This one was labeled as a mystery/thriller read but the only mystery I've found so far is how to motivate myself to keep reading. The characters aren't particularly likable and the story hasn't really gone anywhere so this one just isn't my cup of tea but others do seem to enjoy it.

Claiming Mister Kemp is the fourth book in the Baleful Godmother series by Emily Larkin which also had a set of prequel novellas in the Fey DNF @ 39%
Claiming Mister Kemp is the fourth book in the Baleful Godmother series by Emily Larkin which also had a set of prequel novellas in the Fey Quartet series. I have read all of the previous books in both series and had really been enjoying the mix of fantasy, historical and romance up until book 3 of this series. In the third the main character crossed a line I wasn't comfortable with and now this book seems to be doing that over and over again so I have given up on finishing this one.
The book is a sort of crossover of book three highlighting a couple of characters that were in that story and their relationship. It starts with Tom coming back to find his friend grieving the death of his sister on the anniversary of her passing by becoming extremely drunk. Tom insists on helping Lucas to bed which includes undressing him and then ends up taking oral advantage of the incapacitated Lucas. Now since when does "No" not mean no??
There is also absolutely no build up for this couple just being thrust into this act which then follows with much of the same over the following chapters. Lucas is always no and Tom pushes and gets his way. Personally I just had enough of this and can't continue the read. There would have been better ways to show Lucas' fear of being caught and the men loving one another but those weren't present that I found. Perhaps the story goes on to become more since I know that the author can write a good story I'm just not a fan of the pushing someone into something they have said no to repeatedly.

Unfortunately Little Heaven turned out to be just not a book for me. This one gets off to an incredibly slow start that I had to force myself to continue reading. The actual plot described in the synopsis really doesn't even start until 25-30% into the book with the beginning of the story being sort of a mashed up type of character building that I kept struggling to make sense of.
By the time the actual plot that I thought I was getting with this read began it really was just unfortunately too little too late to pull me into this book. The pace did pick up a bit but there were still random thoughts/remembrances the characters have that continued to make it drag to me. Those that are fans of the gory and gruesome may be entertained though but with not being connected to the story or characters I felt I was just continuing to read only to gross myself out. There are some disturbing things already happening in the first half of this so I can only imagine how it would turn out but after a couple of days of picking it up and putting it down I think it's time to move on for me.

Unfortunately Sleep Sister just wasn't for me. The story starts off with Beth as a child with a horrific thing happening to her but quickly jumps ahead a few years to her father leaving then again when she's old enough to leave home. After four more years Beth returns and finds she shares her secret with her younger sister that she had left behind. But instead of the story sticking there for any length it jumps yet again another twenty six years I believe it was. So in the matter of the first third of the book we had jumped a good forty or more years. With so many characters and situations thrown in my head was spinning and I almost felt I needed to start taking notes.
Now, not only had the story jumped so far so quickly without spending much time on any details or character building but once we got so far ahead it starts to add in flashbacks along with what is happening in the current. With the dark subject matter at hand with this book I really wanted to care about these characters but I just didn't with so much jumping around. There were a lot of secondary characters I really didn't know at all but the main characters really didn't stand out much better while trying to keep up with where, when and with who everything was taking place.
Overall, just not one that I enjoyed, after several days of putting it to the side I decided not to finish, I'm sure others will enjoy it but was just not a fan of the execution of the story.

The concept of this book intrigued me when I first saw it, a thriller told from the different perspectives of some of those involved in the case but I found myself extremely bored reading this and just could not get into the story at all. There's nothing particularly bad about the writing to complain about and I'm sure some will love this but it just wasn't for me. I found myself waiting for more of the plot to progress and start making sense but felt like I was reading a lot of just filler information instead of anything relevant to the story. Just not for me unfortunately.

It is extremely rare for me to rate any book a 1 star and give up on it. For this book I made it up to 25% and I've decided it's just not my taste at all. The plot would probably have no problem pulling me in under normal circumstances but with this book I felt I needed a dictionary on hand. The very first paragraph in the book uses the word 'exophthalmic'. From there it just seems that the author had a dictionary and thesaurus both on hand and tried to use every uncommon word that could possibly be used. That just seriously breaks up the flow of reading for me even if I know the definitions or context I just wasn't enjoying what I was reading. Found it rather boring to sit through lengthy descriptive text trying to toss in large words.
By the end of the first 5 or 6 chapters I really couldn't say I cared what was happening at all any more or about any of the characters. I'm sure there would be some that would enjoy the story but have just found it's not for me and personally wouldn't recommend it.

I have to say I had hopes for this one. Great cover and something new to try. But I'm giving up on it for I won this book from Goodreads First Reads.
I have to say I had hopes for this one. Great cover and something new to try. But I'm giving up on it for now after 128 pages. The story seems to jump around everywhere without much progress or sense to it. I was a bit concerned with the several pages at the start listing a ton of characters and after reading as much as I have I seemed to be right in thinking there isn't much character development in the actual story. Jumps from one thing to another and gets too much to keep track of for my taste. I may return and give it another try someday and would revise my review if I change my mind but for now this is disappointment to me. ...more
