It's been a while since I last read a middle grade book and picking up Hello, Universe after a heavy, dystopian read and mostly historical fiction over the past months felt refreshing. The plot may be simple and easy to follow but it is the diverse characters that really won my heart over. I love Valencia most of all because of her pure and sincere heart. The Filipino tales by Lola are also a delight to read.

A cute backyard adventure for kids. And, possibly, an introduction to literary classics such as Gulliver’s Travels. I love that even though the protagonists are the kids, the lead boy’s lola is prominent as a guiding figure whose stories propel motivations and spark imaginations.
