Traceability of cashew nuts

Traceability of cashew nuts

Before I started working at ChainPoint, I had no clue where the cashew nuts came from. A cashew nut grows on the “kasjoe tree”, what’s in the name….

The lower part of the fruit on the picture above is the cashew nut and the fruit itself is eatable, but with limited shelve life. A raw cashew nut is toxic, until is has been roasted or heat-treated.

The yield of cashew nuts per tree varies strongly, from half a kilogram till sometimes 30 kilogram per tree, per harvest. For companies that process or produce cashew nuts, it is vital to have insight in the quality and yield per area and to be able to trace the origin of the cashew nuts.

Via the software solutions of ChainPoint companies can get insight in their supply chains. Also for cashew nuts. From farmer till the end consumer. If you want to know more on the traceability of cashew nuts, read our case on our website: “ChainPoint provides cashew supply chain with transparency, traceability and efficiency”.

A raw cashew in its nutshell. Cashew nutshell oil is a natural resin with a yellowish sheen found in the honeycomb structure of the cashew nutshell, and is a by-product of processing cashew nuts. It is a raw material of multiple uses in developing drugs, antioxidants, fungicides, etc. It is used in tropical folk medicine and for anti-termite treatment of timber. Its composition varies depending on how it is processed. (Source: Wikipedia)
