Add a different version to an image

I want to add a version to this image which does not have so much whitespace. Silly question: how do I upload it so it becomes an alternative version of the original rather than creating a whole new entry. Ldm1954 (talk) 19:59, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Alternative versions are not supported by the software, but you can upload a cropped version of the image under a different name and add a link in the description template with a new line |other_versions = [[the other version]]. Commons:CropTool was made specifically for this purpose and will losslessly crop a JPEG file. --rimshottalk 21:08, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mostly correct, but rather than just [[the other version]]:
It looks like Commons:CropTool is, again, largely working, and if it works for you it might save you some effort. Among other things, it does the above correctly. - Jmabel ! talk 19:02, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. CropTool worked, although I might have created a duplicate cropped image as well. Ldm1954 (talk) 19:01, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I upload a SVG tracing of a WWII Billboard?

I want to upload a SVG tracing of this image Deutsches_Apotheken-Logo_mit_Lebensrune.jpg. I ask for guidance in relation to categorization and how to give credit to the original uploader. Many thanks. Grojasp44 (talk) 22:15, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grojasp44. File:Deutsches_Apotheken-Logo_mit_Lebensrune.jpg looks like it would fall under COM:CB#Noticeboards and signs. It's also looks unlikely to entirely be the original work of the person who uploaded the file; in other words, the uploader owns the copyright on the photo, but they don't necessarily own the copyright on what they photographed. So, if the sign itself is something that is either no longer eligible or never was eleigble for copyright, you shouldn't really need to attribute the person who took the photo at all. In the English Wikipedia article en:Algiz#Modern usage where the file is being used, there's a link to this website which discusses the history of the sign/symbol. If the symbol is now considered to be in the public domain (sorry I don't read German), then you should be able create a SVG tracing of it yourself. Now, you may have to provide two copyright licenses (one for the original symbol and one for the tracing) if you upload it to Commons in a way similar to what those who create SVG emblazons of COM:COA do. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:42, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. I will upload the image and then I'll ask again if this was done accordingly. Grojasp44 (talk) 01:00, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do i upload this image file format to Commons? Trade (talk) 19:33, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Trade: Convert to an accepted file type (presumably a lossless one) and upload that. - Jmabel ! talk 01:55, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Any suggestions for method? Trade (talk) 02:10, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Trade: Bring it into the graphics program of your choice (I use GIMP, but for this even Microsoft Paint will do, as of course will GraphicsMagic and ImageMagic from the command line). Save as a PNG. - Jmabel ! talk 16:32, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: Any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:23, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: So do we have a lossless format that will not have that problem? - Jmabel ! talk 17:32, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
webp with lossless codec. Or jpeg with 99% quality setting. Or tiff with a lossless codec. Or the original format from gimp. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 18:31, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@C.Suthorn: Do any of those other format / codec combinations get automatically sharpened when thumbnailed for display on WMF wikis like jpeg does?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:32, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know PNG is the only raster image file format (apart from GIF, but GIF is mainly used for animation and the total number of GIF files on commons is very low) that is assumed by wikimedia (developers) to contain "graphic" content, while all other raster formats are assumed to contain "foto" content and therefore are thumbnailed using jpeg and using scaling optimized for foto content? Updating files

I'd like to know how I can update, i.e., replace a file previously uploadad.

Thank you Mrgarthholmes (talk) 21:25, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mrgarthholmes: Is this about a file you uploaded, or that someone else uploaded? - Jmabel ! talk 01:52, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, it is a file that I originally uploaded. Mrgarthholmes (talk) 20:04, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrgarthholmes: If you are replacing it with an improved version of the same image, absolutely. If anything else, it should be uploaded under a distinct filename. - Jmabel ! talk 22:14, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, this is the page of the file: File:The Crystal Sea - Lyrics.pdf - Wikimedia Commons but I cannot find a link to replace or upload a new version. Mrgarthholmes (talk) 02:51, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Convenience link: File:The Crystal Sea - Lyrics.pdf.
@Mrgarthholmes: If you look below the "File History", you will see a link "Upload a new version of this file". - Jmabel ! talk 04:46, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrgarthholmes: Why are you uploading images in pdf format? Where did you get them? Where are the videos that the lyrics are from? Did the permission you provided in Ticket:2019112410000051 cover overwrites?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:55, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote the lyrics, for the song "The Crystal Sea", which have now change, hence why I wish to update the file. I use .pdf files on my website, however the text was formatted as a Tramscroll, which I no longer use. Mrgarthholmes (talk) 09:30, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Need senior wikipedian to review my latest image upload and article edit

-- Wolfpack1999 (talk) 01:44, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • The source site for the file does not state the claimed free license you placed on the file. Do not assume something you find on the web is free licensed unless that is specifically stated. It seems over COM:TOO India, too complex to be PD. As to the article, ask on en:Wikipedia. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 03:26, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
what kind of license is suitable for this image? it is exact the same as found on the school official webpage. Wolfpack1999 (talk) 03:46, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hi Wolfpack1999. Do you want to upload a crest or a logo? They might seem similar, but they're treated differently.
If you're asking about a logo, you can only upload it to Commons if its licensing complies with COM:L. Commons doesn't accept fair use content of any type per COM:FAIR so anything you upload will either need to be too old or too simple to be eligible for copyright protect, or will need to be released by its copyrigh holder under a free license that Commons accpets. Anything else should probably be uploaded to English Wikipedia as non-free content, but only if its uses satisfy English Wikipedia's non-free content use policy.
If, on the other hand you're asking about a crest, then things get a bit more complicated. Images of crests are quite similar to images of coats-of-arms in that they're visual representations of written definitions. As explained in COM:COA, this written defintion (referred to as the "blazon") is almost never considered eligible for copyright protection, but correspoinding visual representations (referred to as "emblazons") almost always are. So, you can't upload a crest you find on the school's website to Commons unless the school gives their consent to do so, and this usually means someone at the school emails Wikipedia VRT and verifies they've given their consent. Uploading such a file to English Wikipedia is almost never allowed because anyone can create their own visual representation of a crest based on its defintion, and they could then upload a freely licensed version of their representation to Commons or English Wikipedia to use instead of any non-free one found online. You could try and get the school to give its consent by following the guidance at en:WP:PERMISSION if you want; or, you could ask someone at en:WP:HERALDRY or COM:GL/ILL to try a create a freely licensed visual representation for you to use. Either of those could be uploaded to Commons and would be preferrable any non-free version of the crest you find online. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:08, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
it seem complicated to have an image upload on wikimedia due to strict license unless it is your own creation. Thank you for clarification. Wolfpack1999 (talk) 05:04, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Obviously. By claiming that a photo is under a free license when it's obviously not is a form of fraud (which is illegal) Trade (talk) 22:12, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nbadraan. Only a Commons administrator can delete a file, but you can request deletion as explained in Commons:Deletion policy if certain criteria are met. What files are you referring to? Why do you think they need to be deleted? Are these files you uploaded yourself? Were they uploaded by someone else? Trouble with upload form, for a non-copyrightable image

When I uploaded File:Radical-center-but-stars-are-haphazardly-rotated.svg, the form forced me to put an incorrect date because I had selected "I read online that this is public domain".

(Which is true: I read online that images generated with the help of AI are not subject to copyright, which I assume is the same as "public domain". Maybe that doesn't apply here because the AI only helped with the technical details of implementing my precisely worded design as an SVG?)

Also I had trouble figuring out what to put in the author field.

Anyway, the ideal license for this would be CC0. Is that a possibility?

And I'd love it if you fixed your form to not force me to put an incorrect date.

— Jruderman (talk) 04:25, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jruderman: Hi. I have corrected the date manually. And I think this file could fall within the public domain of simple geometry even though it is created with the help of AI. I have updated the file descriptions which is likely to make it better. Cheers. Cypp0847 (talk) 05:49, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Cypp0847. This is an improvement.
What changes do you recommend for the upload wizard to make it less confusing for others in the future?
— Jruderman (talk) 06:59, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jruderman: I think you can upload the file under CC0 or other free licenses which would not force you not to choose the date of today. And even wrong particulars were inputted, you can still alter it in the file description page. The upload wizard is primarily trying to be hassle-free and therefore its functions are less comprehensive. Cypp0847 (talk) 12:53, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Am I allowed to slap CC0 on something that isn't copyrightable? I kind of assumed I had to be the author in order to do that. (I suppose I could have argued that I was the author, because the AI contribution was merely technical.) Jruderman (talk) 23:19, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can't put CC-0 on someone else's work. If it's your own work, and it's so simple that it is PD in the U.S. and whatever country you are from, but possibly above the threshold of originality for copyright in some other countries, it can be a good idea to add CC-0 to clarify any doubt for people in those countries. - Jmabel ! talk 00:18, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think I'm missing something here. I presume this is about the Upload Wizard, which I never use. Does choosing "I read online that this is public domain" actually mean that you cannot accurately add a date, or was the original poster here confused? If it does really have that limitation, we probably should open a phabricator ticket. ATTN: @Sannita (WMF). - Jmabel ! talk 20:27, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's what the error message said. I suggest changing it to a soft warning like "if you're claiming it's public domain but the creation date is recent, you better have a good reason that it's public domain that isn't 'thing old' ". Jruderman (talk) 23:21, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
{{PD-ineligible}}, {{PD-textlogo}}, etc. should certainly be compatible with any date. - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jruderman Please, open a Phabricator ticket about this, so that we can evaluate what is the problem. If you have problems with doing so, please let me know and I can help you with that. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 09:50, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Overriding popularly used flag image

new
old

Hi all. A new flag with more details of Republic of Formosa is made at File:Flag of Formosa 1895 detailed.svg. This seems to be a better version of the flag and thus suggested (here) to override the original file at File:Flag of Formosa 1895.svg, which is now used in many articles. What would the procedures be, and should it be replaced? Thanks. (@Swiãtopôłk: FYR) Cypp0847 (talk) 05:47, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cypp0847: I'm not sure what you mean by "override", but I'm guessing you mean "replace" and not COM:OVERWRITE. Commons is mainly concerned about the copyright status of the content it hosts and whether said content falls within its scope. How Commons files are used encyclopedically by the various language Wikipedias isn't something that Commons has any say over per se. The different language Wikipedias are separate projects with their own policies and guidelines; for example, image use on English Wikipedia is based on en:WP:IUP, but it also depends on en:WP:CONSENSUS. So, if you want to replace the older flag with the newer flag in some English Wikipedia articles, you will need to sort that out on English Wikipedia. You can try being en:WP:CAUTIOUS or try being en:WP:BOLD depending upon whether you think replacing the flag image is going to be considered contentious by others. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:12, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Marchjuly: Sorry I do mean COM:OVERWRITE. Sorry for the confusion. There are some concerns that the old flag lacks details and thus "inaccurate". But I do understand the overwrite can only be carried out those empowered to do so and would be consequential. Cypp0847 (talk) 12:49, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think this would be allowable as an overwrite per Overwriting rules. Abzeronow (talk) 17:24, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely should not be an overwrite on Commons. Source, author and purported copyright status are different. - Jmabel ! talk 20:29, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale template.

Hello,

I understand that to upload a non-free image, I have to fill out the appropriate template, and I am able to do this.

However, I don’t understand how to “copy the empty template to an image or other media file”.

Please could somebody help?

Mac Edmunds (talk) 13:18, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, which wiki we are talking about? When it comes to the English Wikipedia, File upload wizard might be useful but please specify whether that’s the wiki in question. --Geohakkeri (talk) 13:33, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Geohakkeri
Yes, sorry - English Wikipedia.
Mac Edmunds (talk) 14:12, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mac Edmunds: Commons doesn't really enter the picture here, and I don't offhand know the context of the particular phrase you are quoting, since you don't provide a link. I'm guessing the template in question is en:Template:Non-free use rationale. About a quarter of the way down that page, you can find an empty template that you can copy and paste. - Jmabel ! talk 20:33, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To revisit the question, file pages can be edited just like all other wikipages. You can upload the image and then, if needed, edit the page and add the correct templates. It’s not very complicated, really. --Geohakkeri (talk) 08:22, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A soccer team, Westchester SC, does not have a wikipedia article. I am creating one for it, but I don't think there is an image already uploaded of a logo for the team. I am not sure what to do, whether I should upload it or not, as it isnt my own work. Shmego (talk) 13:21, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shmego: Is there reason to think the logo is either in the public domain or (very unlikely) free-licensed? If not, then it doesn't belong on Commons.
You don't mention what language Wikipedia you are talking about but I'm guessing English. If so, have you read en:Wikipedia:Logos? - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you need it you can, but not to Commons. You can upload it as a non-free image here. Select the option "Upload a non-free file" upload the file and fill out the form, in the third step select the option "logo". You will have to explain the method of use, I recommend copying:
"The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing Westchester SC, a subject of public interest. The significance of the logo is to help the reader identify the organization, assure the readers that they have reached the right article containing critical commentary about the organization, and illustrate the organization's intended branding message in a way that words alone could not convey."
Once an image is uploaded, it can only be used in one article. I also recommend that you do this when your article is ready, because non-free files cannot be left unused for too long. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 21:12, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

uploading a jpg or png image

I'm finding it challenging uploading jpg or png file. Please what's the walk around? Obaje.josh (talk) 13:49, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

See COM:Image formats. PNG is good for practically anything except digital camera photographs. --Geohakkeri (talk) 13:52, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Obaje.josh: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png images as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to post permission on their official website or social media, or send it via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, it will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg or svg version, too. If you can't get compliant licenses, the images may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. You have also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg image as a new user.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:47, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Gregg Bissonette

I uploaded a picture I took of Gregg recently and I was trying to make it his main picture when you go to his page. It got placed to a group of other pictures. How can I make the one I just uploaded his main picture on his page?? Thank You. Mike Drums (talk) 01:42, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mike Drums. Did you take File:Gregg Bissonette, 2014 Music City Drum Show. Nashville, TN.jpg yourself? I know you posted this above, but I just want to make sure because Commons most likely can't keep the file if you didn't. The COM:EXIF data for the file indicates that it comes from some Facebook page? Did you take the photo, upload it to Facebook, download it from Facebook and then upload it to Commons? The general liceasing for Facebook images is not free enough for Commons purposes; so, there needs to be some way of verifying that you're the person who took the photo. Did you add a {{Cc-zero}} license to the photo posted on Facebook? Can you provide a link to the Facebook page where the image was uploaded so that someone can verify its license if you did? If you didn't, then you're probably going to need to either use COM:RELGEN or follow the instructions in COM:VRT#Licensing images: when do I contact VRT? so that your copyright ownership of the photo can be verified. I wouldn't worry about adding the image to en:Greg Bissonette until you're able to sort out the above. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:58, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I took about 20 pictures and he picked the one he liked best. I forwarded the pic from my phone to my instant messenger and downloaded it from there. So it's not on a page, just in my IM's so it would be accessible from my laptop. Couldn't figure out how to do it on my phone. Mike Drums (talk) 22:49, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I’m doing this from my phone and the format is a little different now so I apologize if this is in the wrong spot. I was with Gregg a couple weekends ago at a drum show in Nashville and he asked me to take some pictures of him and he wanted to pick a picture that was current represented himself and the kid that he uses currently on tour with Ringo Starr. The picture that’s on his main page with the seafoam green drum set is from a few years ago so he wanted to just personally get it updated and asked me to do that when I was with him. Thank you. Mike Drums (talk) 17:25, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Marchjuly: I'm sure this is legit, even if we have some hoops to leap through.
  • @Mike Drums:
    1. If this is a recent picture, why "2014" in the file name? Very confusing.
    2. It's inconvenient that you first posted elsewhere, because it makes it harder to demonstrate that you were the photographer. Is it on a public posting on Facebook? If so, could you arrange whoever posted it to add an explicit credit to you there? Then you can provide me a link to that, and I can sort it out from there. (If that's not possible there are other ways, but they are more cumbersome.)
Jmabel ! talk 02:48, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mike already explained a bit of that. It wasn’t a public posting but a instant message. I don’t know if IMs can be made public. --Geohakkeri (talk) 09:30, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn’t even notice I put 2014. I just hit 1 instead of 2. Should be 2014 as it was July 21st last month. 2024 would be correct. And it was never posted anywhere. As I mentioned I couldn’t figure out how to do it on my phone, if it’s even possible, so I forwarded it to my IM. Myself, Gregg and ppl here are the only ones that have seen this picture.
I sent him 18 photos to pick from and this is what he picked. Just trying to make that the main page pic at his request. Thank you Mike Drums (talk) 10:43, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MikeDrums: Thanks for clarifying you took the photo. Probably the best thing for you to do here would be to use COM:RELGEN to help verify your copyright ownership of the photo. Another option would be to send a COM:CONSENT email to Wikimedia VRT for verificaiton purposes. Before you do any of that, though, you might want to take a look at COM:LRV, COM:REUSE and COM:ENFORCE just to make sure you understand what it means to upload one of your photos to Commons. It's better to know what you're getting yourself into because it's kind of hard to undo things if someday you change your mind.
As for adding the image to the article, you first might want to take a look at en:WP:COI given that you do seem to have some kind of more than casual relationship with Bissonette and do appear to be doing this per his request. Please understand that this isn't because you've done anything wrong; it's just to let you know about English Wikipedia guidelines that might apply to you with respect to editing/creating content about Bissonette. Commons is mainly concerned about the licensing of the content it hosts, and not so much how it's being used on the various language Wikipedias. If got any questions specific to English Wikipedia policies or guidelines, you can ask them at en:WP:HD or en:WP:THQ. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:54, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's a better leadimage though, so I added it on en-WP. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:23, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll fix the filename. But, yes, you would do well to go through the RELGEN/VRT thing. - Jmabel ! talk 18:16, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is this considered to be the case for over-categorization?

User:Anas1712 always likes to add categories for every single thing visible in a picture, but they are a few relatively small things in the background like a gas station (see: file 1) and convenience stores (see: file 2, file 3). Is this considered to be the case for over-categorization?--125.230.85.41 08:44, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not directly. Overcategorization is generally thought to be adding both Category:FamilyMart stores in Taichung and Category:FamilyMart Taichung New HSR Store to the same image.
I can't really make out the gas station in #1 (either I don't recognize it, the resolution is too low or something else), but the categories #2 and #3 don't strike me as unreasonable. One could use the images to illustrate where these are located. (Photographers just photographing a single store tend to not provide much context, which can make it difficult to locate the store). Enhancing999 (talk) 18:11, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The gas station is at left, barely in focus, and certainly not deserving of a category here. - Jmabel ! talk 02:50, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Anas1712: for info. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:30, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Good to know, but in all cases, it's not incorrect to say the categories are technically not wrong. For me, overcategorisation is like the cases of many HK photos, where there are so many pictures are both present in multiple mother-child categories. But for my info, can we add:
For file 2, the 7-Eleven category ( I'm not sure if it's the Zhonggaotie Store, I've not yet stopped in Taichung)?
For file 2, the FamilyMart category (also not sure it's the Taichung New HSR Store, for the same reason)?
Thanks for the answer. Anas1712 (talk) 09:52, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with a pdf file

Hi. I recently uploaded File:National Geographic, April 1921, Persia.pdf, but when I want to use CropTool to extract more files, the pages are not loaded. Also, the thumbnail of the pdf file is not shown and in the File history section, Dimensions of the file is "0 × 0". What's the problem? HeminKurdistan (talk) 04:36, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@HeminKurdistan: I can't speak to the thumbnail issue, but CropTool has had all sorts of problems lately. It looks like someone may finally be taking it over.
You'd do better to report this at Commons talk:CropTool, and possibly to file a phabricator report. - Jmabel ! talk 04:46, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it's Commons:Village_pump/Technical#Problems_with_PDF_Preview. Enhancing999 (talk) 13:46, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
HeminKurdistan: Go to the archive.org source page as indicated in the file. Then scroll down on the right side to find the "SINGLE PAGE PROCESSED JP2 ZIP" file. Having downloaded that, find the page you want and, because it is is JP2000 format that cannot be uploaded to here, save a copy of that page as a jpg or png file. Preferably do any cropping before saving. No need to try and extract images from a pdf for most archive.org material as then tend to give crappy images made from a lower quality pdf. The JP2000 files are of a much higher quality. Here are a couple of files I uploaded by this method and they often replace a crappy image, such as File:The History of Little Henry and His Bearer (1826).jpg, File:S 156 Abb 107 Telephonzentrale im IX. Bezirke, Berggasse.jpg and File:Dublin and Drogheda Railway map 1855.jpg. Is this useful for you? Ww2censor (talk) 15:59, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

how to upload an educational manual written by a civil association

@Fertilizar Asosiación Civil:
  1. Are you saying you want to upload it to Wikipedia in some language (not our issue here at Commons) or to Wikimedia Commons (this site)?
  2. Can you be more specific about what the manual covers and what your organization is?
  3. Accounts are supposed to be for individuals. Here at Commons, we allow account names like the one you have, but many of the Wikipedias will consider an organizational name like that inappropriate. You might want to consider changing the account to something like "Person's name (Fertilizar Asosiación Civil|)"

Uploading postcards and bank letterheads to Wikipedia Commons

I have scans of old documents and postcards. What is the legality of uploading these? The bank letterhead is for this bank: en:Bank of Dyersburg so I am inclined to think that it would be worth trying to upload. The same goes for the postcards. These are 1940's era. Might be too recent, but I thought I would ask. Krelorian1917 (talk) 18:29, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose they are from USA? So, you can find necessary information in Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/United_States. Ruslik (talk) 19:18, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, all printed in US. One might be German, I will double check to be sure. 209.35.178.118 19:23, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Location of printing isn't the issue, it's location of publication. Pre-WWI, a lot of U.S. postcards used German printers. (Not so much after that, though, even in peacetime, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.)
Do they have copyright notices (assuming you can see both front and back of the postcard, and the whole of the document)? If not, then for anything from the U.S. before 1977, they are certainly in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 23:20, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete a redirect page?

Hi, yesterday I uploaded a file under an incorrect title, now kindly corrected by a relevant person following a "rename request" - old/incorrect name was at File:St Mary's College-1.jpg, new one is at File:St Mary's Convent-1.jpg. Currently this file is used only on a single Wikipedia page (at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lismore,_New_South_Wales) plus my own user page. I note that as part of the rename process, either the renamer or the software has created a redirect page on Commons from the old filename to the new one, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:St_Mary%27s_College-1.jpg&redirect=no ... I am thinking that this is really just "noise" now since the usage under the original name was so brief, and perhaps serves no useful purpose in the longer term, so am wondering whether it should or could simply be deleted... also who can do this if it is indeed sensible.... Thanks in advance, Tony Rees Tony 1212 (talk) 19:45, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

File redirects should almost never be deleted. However, if there is a recently uploaded file with an obvious error in the file name, some flexibility is of course permitted. --Geohakkeri (talk) 11:04, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Geohakkeri So If I interpret this as permitting a deletion in the present case, can I do it, or does it need to be done by an admin? (not sure what is the process here...) Tony 1212 (talk) 18:24, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are we allowed to use it just because it's on commons? Or do we need further evidence? Wikieditor662 (talk) 19:42, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are you asking whether we can trust that it is an accurate representation? No, we cannot. Are you asking whether it is legal to use? Yes, there is no apparent problem with the public domain status of this image, and stylistically it appears to be from roughly the date stated the 19th century. - Jmabel ! talk 22:20, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was asking if the portrait was a genuine one of Liszt and Beethoven, or if it was of something else. It appears from your answer that it is. However, why can we not trust that it is an accurate representation? Does that mean we shouldn't add it to articles? Apologies in advance for the confusion. Wikieditor662 (talk) 22:33, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's pretty crudely drawn, anonymous so we don't have any real way to know if the person who drew it had ever actually seen either of them let alone seen this scene, from an era before photography so we presumably have nothing solid to vet it against, and well into the time when Beethoven was totally deaf so whatever might have transpired he couldn't really have heard Liszt's playing. File:Beethoven Waldmuller 1823.jpg is a better-attested picture of Beethoven around this time, looking very unlike this drawing.
Looking further into this, Liszt's own description of his one encounter with Beethoven does not suggest a room full of people, and was something he talked about only decades later. So the picture is presumably more or less a fantasia. - Jmabel ! talk 03:03, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the in depth explanation. I guess I won't be using this portrait. Wikieditor662 (talk) 03:06, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Interiors of rides and attractions (including photos taken during the ride and the line queue)?

I'm sorry if this has been asked previously, but I want to upload a picture of the logo, to the event/organization I'm writing about. What is the policy on porn

I am someone who is actively trying to avoid porn sites but want to learn about sexuality in a safe way I am an adult so graphic content is fine with me I am just trying to avoid material that is explicit porn intended specifically to arouse sexual feelings non porn graphic sexual material is different i understand that thank you 172.59.72.132 03:13, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Commons really has no "policy on porn" as such. Pornography is a widespread human activity, and we certainly consider coverage of it within our scope, as is coverage of other aspects of human sexuality. Policy COM:Nudity is basically about trying to strike a reasonable balance in this area; basically, our requirements for images around nudity and sexuality are a bit more stringent than in other areas, but not dramatically different.
I would say that if you are looking for material about sexuality that generally avoids tipping over into pornography, a collection of images isn't the best place to start. You'd do better to go to the English-language Wikipedia and start from en:Category:Human sexuality. Outside of Wikimedia Foundation projects, https://www.scarleteen.com, although aimed primarily at teens, is an absolutely excellent educational site on human sexuality that tries very hard to avoid being pornographic. The bulk of the site is liable to be as useful to an adult as to the teens who are seen as its primary audience. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank for the quick response and I appreciate the answer just to clarify so looking at wiki policy sexual content on wiki commons has to serve a purpose and can’t be for sexual arousal which is what porn is
i sincerely apologize about all the questions and thanks again 172.59.72.132 03:17, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And sorry meant to clarify what mean by avoiding porn is viewing sexually explicit material that’s sole purpose is sexual arousal and from reading wiki commons just now it sound like you don’t allow sexual content that is porn in nature and that it has to have a educational purpose even if it sexualy graphic
sorry a lot have questions lol
i have ocd that causes me to question things and porn sites I stay away from 172.59.72.132 03:59, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I hope you are doing well! I am new wikipedia editor and I am confused on if I can use a photo of a famous artist and add it here. How would you know if an image of a famous artist is open to be used by anyone?

If you have "permission to use on Wikipedia", then that is not sufficient. We need a fully open licence, as described at the links given above. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:51, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Move option missing

I wanted to request renaming of File:Masaka referal Hospital.jpg, but there is no "Move" option under the "More" tab. Is this a temporary glitch? or has the method of requesting renaming changed? - Arjayay (talk) 10:58, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Arjayay: I've noticed something similar as a filemover: the "Move and Replace" option has turned back into "Move". I think the "RenameLink" gadget is broken. Looking at Special:Gadgets this might be related to the warning "The following right does not exist: writeapi". That warning appears against RotateLink, and that gadget isn't working either. --bjh21 (talk) 11:05, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Arjayay I checked and it seems absent on files, but strangely not absent on categories. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 16:17, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Immanuelle: That's because you can directly rename categories, but not files (because you're not a filemover). So MediaWiki gives you a "Move" link for categories but not files. Usually, the RenameLink gadget would add a "Move" link for files that makes it easy for you to add the {{Rename}} template, but RenameLink got broken by a MediaWiki update and needs a bit of administrator attention. --bjh21 (talk) 16:41, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This has now been corrected. CptViraj has removed the mentions of writeapi from the gadget definitions and the various gadgets are back for me at least. --bjh21 (talk) 20:44, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How would I bring attention to a deletion request?

In the sea of deletion requests, it seems somewhat likely that you may not get a response for days, weeks or possibly even months. You may have to try to actively bring attention, and point to your own deletion request.

How would I do that, apart from the Discord server? (I don't want to go there because I don't go to the Discord server basically ever, so I would seem only self-serving by going there for this) Kxeon (talk) 20:22, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We have a serious backlog in deletion requests. More admins and experienced users working on them would be good. Is there some particular reason some deletion request is urgent and needs speedy attention? If it's a copyright violation, it can be tagged {{Copyvio}}. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:34, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is this about Commons:Deletion requests/File:Emblem of Ambazonia.svg or something else? If that, it's been open less than a week, so it is not even eligible to be closed unless there were a clear, strong consensus, which there isn't. It doesn't offhand look to me like a file of much importance, whether it ends up kept (unlikely) or deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 03:40, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Permission to overwrite files uploaded from my old account.

Hi, until 2020 I edited and uploaded from User:The-, but I lost the login to my old account and was unable to recover it, so had to set up a new account. This means I am now unable to upload new versions of images I uploaded with my old account, without going through the "request permission" page. I am planning on making a series of updates to a group of dozens of images I uploaded with my old account, and it will be very laborious to go through the requesting permission page for every single one of these images. I don't know if it is within the technical capabilities of the Commons permission system, but if it is, would it be possible to grant my new account blanket, indefinite permission to modify all images uploaded by User:The-, since we are the same person? Offa29 (talk) 01:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Offa29: I believe the only way to do that would be to grant you autopatrol rights. I'm pretty sure you qualify. Apply at Commons:Requests for rights. - Jmabel ! talk 03:47, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why should we keep unused empty categories, instead of deleting them?

As far as I know, there are two extremely experienced registered users and they pointed out a problem about a user tagging the {{Empty page}} template to existing categories that are empty. I just browsed a bit and easily found many empty categories, but I can't see any sense of keeping them, so I'm wondering what good does it do us to not clean up useless categories or what are the benefits to Commons? We can assume the most extreme case: If empty categories to grow and we choose to sit (or say, nobody to clean up them), what will be the consequences for Commons?--125.230.83.100 08:44, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The template isn't just for any empty category, just for some.
There isn't really a problem in creating an empty "Joe Biden in 2015" if already have categories for the other years in the decade. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:04, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Most empty categories should be deleted, but I can think of at least two cases where they shouldn't be. One, as suggested by Enhancing999's remarks, is the rare empty category that forms part of a natural series or set where all or almost all of the others are populated. The other is a category that is clearly about to be used. For example if someone were to create a category for each day of a week-long conference a few days before it started, it would be silly to delete any empty categories there until at least few days after the conference is over. For a slightly less obvious example, for almost any category created in the last few days by an experienced user, we assume they plan to use the category in the near future if they haven't already. - Jmabel ! talk 20:06, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, there are some maintenance categories we keep even when they happen to be empty at the moment, and we seldom delete user categories unless they are ill-formed or the user in question wants to delete them. - Jmabel ! talk 20:08, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ajaywrite: you are indeed a bit confused. This appears to be a copyrighted image for which no free license exists, so it doesn't belong on Commons unless the copyright-holder, presumably the photographer, grants such a license. Most of what is on the Internet (over 95%) is copyrighted material for which no free license is offered. You should not upload anything to Commons unless either (1) it is entirely your own work, and you are granting a license, (2) a specific free license is available, or (3) it is in the {{Public domain}} both in its home country and in the United States. - Jmabel ! talk 05:42, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Attribution for existing files

I've just uploaded the file c:File:Друзья,_враги.jpg, which is a combination of the two existing files c:File:Безбожник у станка 164.jpg and c:File:Безбожник у станка 165.jpg. I'm unsure how to link this new file to the "other versions" section of these two existing files (other than manually). Is there a way to quickly interlink the three, and have I made any mistakes in attributions or uploading the new file? I'd like to repeat the process for a few other spreads. Pagliaccious (talk) 17:00, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to upload free to use images without a clear license

The City of Vancouver archive contains a lot of images, and has ownership over a lot of the images. I'd like to upload some of these, such as this image of the S.S. Smokwa for use on English Wikipedia. However, there isn't a clear license. According to the city's website, in section 3.3, that for items owned by the city "the Archives grants the patron a non-exclusive license to use the reproductions without restriction as to the nature or purpose of the use." without actually specifying the details of said license, though other sections such as 3.7 make it seemingly analogous to a CC BY license.

So when uploading this, and other images owned by the city, to wikimedia commons, how do I handle the license? Emma0mb (talk) 20:54, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Emma0mb: You could use {{Attribution only license}}, but it might be worth creating a specific template for that site that mentions these specific terms from their website. - Jmabel ! talk 22:46, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What would the best way to go about making a template be? Should I just copy the attribution only license, and what should it include? Emma0mb (talk) 22:57, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Emma0mb: There is a template for Vancouver Archives "Source" that can be used like {{VAN|CVA 447-8211.2}}, and for copyright/license permission I would use {{Attribution only license |text=City of Vancouver Archives, AM1506-S3-3-: CVA 447-8211.2, Photograph by Walter E. Frost}}. A specific template for the latter would be handy if any template-makers are reading this, though the file's notes specifically say Photographs to be credited as follows: Photograph by Walter E. Frost so not sure if the same formatting would cover other photographers in the archives. BTW the City of Vancouver Archives terms of use do suggest that their donation process includes transfer of copyright for items labeled "Rights holder City of Vancouver" and as you point out they do allow free use. @Thomassischke: Only the copyright-holder (Claudia Scherer, in this case) can grant a license; she could grant any license that Commons accepts. We usually recommend {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} or {{CC-BY-4.0}}. Either she needs to take an account and upload it herself, or she needs to post it with an indication of license on a web page (e.g. public-facing social media account) clearly under her control, or she needs to go through the COM:VRT process.
Also, please when uploading use a meaningful filename (e.g. "Claudia Scherer, 2024.jpg"), not an arbitrary string of letters and numbers. - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
