Mysterious shortcut opened Task Manager focused on active window
Mysterious shortcut opened Task Manager focused on active window
Feature

I stumbled upon an unusual shortcut on Windows that directly opened Task Manager focused on the process of my active window. I'm certain it started with Shift + Windows Key + ... but can't recall the complete combination. There was something wrong with my keyboard (like some function key being active?), but I could see that when I pressed that specific combination of Opera browser, all the opens tabs and the designated resources were there. Has anyone else experienced this or knows the full shortcut?

Is there any bootkit, which allows to disable DSE without disabling PatchGuard
Is there any bootkit, which allows to disable DSE without disabling PatchGuard
General Question

Hello. I want to load my own windows kernel-mode driver without enabling testsigning or disabling PatchGuard, because both will cause problems with game anti-cheats. Is there any bootkit such as EfiGuard, which will disable Driver Singature Enforcement and not cause problem game anti-cheats?

If no, is there some literature about windows kernel structure/startup process, in particular, about DSE? I want to research it and find way to disable (maybe write my own bootkit) DSE without problems with anti-cheat software.

NTFS Partition Showing Unformatted After Bluescreen
NTFS Partition Showing Unformatted After Bluescreen
General Question

Hey All -

Have a Windows 10 box where I was attempting to enlarge the Recovery partition in order to successfully apply kb5034441. I shrank my NTFS partition by about 250mb then deleted the recovery partition. About 10 seconds later, bluescreen. I restarted and no boot. Come to find out, my NTFS partition is now listed as "Unformatted."

I tried a few tools including DMDE which after a full scan showed sporadic files in no apparent folder structure. I restored one of the text based conf files and when I opened it, it was random characters.

LOVE to be able to just set a flag or something to say that partition is NTFS and not unformatted, but seems that's not going to happen. If possible for me to just view files on it and copy / recover some that would be ideal.

Any suggestions with how to proceed? Thanks!

What will happen with a Win10 key if I will make a complete (clear) reinstall of Win10?
What will happen with a Win10 key if I will make a complete (clear) reinstall of Win10?
General Question

I have Windows 10 Home Edition (digital license key) and I want to make a complete reinstall of it. With a full erasing of local disks and merging them into one. But I wonder - what I should to do with a licensed key? What will happen with it?

Will the key lost forver or it will already activated on a fresh system (maybe after I'll enter into my account)?

Should I use ShowKey Plus to watch the key (and save it) and then use specific commands to erase the key from an old Windows. Then I will type the key again for an activation of reinstalled Win10. I did this when I transferred the key from a previous PC to a new one. But I'm not sure if I should repeat this procedure only for reinstall Win10 on the same PC.

Or I just can start a clear reinstall and don't mind?

Is there a way to use older versions of YouTube on desktop?
Is there a way to use older versions of YouTube on desktop?
General Question

Every big design change that I remember in last year or two was the one I didn't like at all.

Examples:

Ambient light - useless for me only consumes more CPU for my laptop and makes everything unnecessarly slower and shortens battery life. But you can turn that off.

Comments automatically showing in fashion of subway surfers gameplay - now I don't even have to scroll to read comments while watching? if I wanna see comment's I'll do that specifically.

Opened video info is moved from bottom to right - again subways surfers fashion now my brain is blown with the video and all the info at the same time. Yes there used to be next video list but at least if you were interested in opened video it wouldn't drag much attention.

Switching accounts doesn't redirect you to home page, and instead tries to imitate as nothing changed, for some reason leaving my laptop unable to pause ongoing video or exit it for about 10 seconds.

A bit older but they removed dislike counts, but we adapted, just like we will to anything, with a bit of complaining or not.

The biggest problem for me is that it is a design drawing too much attention from the video and laggy and slow experience because I have a casual laptop.

I might seem arrogant but these are some things I've been keeping in my mind regarding youtube and these are my opinions. After all I just want some older version because it had already what you need but it wasn't laggy for my laptop.

Important question about external hard drives
Important question about external hard drives
General Question

Recently, I have been thinking about using this 1 TB portable hard drive that I’ve owned, but never used, for 2 years. Specifically, apart from saving important files and potentially transferring my files to a new computer, I also wanted to install PC games onto the portable drive. However, my question is, is it safe to connect a 1 TB portable hard drive to a laptop with only 200-something GB of storage space? And does connecting an external drive to a computer increase the storage space? That’s all I have to ask for now. If I have more questions about this, then I will edit this post to include them. Thanks in advance!

Unlicensed Office Products
Unlicensed Office Products
General Question

Hi everyone,

I have an old laptop (circa 2020) from uni that I really only use for business. All my books are cloud based but I use excel for a bit of record keeping, having a few different spreadsheets for different things.

A couple days ago though every office program suddenly became unlicensed, I’m assuming that maybe the license from my university that this laptop had on it has run out, or something similar.

All I’m wondering is can I just a buy a product key online, in a once off payment to keep using the Office 2019 products? And if so, can anyone recommend a cheap one?

Thanks!

Why Upgrade to Windows 11, what's wrong with Windows 10?
Why Upgrade to Windows 11, what's wrong with Windows 10?
News

Windows 10 is an operating system many have come to know and love, dominating the market starting in 2014. However, today tells a different story. Microsoft has announced that the end of life for Windows 10 will be on October 14, 2025. This will be the time when Microsoft stops releasing security updates and patches, potentially leaving millions of systems still running the OS open and vulnerable to attack.

Today, I am going to explain the need to upgrade to Windows 11, and what it might mean for you.

Windows 11 is Microsoft's newest operating system, publicly released in 2021. As always, its popularity was split and opinions were divided. Windows 11 brought a new and innovative user interface to the table, alleviating some of the design flaws of Windows 10, including the redesign of system apps such as File Explorer and Settings. Microsoft has also made Windows 11 more compatible with hardware drivers out of the box, meaning a new device should work straight away. Windows 11 also incorporates enhanced security, with Windows Defender built-in ensuring your device is protected from malware and viruses. Microsoft has also packed in plenty more features and redesigns that can be explored here.

What stops many people from upgrading their systems to Windows 11 is Microsoft's new strict hardware requirements. These include (but are not limited to) TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot, DirectX 12, and at least 4GB of RAM. The full list can be found here. Newer systems, many built within the last 4 or 5 years, are compatible out of the box, with new PCs today shipping with Windows 11. These systems can be upgraded or have a clean install of Windows 11 using Microsoft's official tools. For PCs that do not meet these requirements, please read the below section as many systems do work with Windows 11 simply by bypassing the requirements.

For non-advanced users without a compatible PC, you can download the latest Windows 11 ISO Image from Microsoft, then download Rufus, a tool that writes the ISO file to a USB Flash Drive. This method can also bypass the system requirement of a minimum 4GB RAM, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot. Check out this handy guide from Make Use Of to learn more.

WARNING*: This method may make your computer unstable and cause data loss. It may also prevent your system from receiving updates. Please back up your data before you start and conduct thorough testing before deciding if it should be your main OS. Digital Digest assumes no responsibility for your decision.*

For Homelab users or Businesses using Windows Server without a compatible PC, Microsoft includes official tools designed for Windows Server that can deploy the Windows client OS. This method bypasses all system requirements and makes Windows 11 deployable over the network, regardless of whether the computer supports the hardware requirements. This is achieved by integrating MDT (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit) with WDS (Windows Deployment Services), a role on Windows Server. Once Windows 11 is configured as an OS for install in MDT, the MDT WinPE Boot ISO can be created and converted to a WIM file, then placed as a boot image in WDS. This method can be installed like a normal OS from a PXE server and can be integrated with Active Directory setups for ease of use. Refer to Microsoft Documentation if you need help.

As this method is designed for businesses in mind it is much more stable and less likely to cause issues than other methods, however you should still conduct your own testing*.*

Summary: Windows 10's life is coming to an end on October 14, 2025, after 11 long years. This means no more security or feature updates will be issued, and there will be a big push to upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft has set strict system requirements for Windows 11; however, these can be bypassed using the methods described above.

SIM Card not for Phone Calls ?!
SIM Card not for Phone Calls ?!
General Question

He folks, I tried around and searched the web. There is no place I could find a strict answer like: Sim Cards in Laptops/Tablets are not for making common phone calls (not VoIP), but I could not find any positive solution for my problem. The only thing seems to be the PHONE APP that was continued only for WinMobile.

So no chance here to solve? I would really like to use the SimCard in my Ideapad-Tablet for Internet AND still be available on my phone number...

Yes I know, a hotspot on my phone could do the trick. But as I am using a sweet BlackBerry Phone, I am afraid that my phone could melt doing this in summer (:

Cheers!

How to set up permission for Windows File Share - Force particular user account login?
How to set up permission for Windows File Share - Force particular user account login?
General Question

Using Windows 10 version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.4529)

I am trying to create a share folder over the network that forces logging into a particular dummy credentials to access the file share regardless of whether both computers have the same user accounts.

For instance let say both computer A and computer B has the same local admin username and password of "Sys Admin", Windows file share automatically lets the Sys Admin account on computer A access the shared folder of computer B even when password required setting is toggled on in Network Sharing settings. So to stop that from happening I tried going on computer B into computer management, created account "sharedummy", gave it a password. Went back into folder sharing permissions and removed all permissions, then added only the sharedummy account to the permissions. I then hopped back on to computer A, and tried to access the share folder on computer B, it says access denied and doesn't give me any option to type in the credentials for the sharedummy account.

So how do I set it up so that it prompts me to type in credentials.

Here is exactly what I am doing to set up the share folder and user.

  1. On Computer B click Start Menu -> Type "Computer Management"

  2. Click "Computer Management" -> Click "Local User and Groups" - > "Users"

  3. Right Click -> Click "New User"

  4. Create New User "sharedummy", with password that never expires, and user can't change password

  5. Navigate to the folder I want to share -> Right click "Properties" -> Click "Sharing" Tab

  6. Click "Network and Sharing Center" -> Open up "All Networks" -> click "Turn on password protected sharing"

  7. Go back to the folder's sharing properties screen -> Click "Advance Sharing"

  8. Click "Share this folder" -> Click "Permissions" -> Click "Remove" on the "Everyone" user group

  9. Click "Add" -> Type "sharedummy" -> Click "Check Names" -> Click "OK"

  10. Click "sharedummy" -> Click "Full Control" in Allow column - Click "OK"

  11. On Computer A Click "Start Menu" -> Open File Explorer -> Click "Network"

  12. Click on Computer B -> Click on shared folder

  13. Gets "Windows cannot access folder" message

So what am I doing wrong here?

Windows and Mac browser RAM usage comparison for 2024
Windows and Mac browser RAM usage comparison for 2024
Discussion

I done this test because I could not find a recent data set with every browser I use compared together.

These amounts were found out by visiting the top 10 most visited sites according to Brave Search data:

Google.com, Youtube.com, Facebook.com, Amazon.com, Wikipedia.org, Instagram.com, eBay.com, Apple.com, Reddit.com and Yahoo.com

All websites had accounts signed in and all browsers used either Ublock Origin or the browsers native ad block (Safari used Adguard for Mac) Ad blockers were the only extensions enabled and private mode were turned on for all browsers to ensure the least amount of personal data was shared with the sites.

There are 2 sets of numbers, and they are categorized by High and Average. High is the max amount of ram found to be used during the testing and average is well the average amount found during testing. Testing time was 4 minutes per site.

Now the numbers:

Browser Windows High (MB) Windows Avg (MB) Mac High (MB) Mac Avg (MB)
