The characters were just so unlikeable, and the main character was an absolute nightmare. Throughout the first third of the book, it was just drilled into us how horrible this world was, and how special Sophia (mc) was for not conforming to society... And everything about it just felt so performative and unbelievable. The only redeeming quality was the f/f romance, but even that felt insta-lovey and hurried. I just didn't enjoy the experience of reading this....more

This was okay, in every sense of the word. I think Ali Hazelwood is a decent writer, but her characters are very cookie cutter, and the only saving grace is the academic setting. This is just not good enough. The characters are bland and boring (And he failed MASSIVELY in writing from a 13 year old girls perspective), the plot is unnecessarily convoluted, the gods blend together, the magic system is random and badly explained... And that's just the start.

I wasn't super impressed by this, and I think one of the reasons is because I went into it believing it was something it was not. It has been advertised as Dark Academia, but it's just another thriller with a twist ending, and it didn't work particularly well for me. Now, don't get me wrong, it was a good thriller, but it followed so many of the staples for the genre, it very quickly became very predictable. All in all it was a decent read, and it kept me entertained, but I wished so much more from it than it could deliver....more

Would not recommend unless one happens to be a die-hard fan of his work. The sources were questionable in and of themselves (view spoiler)[just because you happen to be related does not mean you know everything about that person (hide spoiler)]. Not happy with this, but would pick up another biography on his life, because he did lead an interesting one....more

The story itself was good, but it never really felt alive. The language was very clunky, and a lot of it read like the author just had a lot of semi-decent one-liners he strung together to make a paragraph. At some points it also became very clear that a man wrote this, just in terms of phrasing and how the characters acted around each other. It never became dynamic, which I guess is sort of the point of the novel, but I didn't enjoy that.
The plot was good. I enjoyed the many twists and turns, and the many, many red herrings. Everyone has another secret, which is always fun to read about. The plot also felt very realistic and not forced. It moved forward in good pace, and the diary entries from the past shed good light upon the current situation. I was always interested to read more. Not because I particularly cared about the characters, but because the mystery behind it was really good....more

The writing was good, and it was probably a good story from someone else's eyes, but it was not quite my style. I dont think adult contemporary fiction is quite my genre, and I read gossip girl when I was 14, I don't need to read it at 25. Also pretty much the only character I cared about was Rachel, but she wasn't the only POV character, which made a lot of chapters drag for me....more
