new unraid setup new unraid setup

Hi,

I am in the final stages of building my first Unraid system. I have read many posts and articles, seen many videos and even tried TrueNas scale which I did not like.

Using an old motherboard with Core i5-4570 and 16Gb ram. Yesterday I received my new 2xWD-RED Plus 12Tb disks and 2x1Tb SSD's.

My plan is to use the Red's (that are currently doing preclear) in an Array (primarily for big file storage with less traffic) with 1 as parity and the SSD's as a pool in mirror mode for cache and for the docker folder.

* I might later add a graphics card for plex transcoding and maybe upgrade to 2.5Gbps networking.

So here are my questions:

  1. I was thinkink to use ZFS on the SSD's - but I read about it's need for RAM and if it's in RAM cache maybe I need to also plan a UPS for safe shutdown (which is always good, but is using ZFS more 'risky' without one?)

  2. How do you decide what goes on the pool and what goes on the Array and if you use a mover - under what circumstances?

Your knowledge here will help me greatly so thanks in advance for giving it :)

unRAID to Proxmox Migration unRAID to Proxmox Migration
Help

Hey all,

I’ve got a physical unRAID server that I’m working on getting virtualized onto a new Proxmox server and I’m at a bit of a loss on the best way to go P2V with it. I know I need to create the VM, passthrough my HBA, USB stick, etc, but the problem is, my new system doesn’t have enough drive bays. I’m going from 6x 5TB 2.5” drives to 2x 18TB drives, and plan on keeping 2x of the 5TB’s in as well. I know I can temporarily just pop the side cover off my case, and plug in all the drives, but I’m trying to avoid that if possible.

I can copy the data over manually, and spin up a “fresh” install of unRAID, but I have docker containers, and my cache drive that I’d like to keep in the mix as well. I was hoping to go straight P2V and be done, but based on what I’m trying to do, I don’t think that’ll be possible.

If someone has done something similar, I’m all ears as I’m probably doing it the hard way. I’m also trying to avoid completely shutting down the old server in the meantime if possible due to many people in the house using the storage pretty regularly, everything from laptop backups to Plex streaming.

Upgrading dual parity drives Unraid 6.12.4 Upgrading dual parity drives Unraid 6.12.4

Need some advice. A little background on the system

  • Unraid 6.12.4 with 8 10TB SAS data drives, DUAL 12TB parity Sata drives. The data SAS SED drives are on a controller while the parity SATA drives are on sata ports on the mobo.

I do not have any more physical slots to pre-clear drives, etc prior to actual swap out. That would have been a great way to reduce the overall prep and copy times but oh well.

A scheduled parity check was about 37% in progress when the data drive failed. I noticed this as I begun to prepare. I was considering stopping the check or allowing it to finish when I noticed that SAS drive #7 had failed and disabled itself.

Now, I am not sure how to proceed. Do I leave slot 7 as "no device" and proceed with the 1st parity drive swap out, etc. Then upon completion of that do the second parity drive swap out. Then when all that was said and done replace the failed #7 and upsize it as well?

Or should I replace the failed #7, get that back in service and then do the parity changeouts?

The failed drive was empty.

Just want to share some experience Just want to share some experience

I wanted to share my experiences with different NAS systems, which might help others in a similar situation. I’ve been searching for the perfect NAS, and with my IT background, I sometimes overthink the functions I need. This might come off as a bit of a killjoy post, but it’s meant to be helpful.

I’ve tried several NAS systems, including Synology, TrueNAS, Unraid, OMV, and Proxmox. My main goals have been to have a good *arr stack in Docker, basic file sharing, and VMs (I use VMs for gaming with tools like Parsec).

Initially, I was put off by Unraid’s flexibility, as I wanted to run things like Compose on my terms. However, I found Unraid’s system works well for running Docker containers (without Compose). Updates and backups work reliably, and permissions are managed well. For VMs, Unraid is superior. Its easy access to IMMOU groups and binding makes it a breeze. With the upcoming V7, it’s expected to get even better with features like snapshots.

I switched to OMV for its Debian base, which I could customize. However, I found its tutorials and support lacking. I encountered issues like passwords stopping working, shares not sharing, containers refusing to start after updates, and random Docker permission issues. These problems are probably solvable, but they were frustrating. OMV is largely a one-man project, which is concerning. Additionally, it requires a custom kernel for proper ZFS support and setting up VMs is cumbersome.

I’m planning to transition back to Unraid with V7. My initial reasons for leaving were not well-founded. A NAS should be stable and reliable, and Unraid offers a good set of functions without needing kernel modifications. This was one of the things I loved about Synology – it just worked.

Too much modding isn’t always the best approach. When it comes to payment, I have no issues paying for a product. As a developer, I understand the need for financial support for passion projects. Unraid’s price is very reasonable. One downside of Unraid is its outdated design, which looks like it’s from 1997, but that’s not a dealbreaker.

I hope this post helps others in choosing the right NAS system. Remember, stability and reliability should be top priorities.

My main thing I don't like though is the design, I think its very outdated, but it works and it works well.

I really want to jump on the beta, but I think that it would be clever to wait since its a production server, though I will keep a keen eye on development and will be returning to team unraid very soon

Gaming with Unraid? (Virtual Machines) Gaming with Unraid? (Virtual Machines)
Help

Looking to get a bit of an understanding as to how people may use Unraid on a gaming machine.

My use case is that I have an old desktop which brought me into unraid and this is going to continue along.. I also picked up a further unraid license and am toying with the idea of dropping windows over the next 12 months (have some limited prior linux desktop experience). From what I've understood, the conventional way people are using somemthing like unraid (or proxmox) is to host a VM operating system that they game in. And they are then using a thin client or other system, which they are connecting into, which all their peripherals / monitors are plugged. I haven't fully thought this through but it makes sense to me.

I would like to be able to use UnRAID (or proxmox) on my main gaming PC, and also only use that PC - which would be running the gaming VM - to play games within the VM with bare metal like performance. Can this be achieved and how so? I don't like the idea of running more seperate hardware in order to remotely connect into a VM running on my gaming machine, as is my understanding how others do this.

Is there any way to add an icon to a container that was not created using the Unraid GUI? Nextcloud AIO in this case. Is there any way to add an icon to a container that was not created using the Unraid GUI? Nextcloud AIO in this case.

Pretty much all in the title.

I installed the Nextcloud AIO Master container from CA, which of course spawns numerous containers under its own control. But none of the containers have icons and seeing a line of 10 question marks across my screen kind of sucks.

All SSD raid, Shall I convert it to ZFS or keep it as unraid array raid? All SSD raid, Shall I convert it to ZFS or keep it as unraid array raid?

"If you are running an all-SSD/NMVe server, we recommend assigning all devices to one or more ZFS/BTRFS pools, since Trim/Discard is not supported with unRAID array devices."

This is from the docs, so basically the current setup I have is not good? I just need wait for final release 7 and manually with hard work recreate my raid setup?

Update:

Just upgraded to Unraid 7 beta 1 - no any problems and also reformat my main array to zfs and so far so good.

Nginx proxy manager stopped working after power outage? Nginx proxy manager stopped working after power outage?

So i've had my server running for probably 2 years now pretty well. I run all of my dockers through a reverse proxy (nginx proxy manager) to make them accessible outside of my local network. However, my power flickered today and I had to reboot my server and router.

For whatever reason, nginx proxy manager won't work for any of my dockers (except itself). nginx.mydomain.com ends up working perfectly fine, and all the certs look up to date, but all of my other docker containers throw the 502 bad gateway error when I try to connect to their url.

I double-checked my port forwarding settings on my router and nothing has changed on that front, so right now I'm just really confused. Anyone have any tips or ideas on what the issue is?

In need of some advice for my first build In need of some advice for my first build

Hi,Can i please get some hardware advice? I'm reading about the disk layout but didn't find any hardware reconmendations with specific software wishes. I'm going to build an Unraid system with 18 disks connected to 1 or 2 LSI controllers. On Unraid i would like to install the followingBack-up Veeam M365 (my own tenant)Xpenology docker of VM for CIFS and back-up local clientsPlex docker (transcoding max 4K streams)Sonarr docker Radarr dockerHeadphones dockerPortainerBazarrLidarrProwlarrSabnzbdWith this software requirements i would like to be at 2/3 of my system peak. The server isn't going to be 24/7 running but some power efficiency would be nice. That's also why i think an older Intel i7 is a bad idea but maybe unavoidable.I'm still looking for builds from other unraid users. Lot's of them from the US but electricity in EU/NL comes at a higher price Thank you for your tips and help

UnRaid users with N5105 processors - what are you running? UnRaid users with N5105 processors - what are you running?
Help

I recently assembled a new unRaid server with these specs:

a n5105 processor, 32gb ram, X2 m.2 drives for appdata and containers, a 1tb ssd dedicated as cache for Linux iso downloads, and finally x2 10tb HDDs for the array (with a 20tb parity drive).

So far I'm running the arrs, qbittorrentVPN, piHole, and Plex.

There's another post I'd made because I was surprised to see with qbit downloading (using Wireguard for VPN) the processor was running between 40%-80% with 5 downloads going.

Now that I have piHole up and running, I occasionally get messages that I believe are telling me that the processor isn't capable of keeping up ("long-term load larger than numbers of processors..."). These messages usually appear when I've tested watching stuff on Plex. I have PlexPass and hw transcoding seems to be working fwiw.

I was planning to migrate my home assistant OS virtual machine over to this new unRaid box, but that doesn't seem like it's going to be possible given the current issues.

I guess my question is, for those of you with the same or similar hardware, does this all pass the eye test? Are your systems similarly capable (or incapable, at times)?

Appreciate any insight.

What to do with QBittorrent to fix this What to do with QBittorrent to fix this
Help

Hi all, Im new to Unraid and already had many issues like data loss or parity issue and multiple others, but slowly Im getting there and so far everything going well past 2 weeks for me except some devices getting alot of loading + CPU usage, it seems as if theres something causing all of.

I prefer to show pictures than talk too much, so can you check my config and let me know why Qbittorrent causing too much CPU usage? my CPU always 45-60% despite its 12 cores CPU, little search showed that Qbittorrent causing it and it might be due to data stored in drive not in cache, my question is should I edit docket app of Qbittorrent to put data in cache only? will that erase data or cause issues while its still downloading? will I lose torrents or Radarr and Sonarr have issues?

Im noob so try to make solution step by step will be helpful in fixing this without affecting anything else

I am trying to run a 1.20.1 forge modded Minecraft server on Unraid docker using Crafty Controller. The server works and runs however, it frequently gives me ""Unknown Host" when trying to login. The server is running, I can see the terminal running showing me everything is fine, I can interact with the terminal, however I cannot connect to the server. UNLESS, I add a second server to the list using the same IP and then both saved servers using the same IP work and I can join from either until I logout, After I logout, It says "Unknown Host" again until I do it again.

This is my first time using Crafty Controller to host a modded server however, I've hosted modded servers before using Unraid dockers such as ATM9 and StoneBlock.

I did custom create this pack but still, I have no idea what's going on.

Optimal Disk Configuration Advice Needed Optimal Disk Configuration Advice Needed

Hey everyone,

I'm setting up a new Unraid server and could use some advice on the best way to configure my disks. Here’s what I have:

  • 1TB M.2 SSD

  • 256GB M.2 SSD

  • 4TB HDD

  • 3TB HDD

  • 2TB HDD

  • 1TB HDD

  • 4 x 500GB HDDs

If you were in my shoes, how would you set up these disks? I'm considering using the 4TB HDD as a parity disk, but I'm unsure how to best configure the SSDs and the rest of the array.

The server will primarily be used for Plex, arrsuite and torrents, and I might run a Pi-hole VM as well.

Any suggestions or advice on how to set up my array, cache, and utilize these disks efficiently would be greatly appreciated!

Why can't I get a simple Windows 10 VM running? Why can't I get a simple Windows 10 VM running?

I've had multiple attempts at this. Today I started from fresh with new downloads of the ISO direct from MSoft & latest virtio.

This is where I get when starting:

Ideas for an asustor flashstor? Ideas for an asustor flashstor?

My buddy gave me an asus flashstor (6 m.2 drives), and i'm trying to decide what i should do with it.

This will be my 3rd unraid server (Have a main and a backup server) and i'm trying to figure out what to do with it. Since its all ssd, i'll probably really be using it once unraid 7 hits stable so that i dont have to have a single drive for the array and the rest on a pool.
I'll probably put all 6 drives on a zfs pool.

Any ideas what to do with it? My unraid use case is mainly a media server. My main server (12600k) runs all the arrs and plex, backup server just gets weekly sync's.
