His description of women is uncomfortable to say the least, and his little rant about rape and prostitution being every woman's fantasy is incredibly harmful and disgusting. I don't care that it was written in the 70s - that doesn't excuse it. The affair took up way too much of the book. I can get behind that added bit of tension between characters, but there were so many unnecessary scenes. Why did he keep calling it a fish?? I understand that's what a shark is, but the word "shark" was used like maybe 15 times... in a book about a shark. Meanwhile, Benchley said the word "fish" like 8 times a page. With all the unnecessary content and details, why am I left completely confused as to how the shark died? My family members that read it are also all super confused. I can't tell you how the shark died in the shark book, but I can give you a very in-depth description of the wife's body and her fantasies. Tell me how that makes sense. I'm going to choose to forget that the movie Jaws is based on this book and never think about it again. ...more
