File:Mitch Grassi with Pentatonix.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Herby talk thyme 17:00, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- As with all the others, Herbythyme, this photo is not a copyvio. I would assume there are checks in place for checking from where photos have been obtained, what licensing has been noted upon upload, etc. before marking images copyvios and issuing warnings. Winkelvi (talk) 17:42, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- This is indeed OK, so restored. For Herbythyme's defense, I should say that there was a Flickr review tag, but no direct link to Flickr. So it was confusing. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:54, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- I appreciate all you've done to "undelete" these photos, Yann. Winkelvi (talk) 20:55, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
Apologies
editYes - I'm sorry about that. I was late for being somewhere and once I'd headed off I realised that I might have made a mistake other than the "-1" one which was all I had time to do at the time. As far as the "delay" in replying was concerned I'm afraid we don't all live in the same time zone. Thanks to Yann for sorting it out and apologies for the mistake. --Herby talk thyme 05:27, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

editHi, thanks for all your contributions to Commons. Though I noticed the you weren't adding categories to your uploads. Please make sure you add appropriate categories to make it easier for other users to find your images. Also, when you link to other Commons files, it's helpful to use wikilink or templates rather than hyperlinks (i.e https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File...). You can link to other files like this: [[:File:Filename]] or using the {{ExtractedFrom}} template in case of crops. Thanks. Ytoyoda (talk) 17:53, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note and suggestions, Ytoyoda. Winkelvi (talk) 18:13, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
Image problems
editPlease make sure to only use the same copyright tag as the original image you extracted any image from because you have no rights to the image to give it a different copyright licence. You also should provide the original Flickr source url even for modified images such as File:Carly Fiorina NFRW 2015 lighting corrected.jpg and File:Carly Fiorina NFRW 2015 lighting corrected 2.jpg so we can check the copyright status easily without having to search through the original file for the Flick source. I've fixed these two but you might want to review your other recent images. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 11:08, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up, Ww2censor. I will do it differently in the future. Winkelvi (talk) 20:45, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
- No problem. Cheers Ww2censor (talk) 00:04, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
File tagging File:Mark Fuhrman in 2008.jpg
editThis media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Mark Fuhrman in 2008.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |
User:MB298 is engaging in a pattern of disruptive and uncivil conduct
editApparently, because you cautioned that user to cut it out with the repeated copyvios, he/she has turned to strictly enforcing Commons policy against other editors instead (as in me), without any warning and any discussion. See User talk:MB298. --Coolcaesar (talk) 00:07, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
Cat Stevens
editWhat a fabulous photo of Cat Stevens/Yusuf!! Just wanted to leave a big smile here from the en.wikipedia-- took me a lot of time finding most of the others and getting the photographers to adapt Creative Commons, but the pic you uploaded was what we really needed. Well done! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 11:11, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
Please revert yourself, and if necessary upload under a new file name. Two editors, including the original photographer clearly disagree that your edits are improvements. And yes, changing the colors is "altering" them. Storkk (talk) 13:20, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
- The photographer does not have a say above other contributors as your message here seems to indicate. In fact, at the en Wikipedia, Gage Skidmore (as Calibrador) has been told repeatedly to stop forcing his photos and versions of those photos into articles. By reverting to his preferred version of the photos he's uploaded here, he is doing just that when the photo is already in an article. Take a look at the thread still open regarding his conduct at AN for a more, in-depth understanding. Winkelvi (talk) 19:52, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

- I did not imply that the original photographer holds more sway. However, I am stating that your version is materially different enough to violate COM:OVERWRITE, and implying that it is not just "different" but worse. I would note parenthetically that the trouble you describe above (which I haven't looked into, and which isn't particularly relevant for Commons) would seem to be entirely avoided if materially different versions that WP preferred had been uploaded under new filenames. Storkk (talk) 21:28, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
- Actually, no, the edits I have made to the image are minor improvements and there is no violation of Overwrite. Winkelvi (talk) 21:30, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
- The fact that you think they are improvements is not in dispute. I think they are not improvements, I am not alone in thinking so, and these are "contested changes", thus not OK. Storkk (talk) 21:33, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Cropping images
editBy way of information for the future, when you want to crop an image I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image, s you did with File:Billy Crudup 2015 1b.jpg, but you have a choice. I hope you can see how everyone can save time and frustration by using CropTool. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 21:40, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- If cropping these images were all I was doing, I would consider it. -- ψλ ● ✉ ✓ 22:34, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- You can also rotate images with CropTool but using it first, even if you then want to alter the exposure or levels can up done afterwards, as it saves having to be manually reviewed. I'd be pleased to know what else you want to do with images. Just today I reviewed File:Laura Ingraham Feb 2018.jpg but it's fine now. Thanks for replying. Ww2censor (talk) 22:25, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
CropTool
editIn the future, I would appreciate it if you used CropTool to crop images. This tool allows users to crop images already on Commons without having to download the images. It also makes sure that, if necessary, the file has already passed license review. It also properly links the images to one another, in case an issue with them comes up later. - On the Williams image, I brightened it slightly, I did a digital noise reduction, and I blurred the background a bit. So, more than just cropping. If I plan on just cropping, I'll try to remember to use the crop tool here. Thanks for responding. -- ψλ ● ✉ ✓ 16:30, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
Nagualdesign
editHello, I understand that you have previously had issues with Nagualdesign on English Wikipedia, and the result was a one-way, voluntary interaction ban. This ban, of course, doesn't extend to Commons, but he does seem to feel bothered by your interactions here. I do see that the majority of your edits over the past two week are closely connected to him, and some accuse him of incivility. What is your perspective on this? Guanaco (talk) 04:56, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
- My perspective is that he's a whiner (go back to the beginning of the Tesla debacle - had nothing to do with me - even look at his diva exit and all the diffs for the last eight days at Wikipedia because he wasn't getting his way here) who likes to create drama and disruption wherever he goes. He's playing the nice, fun guy at en.wp now because he thinks he "won". But most of that bunch aren't his friends (he just thinks they are) and they'd throw him under the bus in a second if they needed to in order to maintain their need for power and control. Regardless, the real ND will come out again eventually and he will end up with another iban or a block...but the scapegoat won't be me, just some other dude who got in his path. He's long had difficulty communicating with contributors here and at en.wp, so I wasn't at all surprised at his tantrum over the drawing. Because he was enabled at en.wp, he now feels entitled here. My comments to him/near him since my voluntary iban at en.wp have been nothing less than matter of fact and neutral. If he's complaining about that, I can't help it and would say that he should just look the other way if my presence here and commenting in the same threads bothers him so much. I see no need for an iban here - it's a very different environment and I doubt he'd get the agenda-driven support of the usual Commons editors if he tried to stir up dust between he and I, anyway. I can continue to be and have already been perfectly civil with him. The question is, will he? -- ψλ ● ✉ ✓ 05:30, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
- I don't have much clout on Commons, but I do know you have a long track record of going off the rails at people (and sometimes getting blocked for it) on en-wp, and I have already tried to explain to you that you are not the NagualDesign civility enforcement brigade and policing his behaviour is not your problem. Unless you want NagualDesign to edit and enhance pictures you upload, I can't see any particular reason why you need to communicate with him on here. So I would strongly advise to just drop it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:31, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
- Okay. I've spent some time looking at both of your edit histories. Overall I think you both have your quirks and difficult tendencies, as do most active wiki editors. We give hours, months, years of our lives to build these projects; normal people take Wikipedia for granted as a source of knowledge. Nagualdesign reacts emotionally more often than most editors. You are more rule-oriented, with a tendency to fixate on an issue until it's resolved to your satisfaction. You're persistent and he's agitated, feeling as though you've backed him into a corner. This doesn't mean you're guilty of any wrongdoing. It means we have a problem, and it would help if you step back.
- I'll give you some advice on how to avoid unnecessary conflict on Commons. On DRs, it isn't helpful to insist on a close, or on speedy deletion. We have hundreds, maybe thousands of open DRs and other backlogs. We will get to them all when we can, and there is no use rushing us on the more controversial ones. Some are extremely obvious and are only waiting on an admin to look at it and click the buttons. Others are more difficult decisions and need a quick second or third opinion from a knowledgeable editor. It also isn't helpful to comment on user conduct issues at a DR. Such discussions are off-topic and they reflect poorly on everyone involved. Don't take the bait. Use a user talk page or, as a last resort, a noticeboard. But first consider whether anything really needs to be said or done.
- You do need to stop policing his edits. This edit was clearly correct if you look at the context, and reverting it only served as a provocation. Yes, it's a general guideline not to edit other people's comments, but fixing links is fine. If he does something bad, someone else will see it and deal with it. There's no reason for you to be involved where his conduct is concerned. Guanaco (talk) 13:17, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
- I hear you, Guanaco, and will take it all to heart. Just one small nitpick on your comments above - re: "There's no reason for you to be involved where his conduct is concerned." I think we can all agree that Commons admins can't be everywhere at all times. When it comes to conduct of any user, and considering this is a "community", there may be reason at times for editors to be involved or concerned about editor conduct - any editor (hence, the reason why Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems exists). But, I get what you are saying overall and will go with it. Thanks for the kindness you've displayed and the time you took to properly assess the situation. I wish the same were more common among en.wp admins. -- ψλ ● ✉ ✓ 18:20, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion
editSome contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works.
