Every Halloween, Satan's Affair will come to you.

We travel the country, offering terrifying haunted houses, thrilling rides and the tastiest food. And with every passing town, I cleanse this world, one execution at a time.

I hide within the walls, casting my judgement for those that reek of evil, singing lullabies to their rotting souls.

Once you've been chosen, there's no escaping my henchmen—they cater to my every desire.

You can run and you can hide, but it only excites me.

Come.

Take a walk through my dollhouse, where your screams will blend and your cute little pleas will go unanswered.

But I can't promise it'll be over quickly...

listen... i promise soon i'll give reading booktok smut a rest because obviously we don't get along but i genuinely cannot comprehend why a book like this qualifies as romance.

gratuitous gore, psychopathic characters, and in the end, a "plot twist" that demonizes people with mental illness. i only read this because the author recommends it as a prequel to her main series haunting adeline, and if this book is any indication, maybe i should quit while i'm ahead. yall have to start separating your "smut recommendations" between porn that was done for shock value and actually quality stuff because i'm getting tiirreeeeddddd

Sybil works at Satan's Affair where they will travel across the country, providing horrific haunted houses, exhilarating rides, and delectable cuisine every Halloween. Yet with each passing town, Sybil will ensure that one execution is carried out at a time, ridding the earth of the stench of evil and decaying souls. And with the help of her henchmen, the evils' screams and cries will surely suspend and go unheard.

I started this book because I wanted to read the author's Cat and Mouse Duet, and I have to say, I was not expecting it to be that gory and vicious. I've been debating whether or not to DNF this book because of all the explicit stabbings and bloodiness it depicted. Not to say, I find it a bit tedious at first and the smut felt a bit superfluous given the premise. I wouldn't think I'll enjoy them anyway.

However, the plot twist makes up for it and it just makes so much sense towards the end, I'm quite baffled (in a good way). I would like to say more, but given that this is a novella — I don't feel like spoiling it. So, if you would love yourself a dark book on psychopaths, cults, and violence with a smudge of smuts. Maybe, this is what you're looking for all along.

There’s just something about a maniacal, blood thirsty girl that makes me happy. The more psychotic, the better and Sibel certainly doesn’t disappoint.

I’m loving Ms Carlton’s writing style, she’s very easy to read and she paints the perfect picture. As the story progresses I can see it so well it’s like I’m actually there. It’s funny when you can relate to an MC like this because I’m not afraid of her whatsoever, I’m with her every step of the way.

As an immense fan of revenge, I’ll always be down for a punishment that fits the crime or worse. As is the case with the mace; take it all bitch! (I know I have issues.)

It does start to feel a bit repetitive by the second half. I’m also kind of sad that I don’t find the RH element very scintillating, it feels rather rote.

Zade was a much needed addition that added just enough spice to keep this interesting. (I was gonna wait to read Haunting Adeline but not now. Cliffhanger be damned.)

Awesome plot twist in the epilogue, not that it’s the most original but made it interesting. The big question is what did Zade see?

"You can’t hide from fate. That’s the funny thing about destiny, even if you try to escape it, it will always find you."

Que...Ready for it? By Taylor Swift

I don't know why I had never read this novella as I have read the Cat and Mouse Duet. It is written with a past and present timeline and was the perfect amount of violence, blood, and gore for me. There were times when it felt a bit repetitive, but it was still enjoyable enough.

Sibel Dubois (Sibby) travels around the country with Satan's Affair, a carnival providing haunted houses, thrilling rides, and food during the months of fall. She rids the world of evil people with her five henchmen with an execution of one person per location.

Sibby had a rough life growing up in a cult run by her abusive father. So she is a bit deranged, and I loved every minute of it. She has her five henchman Moris, Timothy, Baine, Cronus, and Jackal, who help her with her life's mission of disposing of the souls who smell rotten and are evil.

"Not a single soul passes through the threshold of this house without me casting judgment— determining if evil resides in their soul."

Zade
was the perfect addition to this, and I loved the first interaction between them. As I had read the duet prior to this, I had forgotten about how it went down. It had me cackling so hard.

"You good demon slayer?
"Stop mocking me"
"Consider it a pet name"

The ending had a plot twist that I really wasn't expecting, and it makes sense. I just wonder what Zade saw when he had his encounter with Sibby. I would recommend reading this before the duet as Sibby does make an appearance in it. Though I wasn't confused with having read that first.

Favorite quotes and moments

“I’m not crazy!” I screech. I take a deep, calming breath and arrange the smile back on my face. “I’m just passionate.”

"But you can’t silence heartbreak. It’s loud and painful. Even after you grieve and heal, it lingers in the background, sliding back into your life just when you think you’ve overcome it."

Crazy people are the most interesting people in the world if you’d just let them be who they are."

'SATAN'S AFFAIR' Is a full length dark read by H.D. Carlton. If you've read 'Haunting Adeline' you stumble across the scene where we were first introduced to Zane.

'𝐎𝐧𝐞, (𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛) 𝐭𝐰𝐨 (𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛),
𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐝𝐲’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮...
𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞, 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫, 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫...

𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐞, 𝐭𝐞𝐧, 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧...'

After finishing ‘Haunting Adeline’ which I loved, I wanted to read something else by this author and I'm so glad I did because I really enjoyed this one and hope we go back to this crazy world again.

A wee bit twisted
A wee bit dark
This was so unique, so f#cked up, no romance, no pretty little words, this had me glued to the pages.
I can't even convey into words what this book was about because god even I have no idea and I just finished reading it!!

Sibby and her 'Henchmen' Mortis, Timothy, Jackal & Cronus are characters you've never encountered before, she eradicates evil from the world in her playground where she hides inside the walls, she can smell the rot in the men when they enter the traveling horror show as she strikes and kills one demon human at a time, she's been doing this for five years and no one suspects a thing.

“mommy smelled like black roses. daddy tainted her, and her petals started to wilt and decay.”

the only detail bothering me about this novella is the writing style. I had the impression that it was overly surperficiel and lacked in depth. to put it simply, it required more well transcribed scenes and better, better words to convey emotions. I couldn't give the gory scenes any credence because they seemed like a bad version of a parody featuring Mazikeen from the tv show Lucifer, and from the moment this thought invaded my head i couldn’t unsee it. however, the last revelation caught me off guard, and I was truly taken aback by it. but in the mayhem that were the last chapters, i am honestly glad that the narrative underlined and acknowledged in them that Sybil’s acts were not the reflection of a normal nor a stable behavior. BUT and it is a big BUT, the plot line once again curved on the infamous 'diabolizing a mental disorder'arc and it irked me a lil. sigh.

୧ ‧₊˚꒰ You can’t hide from fate. That’s the funny thing about destiny, even if you try to escape it, it will always find you. ꒱

ᯓ ✮˚ ⋅ one star

dnf at chapter 6, about 50%

I really tried, but I couldn't. even at first when I had no Intention to dnf it, I was hating it.

first of all, the writing was literally awful. It lacked so much depth and emotions.
and what I really was hoping for is that I wanted to know sibby's character more and connect to her more, but the writing style wasn't helping at all. and yes maybe it's a wrong choice of words and I know that carlton's writing has improved. but the writing in this one was so bad. It didn't engage me in the story at all.

and yeah the story - what was it?? I know that this is a novella and all, but still…..
It was all about her finding evil people and torturing and killing them, and then starting to have sex with her henchmen. I actually liked the henchmen in the cat and mouse duet; I found them kind of funny, but I think this novella made me really hate them.

so when I got to chapter 6, I couldn't take it anymore. when she and all of her henchmen started to have sex together, I really couldn't. I knew from the start that reverse harem isn't for me, but I thought since they're henchmen and they're not real, it will be fine. but in my defense they felt so real in this novella. how else would they be cleaning and hiding the bodies if they weren't real??

ngl, when I knew that zade was in this novella, I thought about just finishing it or even reading just the chapters that he appeared in. but zade wasn't really worth it.

thank u besties for buddy reading this with me, I had so much fun reading with u and hating on this book with u <3

No nieźle tu poleciała autorka XD

If you have ever watched. Freddy Krueger movies. You know this rhyme.

Satan’s Affair travelling around the country during the fall months, They have become quite famous. A travelling Halloween fair, with dozens of haunted houses, small thrill rides and plenty of food to gorge yourself on. Every year, the theme of their houses changes to avoid our guests walking through the same houses year after year, being scared by the same monsters.

But Lil do most people know what goes on in Sibel’s
haunted dollhouse.

Let me just give you tiny bit of background on Sibel Dubois

“ I’ve been fighting my entire life. Fighting Daddy and his punishments. Fighting to get out of a dangerous cult, just to fight the demons that riddle this Earth with filth. I’m no stranger to using my hands to defend myself no less than I use them to kill.”

I need to be honest here, I am not sure wtf I just read. This was Very disturbing reading with some serious ass triggers, very descriptive violence sex, with plenty of Twisted & Gory scenes, you’ll even find Reverse Harem

So with all that said, If you are not Faint at heart, then you are in the perfect place
Me personally I am not sure that I am ready for round two in this duet….. I think that I may need to take a step back before I pick up the next book…. But who knows I might just be as schizophrenic with psychopathic tendencies as Sibe for reading this type of dark romance

“He looks at me like I’m insane. That hurts my feelings.”

~ DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!!!!

im sorry but this is NOT my cup of tea and I just literally wasted my time. yes, it tore my heart out because of sibby’s horrible childhood but If u want to read it still, please for the sake of your mental health, stop when zade and her dispose of bodies. and chapter 6.

for starters, this book doesn't need to be read before Haunting Adeline. and i have got more bad things to say than good.

i gave this book a one star mainly because i can’t go below that.. and the other half is for the horror theme this book has. im definitely and figuratively having nightmares tonight mainly because the author did a little too good of a job at writing sibby’s pov. and yet the writing style was awful. it definitely gave psychopath and delusional and insane and extremely disturbing and disgusting all at the same time. how is that even possible? i have no clue.

I’m not a prude and I know In the real world there’s a lot of evil and sick stuff that goes on but I could BARELY and i mean, BARELYYYY make it pass chapter 6, it’s vile and revolting and to think that someone imagines this for entertainment disturbs me greatly, it’s horrific, perhaps the storyline itself would have been interesting if she made sibby’s pov a little less creepy and psychotic.

beyond disturbing - do not recommend. ever.

Hello, Wes Craven; meet Rob Zombie and walk through the Great American Nightmare, and we have our psychopath named Sibby with her henchmen. These are the vibes I got from this novella. Such great vibes. Satan’s Affair is a dark erotica novella, which I devoured and (some may think its a horror novella)tremendously enjoyed.

Sibby has a unique way of deciphering evil and expunging them from this world with her henchmen in tow. She is crazy and rightfuly so.. The setting is a Haunted traveling carnival, and what better way to rid evil.

“I’m not crazy!” I screech. I take a deep, calming breath and arrange the smile back on my face. “I’m just passionate.”

I love a good blood thrusty heroine and H.D. Carlton nailed it!!!!. I absoutly love where she went in this novella. This book is full of blood, gore, guts, and steam. Heed the trigger warning it's not for the faint of heart. I can not say enough how highly I recommend this book if you have love all things dark. The cover is a work of art and a must to add to my bookshelve.

I’m gonna keep this brief. I hated it. When I saw Villains Do It Better review/DNF I knew I was treading up a hill with this one so if you like stuff like this sure as heck give it a try don't make my words stop you. The setting was the one bright spot with it being atmospheric and clearly a fun house. I cannot really cover this without major spoilers so be warned. This was quite dark and very explicit even for me.

I read this because it was labelled as encouraged to read before Haunting Adeline I assume Zane is gonna have his moment. I pray that it doesn't go down like this.

She's got a purpose, free the world from evil people.
So when evil men enter her doll house, she kills them, she loves to chase them with two creepy songs and it's the way this book begins...

“You’re not normal?” I ask, my curiosity piquing.
“The interesting people never are, demon slayer.”

Don't know what to say after reading this....
This thing was all fucked up but so far I enjoyed it. I want to know more about Sibby because everything about her is so confusing right now. Sibby is a complicated character. Her past was painful and heartbreaking to read and the things she did were wrong because she is doing all that based on her judgement. I can't decide if she's evil or not... and sometimes she's even got morals when she's not killing people like a demon slayer 👀

“Sometimes, when I’m really bored, I’ll cut the skin from whatever demon I’ve cast judgement on and use their skin as a dress.”

Also Zade and Sibby together were hilarious 😭💀 I was literally laughing when they were threatening and murdering people 😭

“You’re an interesting person, Sibby. But I’m going to need you to calm the fuck down. I can’t interrogate in peace when you’re over there stabbing someone like a cracked-out banshee, you feel me?”

I only have one question right now. WHAT DID ZADE SEE WHEN HE WAS WITH SIBBY??

“How can you tell me I’m not seeing what I’m seeing, just because you can’t see it, too? Why do the shortsighted people get to claim what is and isn’t sane?”

“𝚁𝚎𝚊𝚕 𝚖𝚘𝚗𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚛𝚜 𝚍𝚘𝚗’𝚝 𝚠𝚎𝚊𝚛 𝚖𝚊𝚜𝚔𝚜.”

So maybe I’m deranged at this point, but I FREAKING loved this!! Consider my reading slump officially cured! ✔️✔️✔️✔️

Plans to immediately start Cat and Mouse Duet! I.AM.SO.EXCITED! I am so ready!

Satan’s Affair is the prequel novella for the Cat and Mouse Duet and is highly recommended by the author to be read first, so I obeyed. I’m so glad I did!

Sibby
The focus of the novella is on Sibel (known as Sibby to her friends), a side character who apparently later makes an appearance in the Duet. She travels around the country with Satan’s Affair, a traveling Halloween fair of haunted houses, cleansing/executing evil people. Sibby is psychotic and unhinged!! She totally gave me Harley Quinn vibes even if it is more like a Harley Quinn on steroids haha. I’m a huge Harley Quinn supporter in case you didn't notice! Sibby's background was quite disturbing, and I was super pleased that the novella included flashbacks and details. It really helped me to understand her better.

“Normal people—the ones who occupy this world without contributing much to it—they wouldn’t understand. Whether they’re pure or not, murder is wrong in their eyes, even if it’s justified. It doesn’t matter that I do this for them. They’re just weak.” ~ Sibby

“Not a single soul passes through the threshold of this house without me casting judgment—determining if evil resides in their soul. As they make their way through the maze of my dollhouse, I watch from inside the walls. They’re all judged. Every single one of them.” ~ Sibby

“I’m not crazy!” I screech. I take a deep, calming breath and arrange the smile back on my face. “I’m just passionate.” ~ Sibby

“Sometimes I get like this. The littlest things set me off, and I can’t control the pure rage flowing through my body.” ~ Sibby

The first half of the novella did feel a bit redundant, and I could not help but feel a lot of what was happening was done merely for shock value. It was quite gory! I found myself saying aloud “what?!” and “ah!” every few pages! Three word example: the bat scene! Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t bother me or scare me away by no means, but I prefer my reads like this when they also contain lots of conflicts, shocking twists, and a strong plot. So, I had to keep reminding myself this is just a prequel novella!

However…..
About 55% in, everything took an insanely interesting turn. Gave me exactly what I needed. I finally got to meet the famous Zade after all these months of seeing and loving tons of BookTok videos about him! After Zade appears, the novella is full of suspense and action all the way to the very end. And that ending was so, so, so awesome and unforgettable!!

ENDING
That major twist had me screaming and covering my mouth! I freaking loved it and can’t stop thinking about it! My husband had to listen to me rant 90 mph about how exciting it was!

Zade
Ahhhhh!!!!
I am hooked. I need more of him. NOW! I know he is going to be unhinged, and I can’t wait.

“The hood has fallen back far enough in our fight that I can now see the entirety of his face. Electrifying mismatched eyes stare back at me, rimmed by long, thick lashes. One eye so dark, it looks black. And the other an ice blue so light, it looks white. Yin and yang. A thin, white raised scar cuts down through his left eye, giving his face a brutally masculine look. That face is mesmerizing. It’s dangerous.”

“He’s beautiful and terrifying all in the same breath, inhaling terror and exhaling a haunting beauty. It hurts to look at him. His face is scarred, his eyes are unsettling. A hard life lingers on the edges of his mouth. His beauty can only be seen on the face of the Devil. Tempting, but would eviscerate you in a matter of seconds.”

✦Book playlist (loved the inclusion of Melanie Martinez songs! It’s been a few years since I’ve listened to her music! Very fitting.)
✦Halloween-themed (Yeah, I know I’m a rebel reading this in the middle of March!)
✦Trigger Warnings
✦Reverse harem (well…kind of hahahahaha)
✦The smut is smutting (Let’s just say I learned a few things were possible. Doo doo doo…)
✦BookTok recommendation!

Lastly, this meets one of my 2024 Monster Mash Challenges! Woo, woo!

still in love with my home girl sibby and can't wait until her next book comes out 🫶🏼

review oct. 14, 2023:
honestly, i started this book with not knowing what to expect. i knew i wanted to read the cat & mouse duet but this was recommended first, so i of course dove in.

this book caught my attention from the first page and i could not put it down. i had to finish it and see how it played.

sibby, ah, as much as her character is crazed, you feel so many emotions for her between what she is currently doing and everything she endured through the years. all around, a great character and i cannot wait for her second book to come.

please please please read the trigger warnings though before reading.

I....I have no words for this story!!!

Satan's Affair is a travling haunted house with mazes, foods, rides (which i love) and has Sibels haunted house which where she hides in the walls picking and choosing evil people to get rid of, with her Henchmen they get the job done.. and there isn't one oh no she has few men.

Now this book shall fuck you up because it did for me it also gave me house of 1000 corpse vibes which I love and wish this was a movie because it was sooo good. Do I have a fave henchmen yes I do and it's Mortis 🥰🥰🥰 as they move town to town Sibby picks the worse peoples and gets rid of them. And who doesn't love a strong passionate "crazy" killer lol.

And when you get closer to the end you start going WTF HAPPENED!!!!

i was compelled to read this book solely based on the author's recommendation as a prequel to her series, cat and mouse.

however, what i encountered within its pages was an unreasonable display of gore, psychopathic characters, and an unexpected twist that unfairly stigmatizes individuals with mental illness.

am i going to read haunting adeline? you can bet on it. but will i suggest this to my friends and give them nightmares? no way. i'm not that heartless.
