In market research, it is crucial to conduct qualitative segmentation to identify growth opportunities and subsequently achieve PMF. I recommend conducting a comprehensive analysis to identify market segments and then categorize the potential customer in detail. Once this exercise is complete, the following will be quickly achieved: accurate calculation of TAM, SAM and SOM; construction of a go-to-market strategy; identification of clear indicators for both the founder and potential investors to understand the current level of PMF achievement.

Portfolio approach is the industry norm where the investment happens to a basket of companies. Degree of concentration needs to be higher for better success. Every investment decision has different risk profile and has to be assessed along with business context dealing with.

So many (a vast majority) of our best investments in early stage startups came from referrals, i.e., people in our network who knew and could vouch for the founders of these startups, and their ability to make it. Venture investing is a business where it's very important to constantly collect the right vintages; if you don't see the long-term trend, you can't do it. To understand trends, my main advice is to communicate more with founders and people 'in the trenches'. Don't miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in a product or industry, dig as deep as you can to understand the essence. Talk to as many experts as possible, without prioritizing anyone's opinion. At that time, it was still very much unknown with few practical applications. But by staying engaged, learning about its real-world applications, and seeing its potential beyond cryptocurrency, investors who educated themselves early on blockchain technology were able to spot opportunities in startups like Chainalysis and Kraken. In VC, the real failure isn't losing money—you only lose 1X. The bigger risk is missing out on an opportunity that could make 5-10X. Make bold, informed decisions, and focus on what could drive outsized returns.

When I have an investment decision to make, I like to review how I expect to react to the outcomes in different time periods--I can write that down to check my gut. How will I feel in a month? A year? Five years? Trying to live into the future, mentally, and project on many facets helps bring to the fore issues I want clarity about "right now."

In venture capital investing, the decision-making process cannot be based solely on quantitative metrics. Each opportunity is unique, with non-standard parameters and conditions. The key is to identify the most critical lines in your investment mandate that should not be crossed. The company can and most likely will differ from your ideal startup vision, that's fine, but it should not cross certain boundaries of the investment thesis.

One of my biggest learnings as a VC is to recognise that you're biased, and it's extremely important to be aware of those biases. Often, past experiences have shaped your view of how things are likely to pan out. Yet, the best startup founders by definition are those who see and do things differently. Hence, over-reliance on your past learnings (and by logical extension, biases) can often lead you to miss or reject the opportunity to back founders who will do things differently/ better.

There is nothing like a post-mortem, whether a deal/investment was successful or not, to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the decision process and the investment management that led to the current status (success/failure). Learning from past wins and errors help improve process and avoid future mistakes on a continuous basis.

There will be months when nothing excites you. You will think the deal flow is bad. It might be, but it also might be that you are burnt out. We VCs have thousands of yearly meetings it could be in the multiple thousands. This desensitizes you. This is why VCs look for very unique out of the box approaches and usually for new trends. There is also an economic reason, it's these megatrends that lead to huge outcomes but also because they are exposed to so many opportunities that you need something completely novel. If you lose some of the excitement, take a break seeing new deals, focus internally or in the portfolio and come back once you have regained the join of learning about the cool things entrepreneurs do.

Reflection is crucial. Take SoftBank’s Vision Fund, for instance. After the setbacks with WeWork et al., Masayoshi Son publicly reflected on what went wrong — acknowledging issues with due diligence and valuation strategies. This reflection led to changes in how the fund evaluated future investments. In my own experience, I’ve found that after-action reviews of investment outcomes are critical for honing future strategies. It’s about constantly iterating on your approach, adapting to new information, and not being afraid to pivot when the situation demands it. Cultivating a strategic mindset isn’t just about following rules; it’s about engaging with your market, network, learning, and reflection processes. That’s how you thrive in VC.

Contrarian investors believe that the market often overreacts to news, leading to mispriced assets. By investing in these overlooked opportunities, contrarians aim to capitalize on future shifts in market sentiment, ultimately realizing higher returns when the market corrects or changes its view.
