A bandaged Donald Trump and his newly appointed running mate JD Vance speak at the Republican National Convention on July 16, days after an assassination attempt against the GOP’s presidential nominee. Vance, who turns 40 on August 2, is the first millennial nominated to a major party ticket. Once self-described as a “never-Trump guy,” the junior senator for Ohio began publicly backing the former president prior to his 2021 Senate run. Vance accepted the Republican vice-presidential nomination on July 17 in a speech that highlighted his blue-collar background and the economic hardships of the rural working class, particularly for those in major swing states like Michigan and Pennsylvania.
