Wolf Moon

Rate this book
While on an illegal deep-space silver ore mining mission, the crew of the Macrae—1391 investigates a mysterious distress signal. Landing on a synthetically atmosphered asteroid on the dark side of the Moon, they discover a jettisoned escape pod, bringing back a lone survivor who incubates an awful secret.

When exposed to the Moon's lunar rays, an ancient evil is reborn to stalk and pick off the crew, one by one.

Can Captain Jennifer Hadley overcome the ghosts of her past to stop the beast? Will muscle-bound grunts Cade Chiarella and Jones Easterbrook turn the creature into a living-room rug? Will playboy mining expert Shane Conroy finally do something useful to stop the monster? Can engineer Kyle Norrington's knowledge of twentieth-century horror cinema save them all?

No matter how their night of terror ends, there is one thing they will never forget: In space… there's always a full moon.

When I saw the beautiful cover for this book, I just had to read it. “Like a tractor beam…sucked me right in.” The book starts out as we meet our motley crew in a futuristic world. The portion about Meat Hogs and the way humans ate was a really cool concept. So we meet the characters, and they all agree to go illegally mine pure silver on an asteroid. We’ve all been there, right? Sure enough, they get a distress signal and we now have a space werewolf that’s got robotic limbs chasing them?! And there’s plenty more, so I assure you that I’m not spoiling anything. The whole thing stunk of a glorious callback to 80s horror. Big personalities, tons of action, awesome one-liners, quirky humor, ridiculous situations, a surprisingly reasonable level of blood and gore, and no logical explanation to the extent that the plot goes. But ya know what? Much like the best 80s horror films, it wasn’t explained and it didn’t need to be. You just enjoyed the pure spectacle for what it was, totally on a surface level aspect, and loved every minute of it. And that was my experience here, too. I had a great time and thought this was all executed very well.

Reading Wolf Moon took me back to the time when I would go to the video store, rent a cheesy horror movie or three (usually on the basis of the box art alone) and would go home and settle in with some popcorn and Pepsi for a night of scary, spooky fun.
Wolf Moon literally reads as if you are watching one of those cheesy horror films. I could see each and every scene playing out in my head as if I were watching it on my TV instead of reading words and pages. This book is a love letter to 80's horror from the characters, the references to horror and non-horror movies and right down to the front and back cover art. This book is ludicrous, ridiculous and above all else it's freaking AWESOME!
Highly recommended!

There is an introduction by the author at the start of this book about how he watched videos in the early 90’s and mentions 1993 specifically.

The reviews mention the 80’s video feel to the story, which is the decade I am going with, rather than the 90’s.

First up is the cover. It is the perfect 80’s VHS cover which would jump out when browsing through all the VHS tapes at my local video rental store. How I miss those!

This book also reminded me of the 80’s sci-fi/horror movie Saturn 3. Along with Alien and Aliens.

While reading this story I could not help but feel like I was watching an 80’s sci-fi horror B-movie.

A bunch of minors (great mix of characters, including one who loves old video movies) go to an asteroid to dig out some silver. They receive a distress call from an escape pod and the werewolves start to show up. Plenty of gore and violence follows.

The tagline is brilliant! “In Space…..There’s always a full moon”

For obvious reasons the cover and the book design compelled me to buy this book.

But also I have been craving more horror sci-fi and I was really excited to dive into this one.

This is almost like Alien with werewolves and a lot of fun movie references.

A crew of misfits are on a mining mission when they decide to answer a distress call. This will lead them to an injured man that they decide to take on board and help. This will be the biggest mistake of their lives.

An action packed fun and entertaining quick read for fans of alien and other space horror flicks.

The writing was not my favorite but the story and the characters was what kept me entertained.

3.5* I enjoyed the premise, very Aliens inspired which was great fun! I felt the second half was a little rushed but as a novella I thought this was entertaining!

This was a lot of fun, Werewolves in space this is a Straight to VHS type story, with a few pop culture references, this story had some great unique elements and kills, I would have loved to see a the carnage start sooner, but apart from that I loved it.

I'm not great w/ summaries but let's get it out of the way, shall we? Firstly, I'll keep the top half as spoiler-free as possible.

In the future of 2083...one would say a motley crew (haha see what I did there? Yeah I know I'm not funny) of miners are hired to go asteroid digging for silver (hm I wonder if in a werewolf book that silver will be a Checkov's gun) when they get a distress call from a seemingly abandoned escape pod. Of course, they rescue said person from said pod, who's in extremely bad shape. Like dude shouldn't have a shape with how little there seemed to be left of him. They patch him up and try to head back to Earth. Once they reach the lit (ha) side of the moon, let's just say shiteth hiteth the fan-eth. People die (spoilers below on who) gloriously gory ass deaths and it's just a great time. Seriously. Read the f*cking book!!

Review and spoilers below:

WARNING SPOILERS DO NOT READ PAST THIS POINT!!!

Also, please note, I swear like sailor spinning a tall tale. I don't like to censor myself. K thnx bye (not really please read my review?)!

Review:

Ok to be honest at first I wasn't really connecting to the character, but I liked the fact that there was a death in the opening chapter. Woot! But once we got on board, the characters Captain Hadley, Chiarella, Easterbrook (love this gal personally), and Norrington grew on me. Conway did NOT. I was begging for his death the moment he was introduced and luckily I got my wish. Because this bastard dies like a bitch! Tore up from the floor up (ok mainly he was just torn to pieces on the floor by a pack of hungry ass werewolves). So, the big twist, Conway's a dick (big surprise) and he sold the crew out to the company that hired them to bring in a SPACE WEREWOLF!

Oh did I not mention this book is about Werewolves IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCE!!!

Yeah, apparently the pack left Earth when technology became too advanced and there wasn't a way they could flourish (you know by eating humans). They landed on an asteroid on the glowing side of the moon and became what is known as Lycan. Real subtle. So, after Norrington dies after being cut in half, Chiarella gets his face eaten, and Easterbrook becomes escape pod wall decorating; Hadley decides to infect herself w/ werewolf blood, so she can get vengeance for her crew and herself.

Anyway, Conway takes over the ship, Hadley starts to transform, they land on Lycan (bc the werewolf that is currently captured in an escape pod reprogrammed coordinates to the Home asteroid to pick up his family) and Hadley lets her new family into the ship. They eat Conway and then Hadley piolets the ship to a nearby rescue ship and the werewolves eat everyone on board while Hadley takes them to Earth...to fuck up the humans and the greedy corporations that killed Earth's nature.

*screech* Wait, what? The werewolves win?!

YES! HELL YES!! FINALLY!!! WOOOOOOHOOOO!!!!

So, yeah I enjoyed this book. It was simple there isn't much that shocks you (except that awesome ending) but that's what I like about it. It's just a fun book that one could easily sit down and read in one day. Like I did.

Did I mention the gore? IT IS GLORIOUS!! So beautifully detailed and it just satisfies my little dark heart.

Thank you for reading! Toodles!

Werewolf in space ! How cool is that ? This David Iron's novella is a love letter to 80's action/horror/sci fi.Think "Aliens" meets " An American Werewolf in London".Highly recommended for anyone looking for a short, fast paced read, with enough pop culture references, action and gore to keep you entertained.Bonus point for the amazing VHS inspired cover.

A fun Video Nasty of a Novella that made me feel like I had grabbed a movie from the video store shelf. One of the most unique werewolf transformation scenes I have seen in a while. I loved it!

Easterbrook laughed sardonically. 'You gotta be kidding me, right? We've been running on mining missions, deep space missions, and all we've ever found is some basic life molecules for a test jar, never anything living or breathing, ready to tear your asshole from the rest of your body.'
Hadley glared at the muscular woman. 'You wanna stick your head around the door and tell it that it doesn't exist?'

Setting:
This book takes place on a spaceship.

Character:
Hadley: Hadley is the captain of an illegal mining operation. She’s still trying to get over a recent trauma that has changed her view on things.

Plot:
While out doing some unapproved mining, Hadley and her crew find a wounded man on an asteroid. They do the right thing and try to save him, but altruism might not have been the best idea this time.

My Thoughts:
Irons spends a significant amount of the limited page length introducing each member of the crew that will feature in the later action. This does mean that the characters aren’t entirely faceless nobodies but the characterization is still rather limited so we wind up with ultimately one trait for each of the crew members; tough lady, sexual guy, old fashioned guy. Hadley gets a touch more work done on her character but it’s largely only related to one thing that happened to her and how she’s coping with that thing.

All of this attempting at characterization means the action of the store is very slow to get started. Things don’t really kick off until around the 50% mark, which is fairly far in. Once things do start going they are enjoyably tense and gruesome.

Ultimately it’s a decent novella if a little slow to get going.

I bought this a year ago for the outstanding cover. And who doesn’t like Werewolves. However, I just read this and although it does have an interesting storyline the bottom of every page is missing a sentence or two making it extremely difficult to read (I posted a picture of one instance of this on Amazon review. But it is throughout the book). Not sure if this is an isolated incident with just my copy or not. But if you do buy it I recommend reading it right away so you are still in return window if you get a defective copy.
NOTE: Rating is for the defective copy of the book I received not the story itself. And as I said the book cover is fantastic.

I can't rate this book and I'm devastated by that because while I was really enjoying it, I received a copy with pages out of order. What would end on one page with a period would start the next page mid-dialogue. It happened about 4 times before I had to put the book down because I didn't understand what was happening and was missing chunks of the story as a result.

A novella sorely lacking in fun. The book likes to style itself after the B-Movie creature features of yesteryear but is rather cookie cutter. From start I knew how the story would end. I can’t recommend this novel.

This book was everything I expected and wanted. The author talks about how it’s meant to be like an old SciFi channel film and you can tell. This is not a bad thing for me, I love B horror fits and stories. Gory and humorous. I will be reading more by this author.

A really good time! Fast paced, a nice amount of gore, the story stayed interesting. Definitely recommend. Especially if you like werewolves, 80's/synthwave aesthetic, and sci fi.
