal. The initial life story of both Abhay and Sheetal was also interesting to read.

It is a story based on true incidents and I really appreciate the way the Author has portrayed a transgender character and her feelings. The motherly love she has, despite of facing so much from the society is still there and she keeps a smiling face. It is the feelings that matters the most.

All the other characters, Abhay's father, his mother, Mohan (servant of Abhay), Ashok Ji (Abhay's society secretary), Subhajit (Sheetal's friend and later husband) and Mr. Rao (Abhay's boss) and have played a significant role in the story.

I would recommend this book surely. Read it, it will change you as a person in many ways. A true sense of NEVER SURRENDER!
