Ford to restart manufacturing in India but for global export
Ford has submitted a Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Government of Tamil Nadu stating that the American brand plans to utilise the facility for export-oriented manufacturing. Yes, only for global exports! Ford officials met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin a few days ago to discuss the possibility of reopening its Chennai-based manufacturing plant nearly 2 years after shutting operations.
"The move will see the facility re-purposed to focus on manufacturing for export to global markets," Ford said in a statement. Ford's switched Maramalai Nagar facility, located on the outskirts of Chennai, will continue to produce motor vehicles. Although Ford stated it would make an announcement later, specifics on the cars that will be produced are yet unknown.
The Government of Tamil Nadu too seemed very keen on this new proposal as MK Stalin took to X to say"Had a very engaging discussion with the team from Ford Motors! Explored the feasibility of renewing Ford's three-decade partnership with Tamil Nadu, to again make in Tamil Nadu for the world!"
Ford Business Solutions, continues its IT activities and employs around 12,000 people in Tamil Nadu. Kay Hart, President International Markets Group at Ford Motor Company also addressed the plans to generate 2,500-3,000 jobs over the next three years. Ford company exited India in 2021 but over the last couple of months has been hinting at a return as there have been multiple testing of the new Endeavour and Ranger in Chennai.
