I didn't think the manuscript was a true story from the start, I thought it was a draft for her next book--the narrator repeats several times that the book series is written from the villain's POV. I find it quite believable that it was a writing exercise. (hide spoiler)]

Reading the part of the book about the elections was like going through that referendum again. Trust me, Tracey Mathias got it 100% right. The second half of the book it is more of a thriller than a dystopia; I'd say it's a YA dystopian thriller. (Power cuts occur from time to time and everyone is required to carry an ID). It gets really, really tense.
I'm a bit like Zara, so that tells you all you need to know about how much this book means to me and how grateful I am that it was written....more

But she could put out a decent gothic tale or a thriller equally well. I wish more people embraced this side of her too....more
