The entire book was heavy reading. You get dejected and heartbroken at every loss, in whatever form, but hope springs eternal, as the cliche goes. Up until that last chapter. Then the Epilogue. Then... that.

I always have a problem with Pulitzer Prize nominees and winners, they feel snobbish and a bit of a show off but not Colson Whitehead. You know when you are reading Latin American literature and the atmosphere feels humid and hot, same thing with Black literature. The atmosphere feels heavy, oppressive, it actually makes me feel nauseous. With "The Nickel Boys" that atmosphere is still there but double it and I feel that's what makes it work.
