Mapmakers #2

Mapmakers and the Enchanted Mountain

Rate this book
After saving the Valley from the Night Coats, is the newest Mapmaker ready to take the next step and save the rest of the world?

Being a Mapmaker is just as adventurous and magical as Alidade thought it would be. With the help of Lewis and Blue, they’re ready to restore magic to the rest of the world outside the Valley and find out what happened to the Memris, the guardians that disappeared when the Night Coats took over.

When the trio comes across Cado, a young boy who brings them to his hidden Mountain village, they soon learn that not everyone is as happy to meet a Mapmaker or a Memri as they thought they would be. Things go from bad to worse when the Night Coats show up nearby, and Alidade realizes she is running out of time.

Alidade is determined to prove her worth as a Mapmaker and bring balance to the Mountain . . . but at what price?

I’m still not convinced that there’s enough world building and background information for this series. It’s not bad, but I think that it’s surface level to the extent that you have to be willing to stick with the series to figure out exactly how this world got to this point. The mapmaking is fun and interesting, but I want to know what happened to all the mapmakers and why these areas of the world are so separated. The artwork is great and I really like the feel of the mountain elements and the community that was represented. Overall, a solid read but it could better with more reveals and more expansive world development.

This was super cute! Yes I read the second one first but it still makes sense - would definitely continue this one
Gives me big ATLA vibes and now I want to go and rewatch it all again 🥰

I LOVED this one! What a strong second chapter!! I loved that it relies on the importance of being a native to truly understand the heart of the area, despite the intentions of the outsider. There's really a lot of heart in this one.

I also thought there was great direction in this one (like, the cinematography and pacing?). I enjoyed this one even more than the first and I'm EXCITED to read the next one when it comes out!!!

Again a cute continuation of the middle grade dystopia. This time it included metaphor of how things can’t survive forever without the good&bad, dark&light.

In this second installment of the Mapmakers series, we get a new adventure for Adelaide, Lewis, and Blue as they travel into the mountains to expand their map. They meet Cado, a resident of the mountain, who takes them to the secret community hidden within the mountain. Cado dreams of being a mapmaker too, and of finding a way to save his people from a mysterious illness that is spreading in his community. Together the three children and Blue search for answers and a way to bring the mountain's Memri back. However, the troubling appearance of a dark Flicker hints that the Night Coats may be hiding more than anyone could have guessed. Readers will be left with much anticipation for the third installment. Gorgeous art and a riveting story make this middle grade graphic novel an enchanting read indeed.

WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED!? It felt like it was the shortest book in the whole dang world and people in a cave... I am literally shocked that there is a HORIBLLE Ending! THE FIRST BOOK WAS SO MUCH BETTER than this one it was literally just a mapmaker and her friend with a BIRD in a cave coming with a friend and escaping because some people found them and then OH NO they make up with the cave people and find a cure for a sickness that is going on in the cave (I do not want to spoil the rest.) But, it is really rare for me to rate a book 2 stars but I am going to for this book which I did not like at all. (I am very sorry to the author but this is my honest opinion!)

I liked this, but I was not necessarily wowed. I like the setting of this, with the mountain people. The Night Coats were barely a presence in this, teased only a few times throughout. (Third installment coming this year I think.) I appreciated that the main character learned it’s important for someone who is a part of the mountain’s community to represent their own story.

The art is strong, and the characters are cute, but the storytelling is not my favorite and overall I just feel underwhelmed by the series so far. BUT, I can definitely imagine middle grade readers being drawn to this for the illustrations, maps, and whimsy.

Alidade, the newly-minted mapmaker and her friend Lewis, set off with the magical memri Blue to complete the map of the enchanted mountain region. There they meet Cado who is trying his hand at mapmaking to find the memri of the mountain and to cure the sickness that has left many mountain people sick. When they inadvertently bring a monster to life, they have to figure out how to complete their map properly to bring the mountain memri back. This clever graphic novel is the second in a series and sets up what will be a highly-anticipated third volume.

The continuation of Alidade, Lewis, and Blue's journey to revive the Memris and advance mapmaking. If you haven't read the first book, you won't understand much of what's going on.
The story continues to advance! It truly makes the reader look forward to what's going to happen next. New characters and setting were super fun and memorable.
Amanda Castillo's art is always so beautiful and mesmerizing. I love the Pinoy representation! I didn't realize until this book she was Pinoy.
I can't wait to read the next installment:)

This was a phenomenal follow up to the first book in the series! We pick up exactly where we left off with our three adventurers. Alidade, Lewis, and Blue are on the hunt for the next Mapmaker Lodge so that they can free another of the Memri. What they stumble upon instead is Cado, a young boy that takes them to their hidden mountain village. No spoilers here but this was a really great graphic novel and I can't wait for the next volume!

I feel like I’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem with this series. It gives me Avatar the Last Airbender vibes. The fantasy world building is solid (something I am always skeptical of in graphic novels) and perfect for the intended audience. The characters are growing. The plot line is that classic good Vs. Evil but the evil thinks they’re doing the right thing.

I’m just overall very very impressed by this series and I am very excited for the third to be released next year!

I just really love this series because it keeps you interested while still ACTUALLY giving you answers. It doesn’t feel like all you’re doing is chasing new questions. I enjoy that.

I loved learning about the people of the mountain and a. SUPER intrigued to see what’s behind that door on the last page!

Love the illustrations! The story is definitely a unique one and I can’t wait to finish the rest of the books. I picked this up at a flea market and only realized when I took the book jacket off that it was book 2, but besides that I would recommend this graphic novel for any middle schooler but adults are sure to enjoy too.

Good continuation of the story. I really enjoyed learning about the Mountain culture and its differences from the Valley culture. I look forward to seeing how the Plains culture differs from the other two in the next installation.

I loved this and getting to see another part of a magical world. The art was amazing and I love how the Mountain people have found ways to survive without being detected by people who seek to rule over everyone and be destructive.

Highly recommend!

In the second book in the series Alidade and Lewis travel with Blue to the Enchanted Mountain to try to bring back their Memris. But, nothing goes to plan of course. Really enjoying this one.
