The TCS-powered app details 14 places of historical significance for the Ngunnawal people, the indigenous inhabitants of Canberra, across the marathon’s 42km-course
PRESS RELEASE
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA | May 29, 2024: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS), a global leader in IT services, consulting, and business solutions, has been honored with a Gold Stevie® in the Innovation in Entertainment Apps category at the 11th annual Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards. This recognition celebrates TCS’ dedication to fostering respect for the indigenous people and raising awareness of the First Nations’ history.
The award acknowledges TCS’ innovative approach to using technology to connect participants with the rich cultural heritage of Australia’s First Nations people, through the Canberra Times Marathon Festival presented by the TCS mobile race day app. The TCS-powered app helps educate users about the local Indigenous history by highlighting 14 historically significant sites of the Ngunnawal people, the Indigenous inhabitants of Canberra, along the 42km marathon course. This feature aims to build relationships, respect, and trust between the wider Australian community and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Rob de Castella, Australian Olympian, and Founder of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation, said, “TCS continues to demonstrate their deep commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through the power of running. We are proud to partner with an organization that shares our values.”
In its 2024 iteration, the Canberra Times Marathon Festival app used this interactive feature as a core element, with this year’s event seeing a 63% increase in participant numbers and a 50% rise in app downloads. Additionally, the marathon raised over $200,000 for charity, marking a 36% increase compared to 2023.
Vikram Singh, Country Head, TCS Australia and New Zealand, said, “Reconciliation in Australia continues to be a matter of priority, and sport is the ultimate cultural community connector. We are proud to be recognized with a Stevie award for leveraging technology to not only transform the runner’s experience but to also inspire local communities to connect with the country and remind us that this land we tread is steeped in rich Indigenous history and culture.”
Lisa Holmes, Chief Executive Officer, Sole Motive, said, “Running continues to grow in popularity, and our partnership with TCS has been pivotal to our efforts to engage our community. TCS has helped us connect runners, spectators and the wider community through a platform that grows and adapts, adding innovative features that enhance the experience for all.”
