Readers' Most Anticipated October Romances

Posted by Sharon on September 25, 2023

Good news, romance readers: We’ve gathered below the month’s hottest and most popular new love stories. Or lust stories, at least.

Every month our team sorts through the new romance books and sees how early readers are responding. We use this information to curate a list of soon-to-be-beloved favorites. It’s easy, really. Some people love books. Some people fall in love. And some people love books about falling in love.

New in October: Elsie Silver continues her Chestnut Springs series with Hopeless. Hannah Grace spins a summer camp love story in Wildfire. And Kacen Callender chronicles a queer Hollywood romance with Stars in Your Eyes. Also on tap this month: desperate authors, horny revenants, and gelato recipes.

Add what catches your fancy to your Want to Read shelf and let us know what you're reading and recommending in the comments.

The latest in Hannah Grace’s popular Maple Hills series, Wildfire peeks in on college students Russ Callaghan and Aurora Roberts, whose perfectly satisfactory one-night stand gets complicated when they’re both hired at the same summer camp. The camp’s “no staff fraternizing” rule would seem to be an issue, but college kids have been ignoring that rule for generations. Along with life and liberty, the pursuit of camp counselor romance is one of the inalienable rights of American life.

Romance author Iris Kelly is managing just fine with her no-dating policy. Except for one problem: Iris has a deadline coming up, and she’s out of ideas. So when her latest hookup asks Iris to pretend to be her girlfriend, Iris figures she’s got her new plotline. Also in the mix: a queer retelling of Shakespeare’s immortal comedy, Much Ado About Nothing. The new romantic comedy from author Ashley Herring Blake follows the fun as a transactional romance becomes something else entirely.

Veteran romance author Ana Huang is back on shelves this month with King of Greed, the story of alpha Wall Street honcho Dominic Davenport. Ambitious, ruthless and obscenely rich, Dominic has acquired everything he’s ever set his sights on – including his trophy wife Alessandra. Alas, the estimable Mrs. Davenport is tired of always coming in second place behind Dominic’s work. She’s ready to leave the only man she’s ever loved. But she’s not ready for what happens next.

Author Liz Tomforde's newest book continues her popular Windy City series of sports romances, this time playing in the major leagues of baseball. Starting pitcher and single dad Kai Rhodes has never found a nanny who could live up to his strict standards, but when his coach's daughter ends up in the role, he'll have to figure out a way to co-exist with the one person he can't fire. Spoiler alert: they'll probably round some bases together.

In the new standalone rom-com from genre ace Tessa Bailey, the children of two retired rock stars must get their feuding moms back onstage for a Christmas Eve reunion concert. Melody Gallard and Beat Dawkins met back when they were teenagers, when their moms’ band Steel Birds was still a thing. That initial spark flares into a wildfire as they try to wrangle reluctant musicians, brawling Santas, and a 24-7 film crew. Love happens in the strangest places.

‘Tis the season for playful plotlines, it seems. The new romance from British author Alexis Hall pivots on a 1980s sitcom kind of story hook: Retail manager Sam Becker has been summoned to London, where he fully expects to get sacked by his surly boss Jonathan Forest. Sam’s bright idea? Fake amnesia. One bump on the head could mean a second chance at a first impression. Author Hall specializes in a “genrequeer” approach and has been known to dabble in speculative fiction, historical romance and urban fantasy.

Aspiring chef Iris has just moved to New York City, and it’s a lot more than she expected. Like, a lot a lot. Luckily, Iris has an ace up her sleeve – her family’s secret gelato recipe, which is straight-up magic. So imagine Iris’ surprise when she meets handsome Gio, whose family gelateria is in financial trouble. Fate works like that, sometimes. Also in the mix: an old secret, an unexpected connection, and an uncle in a coma. It’s hard to explain, actually.

Here’s a sticky wicket: Maggie Vine, dedicated mother and aspiring singer, once made that famous old vow to a friend: “If we’re still single at 35, we’ll get married.” Actually, Maggie made that vow twice. Now she’s turning 35 and, um, both guys have taken her up on the offer. Atlanta author Alison Rose Greenberg sorts out the rom-com awkwardness in her follow-up to last year’s Bad Luck Bridesmaid.

Young adult specialist Kacen Callender (Felix Ever After) turns to adult romance with their latest novel, an M/M love story about two troubled actors and one ill-advised fake dating scheme. When Hollywood bad boy Logan Gray publicly disses his up-and-coming costar Mattie Cole, the PR geniuses cook up a phony romance gambit. It really doesn’t work. Until it kind of does.

Book number three in her Flesh and Fire series – a prequel spinoff to her Blood and Ash series – A Fire in the Flesh is the latest in shadowy fantasy romance from prolific author Jennifer L. Armentrout. The story returns readers to Armentrout’s richly detailed universe of revenants and gods, consorts and assassins, and lethal court intrigue. There’s a love story in the middle of all this, and word is that the new book begins with a stunning betrayal.

For those keeping score at home, Hopeless is the fifth book in Elsie Silver’s popular Chestnut Springs series. (The previous titles: Flawless, Heartless, Powerless, and Reckless, in that order. See what’s she’s done there?) The latest chapter relates the percolating romance of a military hero and a shy bartender. Will their fake engagement scheme go the way of every fake engagement scheme in the history of the romance genre? Find out on October 13.

Iron Flame has a release date in November. This list is about October releases.

10 Things that never happened is a M/M romance novel, but it isn't much like RW&RB. The characters are older, and the tone is different! I thought it was very good, and not unlike Boyfriend Material also by Hall.
