Description
English: Strait of Georgia

This image is taken from the top of Mount Benson (49d, 8m, 59s N, 124d, 3m, 4 s W), on the east coast of Vancouver Island 9 km west of Nanaimo British Columbia which has an elevation of 1023 meters. The image is a composite with a range of bearings of more than 180 degrees centred about NW.

The main body of water that runs the full width of the image is the Strait of Georgia. The snow covered peaks in the distance are the Caren Range, the Earle Range and others of the Coast Mountains of mainland British Columbia.

In the left quarter of the image, the highest peak is Mount Arrowsmith. To the right, the first islands are Denman (separated from Vancouver Island by Baynes Sound) and then the taller Hornby Island which is separated from Denman by Lambert Channel. Above Denman Island, Mount Washington is visible. The visible smoke is in Errington and the hump to the right of it is Little Mountain and then Parksville.

The larger island in second quarter of the image from the left is Texada Island and the lower Island running most of its length is Lasqueti Island. The small island near the right end of Lasqueti is Sangster Island and the pair of Islands below that are the Ballenas Islands. Closer and to the right are two islands (white buildings on the left one) which are the Winchelsea Island.

At the centre of the image near the mainland coast, the two island with the white sandy bluffs are North and South Thormanby Islands. The small island to their right it Merry Island.

The city to the right of centre in the foreground is Nanaimo. The harbour to the left is Departure Bay where two BC Ferris can be seen at their terminal. The larger of the two islands enclosing the harbour is Newcastle Island and the smaller one to the right is Protection Island. Above the left end of Newcastle Island, Snake Island is visible.

The larger island to the right of Nanaimo with cliffs facing the camera is Gabriola Island. The BC Ferry can be seen heading for the harbour at the north end of Gabriola. The thin strip of land below Gabriola is Duke Point. In the far distance above Gabriola, Vancouver is visible in the haze.

Just below the right (south) end of Gabriola the triangular land is Mudge Island. The tip of the tree points to the opening of Dodd Narrows which runs to the right from there. The land this side of Dodd Narrows is part of Vancouver Island, near Cedar. Following to the right of Mudge Island there is Link Island and then, on the other side of the broken pole, de Courcy Island. The water below Decourcy is Sutil Channel and the water above it is Pylades Channel. Above that is Valdes Island.
