  Picture of the Year
The Sixth Annual Wikimedia Commons POTY Contest
Thanks for your participation! The 2011 winners have been announced!
If you encounter problems with the voting-App, please report them at MediaWiki talk:EnhancedPOTY.js For an alternative means of support, please use our help system so we can assist you more efficiently. Committee members tend to use the mailing list or IRC channel for discussion. Thank you for your understanding!

Let's get going

Let's get going. Who wants to help organize POTY-2011?? --99of9 (talk) 00:08, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Me! I'll help do Spanish translations too. --ZooFari 01:48, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm Spanish is done. --ZooFari 01:53, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I guess the 2010 Spanish was done, but for now Template:2011POTY could use Spanish (maybe mostly copied from Template:2010POTY/es). --99of9 (talk) 02:11, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done German. A brave soul might copy all the 2010 translations and use a bit of research to find "Fifth" and "Sixth" in each language and replace. That would leave just the new "Updates" parameter to translate. Rd232 (talk) 08:20, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Russian is done. --Kaganer (talk) 12:30, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Voting rules

I would suggest to change them. Only count edits on Commons not globally. This would ease verification (e.g. by script). -- RE rillke questions? 11:46, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why would it make that much difference, at least for SUL accounts? Anyway, I don't think we want less participation from less active users; POTY is an opportunity to engage users who don't visit Commons so often (if anything, we should try harder to invite POTY voting from other projects). Rd232 (talk) 16:11, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Both reasons are included in your reply: There are still some users without SUL and they visit Commons: Click a button and go. To gain good contributors, it needs a concept for "customer retention". But if we invest our time in manually checking eligibility, we could also allow users with e.g. 1 quality image on Commons, ... -- RE rillke questions? 17:14, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"There are still some users without SUL" - well then they can be a special case (script can identify them and request manual verification). I think perhaps "if it ain't broke don't fix it" applies to changing the voting rules. Rd232 (talk) 00:41, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think the situation is more that "it is broke, so let's fix it". I did some vote checking last time, and I recall from the few spot checks I did on other people's checks that the trickier cases (e.g. non-SUL users without user page cross-links) were not always handled consistently. We shouldn't assume that "manual verification" will get it right when the rules are this complex. --Avenue (talk) 09:50, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK - if manual verification is a problem that's much more of an argument for doing something. Given the existence of this tool and this tool, I'm not at all sure that changing the rules is the "something"; maybe better guidance is enough. Rd232 (talk) 13:50, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The tools provided do not output in JSONP, only work with SUL and do not allow specifying a time span. There is also pathoschild's tool but it works only with SUL and does not output JSONP. -- RE rillke questions? 14:47, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The first one is not just SUL, I think. The other issues don't matter enormously for manual verification. Rd232 (talk) 02:05, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • The system I talked about below would include functionality to check the global eligibility, which I think is the best way to encourage participation. This is a sticking point, so before we build anything let's try to determine what we want and how we'll deal with problems. theMONO 03:44, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Infrastructure

There are two ways for the polling-pages:

  • One page per user: User lists his/her preferred images.
    • Advantage: User can easily mange his/her votes (as long as we allow it with abuse-filter); only one eligibility check per page; script can easily display whether the user voted for a picture (last year's script scanned the last 500 contribs but there are problems e.g. when the user revoked a vote). Sample: [[Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/uservotes/<username>]]
  • One page per picture (like last year)
    • The only advantage, I can see are for statistical purposes and maybe less pages.

-- RE rillke questions? 15:17, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Another advantage of the one-page-per-user approach is that it would be easier to check whether someone voted for more than one image in the final round (and perhaps easier to explain that they shouldn't). We had problems with multiple votes last year. --Avenue (talk) 22:18, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if mw:Extension:SecurePoll is an option? Commons has it installed, but it's not clear how to set up a vote, or how flexible it is. User:Siebrand has contributed to it, we could ask him - or else someone involved with its use in en.wp Arbcom elections. Rd232 (talk) 02:03, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(About SecurePoll) Some of POTY2009 committee members considered if mw:Extension:SecurePoll was available (though gave it up in the end). SecurePoll is not suitable for a poll with so many candidates like POTY Round 1. It may be useful in the Final (round 2) with 30 or 40 candidates, though I hear SecurePoll doesn't support images (we would have to vote by number or filename), and you can't see who voted which candidate. --miya (talk) 14:36, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Extension

I think we're overdue for a voting extension. I've talked to some people and seen some interest. So far, I've identified what I think we need, which I'll write up in a page with pictures soon. However, I'd love to hear any ideas; this would be a photo contest-specific thing. The frontend interface will require JavaScript and there's some neat interaction stuff we could do, especially with a strong base system. I'll post more info later. theMONO 03:42, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Any progress on this? --99of9 (talk) 11:50, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Meeting

We're planning a preliminary meeting on IRC sometime soon to talk about the rules of the contest and establish the required functionality for our tools this year. It should be approximately twenty to thirty minutes on the #poty2011 IRC channel. Please RSVP at this site as soon as possible. theMONO 00:54, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template issues

The new template on the project page (of this talkpage) has a slight problem--Part of the text links at the bottom are not visible-the border of the template is covering the text.--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 13:59, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Support system

The "Are you eligible to vote" link in the our 2011 support system is broken--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 14:03, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

yes, the link is bad (the actual page, if you get there, is fine). I don't know how to edit the link. Rd232 (talk) 14:13, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is a picture there of a castle. It shouldn't be there. Tomer T (talk) 17:00, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is a very tiny climber. Someone else should decide. -- RE rillke questions? 18:12, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. I recognized this topic as "one of human activities", for the file name was(is) "File:Climbers Roque-Gageac.jpg". If anyone active in POTY would second/support Tomer T's opinion, I don't oppose to change its category - (change to "Nature views" ?)--miya (talk) 13:16, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's people activity, but they're really tiny in the pic. It seems out of place in that gallery. I'd say Nature views or architecture. Tomer T (talk) 15:01, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is a picture of a castle here, too...and looks pretty photographic...--Japs 88 (talk) 22:41, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This one
Indeed. Should be fixed. Tomer T (talk) 08:30, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Typo in header

Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2011/Galleries/Skeleton, Mummies needs a "u" in it. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 00:55, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"M" should probably be lowercased as well. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 01:23, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And it should be "Skeletons" (plural). --Avenue (talk) 02:09, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Similar entries?

Two versions of the same image, as far as I can tell: here and here. Is this okay? – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 01:24, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To clarify (sorry about that): Both are shown in Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2011/Galleries/People. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 04:41, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
File:1944 NormandyLST.jpg is not a featured picture on Commons. File:1944 NormandyLST clean.jpg and File:Into the Jaws of Death 23-0455M edit.jpg are. -- RE rillke questions? 08:11, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

header page "look"

hi, i like the new look on the mainpage for this, but 2 suggestions:

1. you don't need to preceed the contest year with a number (i.e.: "1 2010"); it's visually confusing & unnecessary. the numbering scheme also seems to be backwards? in that either the 2007 contest should be "#1", or i am deeply unclear as to what is the point of the numbers? o__0

2. it would be nice if the photos were captioned to indicated "1st place, 2nd place" (& add at least 3rd place?). granted that it is reasonably intuitive to assume that the 1st place image would be to the left of the 2nd place image, but it doesn't hurt to be clear & explicit about this; our mission is to educate, & ppl new to the contest might not necessary "get it" without captioning...

i would make the changes myself, & might have a go in a day or so, if i get no response here, but since i'm not active in running the contest, i thought it would be more polite to mention it first. :)

cheers & good luck with the operation!

Lx 121 (talk) 02:55, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Simply make the required changes but keep in mind that captions need translation. So you should offer a way for easy translation. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 08:18, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1944 Normandy invasion

Why are there two versions of it in Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Galleries/People? -- King of 05:28, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One of them is the source file and the other is the edited file. --McZusatz (talk) 07:42, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Panoramic views not displayed in panorama mode

The candidates in Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Galleries/Panoramic views are placed in 400px boxes, which are not enough to contain the panoramas. -- King of 05:32, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this bug-report. It will be addressed in the new version of the POTY-App available in 3 hours. -- RE rillke questions? 08:28, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
