All the night of the 3d the enemys batteries wereshelling our lines and when we reached their works and foundthem gone it meant a stern chase. To retard pursuit theyhad buried torpedoes in the abatis fronting their works andalong the sides of the road where the officers and menmarched; while a number of men of other regiments werewounded by these missiles, fortunatelynone of the Twenty-third were injured. There was quite a rivalry to have thefirst flag on the rebel works. Left General Guide Ed. Wilson(afterwards lieutenant) who was a swift runner, took thecolors and reached the works first, amid the hurrahs of theboys. The division bivouacking at Chessemans plantation and thenext day made a forced march arriving on the battle field ofWilliamsburg late in the afternoon of May 5th. The two left companiesunder Captain Maxwell being near the fort were the first toenter, the enemy having left and were running across the fieldin the direction of the town, quite a number of their woundedbeing left behind in their works. General Keyes, the corps commander, in his official reportstates: Two companies of the Twenty-third Pennsylvania,Colonel Neill, were the first to take possession of FortMagruder, as that regiment had been the first to plant theStars and Stripes on the works at Lees Mills. Skirmishing with his rear guard through the town, whereit stacked arms south of Mary and Williams College, every in-dication showed a hasty retreat with his abandoned dead andwounded, wagons and caissons stuck in the mud, and occas-ional pieces of artillery.
