From the bench at Manhattan Supreme, she has seen the most hardened killers pass through her courtroom. But there’s something about this trial―a defendant charged with the murder of a pregnant woman―that affects her as no other case ever has. Her chaotic, stressful home life only adds to her mounting feelings of panic and fear. She’s also harboring a secret that if exposed could have far-reaching ramifications both personally and professionally. And now, unbeknownst to Alice, her daughter has begun a search for her biological father.  As the trial progresses, Alice’s life starts to unravel. Nightmares she suffered as a girl return with a vengeance. Phantom sightings torment her. Is she being paranoid? Or are the specters real? Almost at the breaking point, she begins to doubt her own sanity. Then she makes a shocking discovery that sends her on a collision course with her past and a terror-filled night in the woods in Upstate New York. Confronted with the unspeakable, she must face a decades-buried truth as she fights for her survival against a cunning adversary that forces her to question everything she ever believed about herself . . . and tests her limits as a woman, a judge, and a mother. Narrated from the perspectives of three women―Alice, her daughter, and Alice’s girlhood friend― First Victim is a suspenseful tale of guilt, justice, and long-awaited retribution.

The People v. William Henry Young. The charge is 1st degree murder of a pregnant woman with the honourable Alice D McKerrity presiding who runs a tight court.

This is a novel about secrets and the choices we make, it’s about guilt, revenge and atonement as Alice’s past and present collide in the most horrifying of ways. It’s told from three points of view, by Alice, her daughter Alexis and Alice childhood friend Connie which works and flows very well.

Gosh, this is one powerful novel from the talented Debbie Babbitt as you witness the immense pressure on Alice both at home and in the courtroom with her emotional turmoil being palpable. You witness her carefully constructed world imploding as she’s unravelling and is a mess. You feel the fact that she is utterly spooked, at times she is terrified as her fears grow in intensity to panic, paranoia and claustrophobia and you sense the growing dread. This part is exceptionally well written as are the courtroom scenes which are riveting. You can feel Young‘s presence and he makes your flesh crawl. You have no idea what game he is playing except you know that he’s playing one. Alexis’s part in the drama is well done as is Connie's and you appreciate a huge can of worms has been opened. The author very effectively uses places and weather conditions to create tension and escalate the unfolding events. It’s gripping, intense and fast paced though times inevitably it’s an uneasy and uncomfortable read.

There are however a couple of reservations that prevent the awarding of the full five stars. The ending is a bit confusing as it has memories that fuse with recent events and you sort of have to pick your way through it although I totally get what the author is trying to achieve. There is one chapter from the perspective of Alice‘s husband Charles which seems a bit odd and out of place .

Overall though this is a compelling and powerful book.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Penzler Publishing, Scarlet for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

TRIGGER WARNING rape, abuse, crimes against women in general

Writing: 4.5/5 | Plot 3.5/5 | Ending: nah bruv 2/5

THE PLOT

Alice is the presiding judge on a rape/murder case dealing with a lot of issues at home. Throughout the case, she starts experiencing painful flashbacks and paranoia. Why? Read it and find out!!

MY OPINION

Yes, my plot summary was very short, but I didn't want to give to much away. Ok, some quick facts:

- This would make a BOMBBBBBBB movie. Netflix, where ya at? I can literally see it now.

- Idk if it was intentional, but the first mentions of Charles made it sound like he was a baby but he was actually some 60+ yr old dude with Alzheimer's. I LOVED LOVED LOVED his POV. I've never read a POV from a character with Alzheimer's. It was cool to get inside his brain (even if it's not accurate... it was still interesting). Some of my fave excerpts from his POV:

"He's worried about her. Afraid she's going down the slippery slope. Slope? He sees himself skiing down the mountain, the sun reflecting off the snow blinding him. Not a ski slope, you idiot!"

"Then he hands him the newspaper. Charles nods as he takes it from him... He likes the neat, orderly way the black symbols march across the white page. When he has finished counting them, he turns to the next page."

A great example of SHOWING mans is confused due to his Alzheimer's instead of TELLING us, ie: "Charles was confused because his brain was mush mush due to a condition called Alzheimer's, which is the most common form of dementia according to the CDC."

- The last couple of chapters were too repetitive. The same flashback again and again and again. Could've been much shorter. Ending was OD... too Criminal Minds-y. Could've done without the whole Teddy plot line as well TBH.

- The writing quality was great. Unique. Short sentences. Quick chapters. No useless dialogue.

- The ARC formatting was WHACK. I'm confused how the formatting is always so off, when the publishers know this will be mostly picked up on Kindle??? Wagwan?

- There were some weird discrepancies throughout where the math didn't quite math: Angel was a pregnant stripper? How far along? Was she showing? huh? How did the serial rapist get in a relationship with the court guard lady? Why did he let that one chick live and what was her purpose? Who was "stalking" Alice, or did she make that up?

- Alice's 29-year-old daughter Alexis was annoying. She literally acted like she was 16. I wish the author had just either made her 22 OR more mature. But the fact she was the same age as me living in her parents house with her room covered in posters talking about "she didn't have to read about that to know it's not bad for the baby" (in reference to not drinking while pregnant) c'mon girl......

- I repeat: THIS WOULD MAKE A FIRE FLAME MOVIE.

I'm surprised at the low ratings tbh... This was head and shoulders above other "novels" raking in 4/5 star reviews.

Have my standards lowered? Or am I escaping my slump?????

PROS AND CONS

Pros: well written, well paced, loved Charles' POV, great psychological insights, learned some new stuff about being a judge

Cons: Felt some characters were unnecessary and contrived, like Connie, Teddy, the weird waitress girl (WTF was that about????) the potential stalker (real or fake? idk), the Sheriff, etc. Ending was doing entirely too much. A little repetitive at the end.

This was quite a dark and grim story. Alice D. McKerrity has worked hard to get somewhere after having a child at 17 and dropping out of school. She finished her schooling at 20, went to law school and is now a respected judge. On the down side her 29 year old daughter, Alexis, is moody and secretive and her older husband (not Alexis’s father) is suffering from the increasing ravages of dementia.

Alice is to preside over a murder case, William Henry Young is accused of brutally raping and torturing and killing a young pregnant woman. A repugnant crime. He’s already on his second lawyer. When that lawyer quits he elects to represent himself. From the start of the trial Alice has been nervy and anxious and having weird flashbacks to a terrible event from her past. You may be able to guess where this is going but, sheesh, it’s a dark, unnerving read.

I don’t want to say any more but Alice must soon face her demons and fight for her life. It was hard to read this as the bad guy was pure evil. The characters felt so real, which was quite discomforting. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. The pace was relentless and there were no flat spots. I haven’t read anything from this author before but I was impressed with the writing of this book, it kept my nerves as taut as a bowstring! Many thanks to Netgalley and Penzler Publishers for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Thank you so much to Debbie Babitt and Scarlet Suspense for my copy of First Victim. The story is a legal thriller about Alice, a judge who has had a lot of experience with violence. When a murder of a pregnant woman comes into her court, it affects her more that she thought it would. As the trial progresses, Alice’s life starts to unravel. Nightmares she suffered as a girl return wand she starts to get paranoid. When she makes a shocking discovery, she has to decide if she wants to unearth the past to protect her family's future.

Thoughts: This book was full of secrets and lies and was about the choices we make. There were three main perspectives that surround the themes of anxiety and panic. It was a well written story and there are tons of trigger warnings so be aware of that. I love books set in a courtroom and can see this being a tv show or movie. The ending was a let down however, and it felt like a lot was jammed into the ending. It was also difficult to follow at times because of all of the flashbacks. 3-stars

"First Victim" is a thrilling legal novel that begins in the courtroom and ends as a twisted psychological crime thriller. The story is narrated from the perspectives of three women: Alice, her daughter, and Alice's childhood friend. It is a spellbinding tale of guilt, justice, and long-awaited vengeance.

The story follows a judge who presides over a gruesome trial that becomes personal. When she loses faith in the justice system and decides to take the law into her own hands, the plot thickens, and tension builds, making it an incredibly captivating read. Although the book is a quick and easy read, it does contain some dark and disturbing adult content. It is fast-paced, gripping, and beautifully written. The characters are well-developed, and the storyline is full of mystery and anticipation.

Thank you to Penzler Publishers - Scarlet for providing a copy of this book through NetGalley. As always, all opinions are my own and left voluntarily.

This was a gripping legal thriller from start to finish, as it follows a woman named Alice, a judge with a violent past.

As the trial for the murder of a pregnant woman begins, Alice is brought back to her chilling past, making her paranoid that the monsters in her nightmares are once again lurking.

While I’m not the biggest courtroom drama/thriller fan, I actually flew through this one and really enjoyed it!

Alice McKerrity is a judge at Manhattan Supreme. She has seen the worst or the worst pass through her courtroom, however her current case has her very shaken up. The defendant has been charged with murdering a pregnant woman. Alice starts to really suffer with nightmares and visions and she is questioning her own sanity. To make it even worse, she finds out that her daughter has been searching for her biological father in secret. Alll of this is bringing some terrible events from the past back to the present for Alice. Will she be able to keep her secrets from the past?

I really enjoyed FIRST VICTIM by Debbie Babitt. I am always interested in a courtroom setting novel. I also enjoyed the fast pace and short chapters, this helped keep my interest from beginning to end. I saw that Debbie Babitt is the daughter of a former federal judge, this makes perfect sense because her writing demonstrates her deep knowledge about courtroom proceedings. Try out FIRST VICTIM if you like court case books, you will love it!

As the Honorable Judge Alice D. McKerrit, she hears some of the worst crimes pass through her courtroom.
She is dealing with a lot personally as her daughter who has graduated college, has lost her way and Alice’s husband is dealing with a life altering disease. It is hard keeping it all together, and her stress level is bringing back painful memories from her past.
On trial is a ruthless man who is convicted of brutal rape and murder, and Alice feels like somehow she is connected with the defendant, who has decided to be defend himself. The banter between them is frightening. Alice begins to have nightmares, as the case runs too close to home.
I love the book is narrated by three women. Alice, her daughter and Alice’s childhood friend Connie, and they are all connected with a tragic event. This trial has Alice questioning her decisions about everything. Her daughter is acting out. Alice’s daughter has never known her biological dad and is searching for answers, and she knows her mother is not being forthcoming. A twist of fate brings them all together.
This book is due out June 14, 2022. Thank you NetGalley, Scarlet publishing and Debbie Babitt for this advanced copy. Cannot wait to read more by this author.

Debbie Babitt follows up her outstanding debut novel, SAVING GRACE, with the equally impressive FIRST VICTIM.

Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Alice D. McKerrity is yearning for a bit of a break from her chaotic personal life. Her much older husband, Charles, is a former judge who has been stricken with early onset Alzheimer’s, and everything at home seems to be upside down. Her daughter, Alexis, is also being more difficult than usual, making work her only respite.

However, even that is about to change. Alice is preparing for her next case, but once she lays eyes on the defendant as he enters the courtroom, all of the nightmares that have been troubling her for the past 30 years come storming back in one giant wave.

William Henry Young is a hulking figure who appears to be completely in control. He is accused of torturing and killing a pregnant prostitute inside the car where he picked her up, which made for a violent and bloody death. While the jury is being selected and the trial is getting ready to start, the defense attorney claims that he is unable to represent his client. Various reasons are given, and while he and Alice argue back and forth, Young states that he will act as his own lawyer.

Alice quickly realizes that while Angel may have been his last victim, she is the only one in the courthouse who knows that she was his first victim. The court proceedings are tense and well-written, but readers will be hanging on every word to see how Alice responds to what is going on and wondering if Young has made the connection between them as well. Alice reaches her breaking point when she catches Young staring at Alexis as if he were lining up his next victim. This leads to a major shift in the narrative.

Debbie Babitt has plenty of twists and surprises up her sleeve in the final third of the book, which takes place deep in the woods of upstate New York. These unforgettable scenes will involve not only Alice and Young, but also Connie, Alice’s oldest friend from high school, and Alexis, who has reached out to Connie to learn what she can about her mother’s secret past. The creepy agenda that Young has in store for Alice will keep frightened readers up all night.

FIRST VICTIM is full of suspense and chills, but most of all, it is a fine character study that makes for a top-notch psychological/legal thriller.

trigger warnings for this book include rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, abuse, and mentions of domestic violence.

plot!
When Judge Alice McKerrity’s newest criminal trial begins, elements of the case begin to not only remind her of her past, but deeply affect many areas of her life. With an unwell husband and a daughter, Alexis, who is intent on discovering who her biological father is, the pressure of both Alice’s home and work life become almost unbearable. As the trial continues to progress and intensify, Alice must face her past in an effort to protect her and her family’s future.

i don’t usually read suspense and thriller novels but seeing that this was set in a courtroom, i was instantly attracted to it.

this was a brilliant book. with such ease, i can imagine this being adapted into a movie or tv miniseries. it just has that type of plot, setting, and characters.

i liked that this book was split into three different POVs; Alice, Alexis, and Connie. however, there was like one random chapter that was from Charles’ perspective which just came out of nowhere??

the plot twists in this book were also extremely interesting. i felt like the last 15% of the novel, however, was very dragged out and the constant shift between teenage memories, present moment, and memories from the previous weeks became slightly confusing.

overall, a really enjoyable read. thank you to NetGalley & W. W. Norton & Company for giving me an ARC of this book!

The premise to this book was right up my street. A legal, courtroom based drama with a thrilling backstory.

Judge Alice McKerrity is presiding over a murder trial where the defendant is accused of the brutal rape and murder of a young woman, pregnant at the time.

Whilst presiding over the trial, Alice's personal life is falling apart and she starts to slowly unravel. It is clear that a past trauma is having a significant impact upon her life. Without spoilers I can't say much more other than read this book if you like thrilling legal, courtroom based dramas.

The book is told in multiple perspectives as well as different time periods which I know some people struggle with however that is a story telling mechanism which I really enjoy.

Ever since author Debbie Babitt made her debut in 2021 with the impressive SAVING GRACE I have been waiting to see what she was going to do next. Thankfully, it was not an exceptionally long wait as in 2022 she has released her follow-up novel entitled FIRST VICTIM and it looks to be another hit. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Alice D. McKerrity was looking to get a little bit of a break from her chaotic home life. Her much older husband, also a former judge, Charles, has been stricken with early onset Alzheimer’s disease and everything at home seems to be upside down. Her daughter, Alexis, is also being more difficult than usual making work Alice’s only respite.

She gives her coffee order to her trusty court attorney, Shavonne, and prepares to face her next case. However, once Alice sees the face of the defendant as he enters the courthouse all of the nightmares that have been troubling her for the past thirty years come storming back in one giant wave. William Henry Young is a hulking figure who appears to be completely in control. He is accused of torturing and then killing a pregnant prostitute inside the car where he picked up her up --- a very violent and bloody death.

While the jury is being selected and the trial is getting ready to start, the defense attorney Mr. Lazlow makes the claim to the court that he feels he is unable to represent this client. Various reasons are given and while the attorney and Alice argue back and forth, the defendant, William Henry Young, states that he doesn’t want Lazlow and will represent himself. After some consideration, Alice and the court decide to allow this and the case begins with Young defending himself.

This brings things back to the impact on Alice. It’s not Young’s demeanor or the heinous extent of the crime he is accused of that has set her off. It is the fact that the moment she set eyes on him she realized that while Angel Diallo may have been his last victim, she is the only one in the courthouse who knows that she was his first victim. The court proceedings are tense and well-written, but the reader will be hanging on every word waiting to see how Alice responds to what is going on and wondering if Young has made the connection between them as well. For Alice, the breaking point is when he catches Young staring at her daughter Alexis at the end of proceedings one day as if he were lining up his next victim. It is here where things take a big shift in the narrative as well.

Alice receives a note that she assumes is from one of the jurors but ends being from Young and it clearly indicates that he has made the connection. She calls him into her chambers with a prison guard but things take a violent turn and Young ends up overtaking the guard, arming himself, and kidnapping Alice while escaping from the courthouse in a waiting vehicle. The destination was pre-ordained --- the small town of Lowood in upstate New York where the two had their first infamous meeting decades earlier.

What Debbie Babitt has in store for readers in the final third of this novel is a series of twists and surprises set deep in the woods of Lowood and will involve not only Alice and her deadly captor William Henry Young, but also her oldest friend from High School Connie and her daughter Alexis who has been reaching out to Connie to try and discover what she can about her mother’s secret past. The creepy agenda that Young has in mind for Alice will definitely keep readers up all night reading and battling off nightmares as a result of the warped and twisted things this man has done. FIRST VICTIM is a novel full of suspense and chills, but most of all is a fine character study that takes the legal thriller and blends it nicely with the psychological thriller genre.

Thank you to Scarlet Suspense for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

First Victim reminded me a lot of a Karin Slaughter book, which is about the highest praise I can give a thriller. It had the grisly, twisted scenes I love, and the plot took a handful of unexpected turns. Things aren’t as they seem in this story, starting with the very first scene. This book is full of lies, deception, past trauma, and revenge.

Alice is such an interesting character. Her home life isn’t easy. She’s hiding her husband’s early-onset Alzheimers from the world, and she has a 29-year-old daughter living at home who acts more like a 16-year-old. She has some pretty heavy trauma from her past that she’s never confronted, and she has a very high-stress job that needs her constant full attention. Alice’s POV was by far my favorite. Connie’s provided some important backstory, but I wasn’t a fan of Alexis at all.

I’m such a fan of Debbie Babitt’s prose. First Victim was very well-written, with short chapters that flowed nicely and at a good pace. The book was thrilling from the start–I love a courtroom setting and was eager to hear about Young’s case, and was even more hooked once things took a turn for the worse for Alice.

Make sure you’re paying attention when you get to the end: I needed to re-read a few sections to make sure I was understanding how the threads came together. A certain flashback of Alice’s is repeated a few times, with more information at each pass. At some points it was hard to tell which was actually happening, but I thought that was a great way of illustrating Alice’s confusion.

There were a couple of questions that were left unanswered for me at the very end, but overall the story was enjoyable and engaging.

This is my first novel by Debbie Babitt and I want to thank @scarletsuspense for my advance copy!
This novel was full of secrets, lies and life choices. I really enjoyed the concise writing, unique, short sentences and my favorite (Yay) short chapters. It really helped the flow of the story and made it go by quickly. There are three POVs in the story, which also helped with the suspense. I don’t know why, but I really could see this being a TV miniseries (Hello Netflix?!) I could also really feel the anxiety coming off the pages. It was tense and panic inducing. The premise was unique if a bit farfetched. I mean, what are the odds? I don’t want to give too much away but…..

My only issue with this one was the ending. It felt like the beginning of the novel was slower moving and the end just wrapped everything up super-fast. I also did not like all the flashbacks. It was confusing as it flipped back and forth frequently. I also could not stand Alexis. She was a 29-year-old acting like a 17 year old. Annoying! These are all minor issues though and I felt this was enjoyable all around.

This intense legal thriller was a 5-star read for me! Alice was such a great character. She’s dealing with a ton of stress at home and in the courtroom with a high-profile case. Her home life seems to be crumbling with her husband’s Alzheimer’s slowly taking a turn for the worse, and her daughter being lost and frustrated with her own personal life. I truly felt for Alice and really wanted to know what crazy past she was hiding. I enjoyed all the twists in this book—most I didn’t see coming! I’m a sucker for courtroom drama, so this book was hard for me to put down!
I also enjoyed the multiple POVs: Alice, her childhood friend, her daughter, and her husband, Charles.

Highly recommend this thriller!

This is my first exposure to this author and it definitely did not disappoint! This is a well-written, suspenseful, complex, edge-of-your-seat thriller that will leave you breathless at times in anticipation of the next twist in the plot of which there are many. Her characters are well-developed though not necessarily likeable. None of them are whom they appear to be. This provocative, somewhat dark and twisted story grabs you from the first page and keeps you guessing until the very end where the author inserts a deliciously wicked twist.

OMG! What a ride! I stayed up late reading it and waved my poor husband away when he wanted my attention. I grabbed the book to finish it first thing the next morning. (By then, he knew to leave me alone.)

I had no idea what was going to happen. Every time I guessed, I was wrong. I thought there was a plot hole, but the hole turned out to be in my head, not in the book.

Along with the thriller aspects, "First Victim" is an accurate and moving portrayal of love, marriage, parenting, female friendship, and all the sacrifices they entail...as well as their rewards.

Read it! Read it!

The story intrigued me with its premise. I liked how Alice was etched with her guilt, her fears, insomnia and nightmares. She was a woman possessed by her past. Added to her characterization was a husband with Alzheimer's and a daughter who had own devils to face.

The courtroom scenes that Alice faced and the way they pulled into her past were great. So were the suspense in the plot line and the thrill it elucidated

The writing was a bit staccato. The last few chapters were rushed. I liked some of the mystery in this story, but the subplots at the end didn't fall into place naturally. Some things made no sense.
The plot line veered into the realms of unbelievable as the story came to its conclusion. My interest too dipped in the book.

For a debut, it was great. The atmosphere of claustrophobia and fear had all shades of darkness and was well written. The subplots could have been much better linked. Overall, a good read.

I just finished this book in a less than 24 hour period. So if you wanna take that as an indication of how good the book was. It was good the whole way through.

I enjoyed the characters and the way the story was laid out.

I liked the flashbacks/time jumps. They were really easy to follow.

I liked how it ended too. I definitely recommend this one if you’re looking for a quick legal thriller.

There isn't much that makes me happier than getting so lost in a book that everything else fades away. The short chapters, the different viewpoints, the possibility of an unreliable narrator combine to draw the reader in and not let go till the ending that satisfies that consuming need to know. Brilliant.

I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

A great story line with interesting characters. 4/5 stars for me because the ending was given away too soon and I felt the ending dragged after the reveal. Good for readers who enjoy suspense, law, and stalking.

Something is very wrong with Alice McKerrity. She is a judge and is quite used to seeing the worst side of people. But as she starts to preside over William Henry Young's case, it is apparent that even though this requires her full attention, her mind is elsewhere.
You might think that it is because her home life is so stressful, and you might be right. Her husband Charles is fading away, suffering from a disease that is slowly but surely taking away the man she loves. Her daughter Alexis has also changed quite a bit. Alice can hardly recognize her, as she has lost interest in things she loved and just seems to be coasting through life. Both of these issues are causing her concern, but it is the nightmares that invade her sleep that is becoming harder and harder to ignore.
Alice has been living with a traumatic event for many years, seeming to have successfully left it in the past. But there is something about the defendant and this trial that is making her paranoid and fearful. Two more things to add to her growing list of concerns.
Alexis is hiding a secret that will change her life forever. She has become curious about her mother's past and the identity of her birth father. She has no idea that the town of Lowood where her mother grew up holds devastating secrets. A simple search to find out something, anything about her father will end with more pain than she ever could have imagined.
Now comes the point when I realize that everything, I want to say would put me squarely in spoiler territory. What I can say is that I went back and forth trying to decide if Alice was an unreliable narrator, someone with just too much on her plate, or a woman who has been through so much, and it isn't over yet. The multiple perspectives and timelines worked well together, and the more I read, the more I was pulled into this twisted tale. Bonus points for characters I loved and one's that I loved to hate.

An intriguing read about a judge who comes face to face with her own nightmare in her courtroom. It’s a fast read with a good plot. The ending drags on a bit, but overall a legal thriller that resonates with contemporary topics.
Thanks to Scarlet and Edelweiss for the early read.
