You've faced a setback in your hospitality career. How can you turn it into a stepping stone for growth?

Anticipate set-backs, best first step to deal with them and convert to set-forths to grow. This may sound like a pessimistic approach but aren’t Space scientists doing the same? Preparing for all kind of scenarios that can go wrong (& those that will go right) for a shuttle to lift off, enter space and return back to earth safely. So in some tasks, write down or mentally visualize all scenarios that can pose a ‘hindrance’ to success and paint a success come back across. After all, bad news always travels faster than good news. Make a bad situation work for you cause you had already visualized and prepped.

Setback in career is experienced by all. Accept it, because it is never permanent. 1. Stay calm - Take a break. Once emotionally settled, reflect back on the turn of events that eventually lead to the setback you experienced. Use some time to make an HONEST evaluation of what you have and what you don't - your strengths and weaknesses. 2. Return to the drawing board, update your resume and share with all relevant contacts & friends that you may have in the industry, if you are clear on your next move. 3. Till such time you get a breakthrough with a new opportunity, READ - books and stay updated, or do a course which is relevant with the industry and can be valued when you start over again.

Três pontos em minha opinião são fundamentais: Diagnosticar o motivador do fato para não sofrer ou se penalizar injustamente, ter a humildade de reconhecer suas fraquezas e deficiências que possam ter contribuído para o ocorrido e investir na melhoria desses pontos para conseguir compilar e melhorar, o que requer muita maturidade. Nessa análise, você vai descobrir seus pontos positivos que devem ser apresentados como diferencial e as oportunidades de melhoria E MELHORAR! Dá trabalho, causa algum desconforto, as vezes gera algum custo, mas é o que vai te fortalecer para a retomada.

I feel it's important to understand what your strengths are before you ask for feedback. I do know feedback is valuable. But you need to sort out what information (feedback) received is worth keeping and what can be omitted.

Giving and receiving feedback is never easy; it takes a lot of courage for a leader to offer feedback, whether it’s constructive or criticism. However, feedback is the only way to uncover what you may not know or to confront what you might be denying. For me, feedback is incredibly valuable as it helps you understand why a setback occurred in the first place. It serves as a crucial stepping stone to improvement and growth.

Updating your skillsets is something I believe is a constant, whether you have faced a setback or not. You need to keep updating your skills and stay shoulder-to-shoulder with the latest industry trends. That's when people will take you seriously and know that you are an industry expert.

This can be achieved through various means such as observing and learning from someone who is already where you want to be, reading relevant literature, and requesting cross-training opportunities. Externally, enrolling in professional training programs, attending workshops, and listening to TED Talks are excellent ways to update your skills. Keeping your skills current is crucial, regardless of whether you are facing a setback.

Network! Network! Network! always important to know people from not only your industry , but also supporting industries. Not only for personal benefits ( like looking out for a job ) , but to understand what challenges they face and how can you support them with your skills or introduce them to people you know. Always collaborate, don't compete.

It helps build relationships that can lead to new opportunities, knowledge, and support, ultimately contributing to success and fulfillment. In this era of Collaborative Intelligence, networking presents great opportunities to share ideas and thoughts, enhancing our individual lives and the hospitality industry. The size of your network can significantly determine your net worth.

First things first, I am sorry you had to go through whatever experience that led to the setback in your career. I have had this happen twice to me, the first time was when I had a mental breakdown, I was one of the lucky few to have worked with Taj, they helped identify my issues and I recovered. The second time was when I was bedridden was two years and hospitality was not an option for me anymore, I ran into marketing during my recovery, fell in love, reinvented myself while educating myself with new skills, and now, I'm better than where I was when I last left hospitality, and a lot happier. Resilience is important. If you fail, try again, and dont stop not till you are happy and satisfied and still keep at it.

Be Practical Hospitality sector by far teaches you so much that it is incomparable… you gain the most important skills needed to navigate through like grit, resilience, adaptability and presence of mind.
