“Knowing the problem is 50% of the solution” in 2022 my team hit a hard point where they ran out of options to solve a critical development problem and as easy as the problem may seem, I felt that it wasn’t the just the problem difficulty and everyone was very much frustrated so I decided to do the following: 1) We held a small workshop openly and asked everyone to stay saying what is the issue from their side 2) Several of the project lead team started doing 1:1 interviews with key Personel to understand more the core problem 3) several issues that weren’t known started rising up 4) we took a decision to delay some projects to later quarters and started doing more control on additional requests 5) we started doing more recognition

In my opinion product development is such a challenging team work so sometimes you loose a spark and human connection as well. Having team engagement activities are must in this situation to relive the stressful situation. Being a team leader you should ensure to have at least one fun activity in a month to make a zeal of team alive. Recent example I can recollect is to have 1 hour blocker for the team where treasure hunt game was played in the office with very innovative idea which was very wonderful. Finding unique way to engage the people is the key in make them more happy and productive.

In my experience, everyone has different motivators. For some it’s money, others the excitement of working on the product, others learning something new etc. So whatever is decided on will need to be determine based on knowledge of the team makeup and understanding how each person ticks. Enforcing a “mandatory fun” activity is not going to achieve the outcome if some team member dreads socializing or speaking in large groups. Communicate with your team and understand that everyone is there for a different reason.

Take them to a hike, buy them dinner. Do anything not work. Try to understand their pain points when they talk about the issues while not working. Trust me you’ll find the solutions.

TRIZ methods can help breakdown biases to solution paths and also help the team refocus on the base issues to solve. If not practiced internally then hire expert facilitators. That will work BESIDE your team.
