Well, I think it pretty obvious that Conn Iggulden relished breathing life into this complicated creature called Dunstan. What a joy it is to read books that are so clearly a work of pride by the author. And he should be proud. This was a bloody good book. The best I have read of him so far… but of course, I have not yet read everything he has written.

This novel brings the distant past to life in the story of the tenth century monk, Dunstan. It’s told in Dunstan’s voice as his memories looking back on his life from old age.

A tall tale. Good historical fiction. But I prefer Uhtred of Bebbanburg and the Last Kingdom which hits on the same era of medieval English history. Still, Conn Iggulden does a good job of weaving fact and fiction as he follows the life of an Abbot. Kings and Queens and life and death. Good but not spectacular. This one was interesting historical wise and at times i wanted to scream at the Abbot to be nice to his brother.
