Glaser's Bakery

We need some pictures of Glaser's Bakery[1] before they close on Juli 1. Could you manage it? Thank you. --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 10:12, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not my usual neighborhood, but I'll try to get over there. Beyond My Ken (talk) 16:27, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I'm going to be able to get there before the 1st, but that might be better in any case. News reports right now show people lined up in front of the store, which would make it difficult to get a clean shot, whereas after it closes there are unlikely to be people around. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:34, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you will be able to make any pictures. But nevertheless some pictures of their "Black an White cookies" would be fine, because they are considered to be the origin of what is called here in Germany "Amerikaner". [2][3] It must (have been) be a very famous bakery. Anyway thank you for your efforts. --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 20:43, 30 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's already the 2nd and I still haven't gotten over there, my apologies for that. Unfortunately the combination of that neighborhood being by far the most difficult place to get to from my own neighborhood, and an extreme heat wave here in NYC has kept me inside in front of the air conditioner. I don't know if Jim was able to get over there or not, but it's still on my list. I hope to make it when the heat breaks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:10, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Zehlendorf Krumme Lanke Badestelle
This is how we handle the temperature here in Berlin. We even can reach the lake by bike. But I know it's nothing compared to NYC. --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 22:06, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Here in NYC, the city has public "cooling centers" where people can go to cool off if they don't have air conditioning in their homes. The city has also extended the hours of the public swimming pools. And, of course, there are beaches, both in the city and out on Long Island, many of them fairly easily reachable by public transportation. Those with the means can also head for the Catskill and Pocono Mountain resort areas, or the Jersey Shore. Still, many people just stay at home and keep the air conditioning cranked. I snapped a few, several weeks ago. However, in between I had a problem at Wikimania and have alos been busy with other matters. Jetlag and Prospect Park Wiknic and several errands that didnt get done while in Africa will tie me up for at least a week.Jim.henderson (talk) 22:37, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:2014 Fall foliage Cabrini Boulevard Hudson Heights.jpg

Category:Trees in the Northern Hemisphere in November describes much better what is on the picutre than Category:Fall foliage as the whole trees are visible, November is part of the season Fall and therefore by definition all foliage visible on trees in November is fall foliage. --Kersti (talk) 14:38, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Frankly, I think that the category is pedantic and not at all useful to our users. Beyond My Ken (talk) 17:35, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Frankly I think, that your ideas of sorting pictures are fully ok for a picture collection at least a thousand times smaller than Wikimedia Commons but absolutely inadequate for a colltection as big as Commons, where such a category would be overcrowdet within days if all people would think like you. And for people who have more exact ideas about what they are searching than "fall foliage" such overcrowdet categories are a real problem! --Kersti (talk) 18:09, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not by Clarke?

Hey, BMK. I hope you're well.
I've been doing some work on Thomas Shields Clarke, and discovered that SIRIS credits these over-pedimental groups to Maxmillian Schwarzott, a sculptor I'd never heard of and can find almost nothing about.
Just wanted to give you a heads-up on why I changed them.
Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 18:48, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. What's strange is that I cannot find now what the source was for my attributing them to Clarke. It's not in the AIA Guide to NYC and it's not in the NYCLPC designation report or the Landmarks book. I had to have taken it from somewhere, because it's not in the least my field, and I wouldn't have made it up. I just can't figure out where I got it from. Thanks for the fix. Category discussion warning

Our Lady of Pompeii Church (Manhattan) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Filename fix

Heads up, I corrected the description of a file you edited. (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pvt_Harry_Shelley_receives_British_Distinguished_Conduct_Medal_from_King_George_V.jpg) - see history tab for explanation.

You might want to correct the filename as well. I'm not sure how to do this without breaking everything. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:603:1980:C27:49EF:3720:A918:58CD (talk) 09:33, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

For some files you wanted toward move to category category:Entrances and exits of the Paris Metro you wrote "category:Entrances and exits of the Paris Metro\" (with a "\" at the end of the category name).

I did the move toward category:Entrances and exits of the Paris Metro for those file . I hope is what you wanted to do.

What is your source for the 1907-08 information? Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:33, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
First, there's no way Bernstein & Bernstein would have build a building in the 1930s. The company was done by 1910. The source is this book (Apartment houses of the metropolis), published in 1908 and uploaded on Commons. On page 248 of this book, published in 1908, the building is featured and it says that it was build in 1907-08. Thanks for your pictures by the way. Have a good night and I hope we can have a more peaceful relationship in the future. --Deansfa (talk) 05:39, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for the source, it looks good to me. The source I used is the NYC GIS map, which is sometimes accurate, but sometimes merely indicates the first record that exists in the DOB files, so a specific source such as yours is certainly better. I'm certainly willing to start over, as I think it's better for all if we collaborate instead of working against each other. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:46, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I just discovered how NYC GIS map and saw the record for 152 EAST 22 STREET. Be careful about the construction dates of prewar buildings on this website, because it relies on the PLUTO dataset which is not super accurate for build dates. The documentation about PLUTO dataset explains very clearly (page 30, paragraph "YEAR BUILT") that "Year Built is accurate for the decade but not necessarily for the specific year. Two outliers – 1910 & 1920. Structures built between 1800s and early 1900s usually have a Year Built date of either 1910 or 1920.". I would recommend to look at this dataset instead (LPC Individual Landmark and Historic District Building Data), the dates are super accurate. You can download it in CSV. Sorry for the length of the message. Thanks for your message and I'm looking forward to collaborate with each others. Best, --Deansfa (talk) 06:03, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

CropTool

In the future, I would appreciate it if you used CropTool to crop images. This tool allows users to crop images already on Commons without having to download the images. It also makes sure that, if necessary, the file has already passed license review. It also properly links the images to one another, in case an issue with them comes up later. Elisfkc (talk) 22:27, 20 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No thanks, I prefer to do it my way. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:40, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Elisfkc here. You uploaded 570 files with the original linked like |other_versions= [[File:English Country Cottage (2364756846).jpg|100px]]. I can update all of those entries to use {{Extracted from}} instead, do you want me to do that? You also won't have to bother license reviewers so much if you use {{Extracted from}}, let alone try to become one yourself. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 05:29, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, that would be fine, but your opinion of what tools I should use is irrelevant. Beyond My Ken (talk) 06:18, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done Btw, if it's about looks, we could look at a way to customize {{Extracted from}} to allow a larger or differently placed thumbnail. Swapping the thumbnail on the right and the "extracted" icon on the left would, I think, actually look better. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 08:09, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As I was looking through files I missed, I found File:Houston Street at the Bowery 2008.jpg. Was this cropped from another file? I can't find it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 08:36, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
To the best of recollection, I simply adjusted the edges a bit and re-uploaded in place. Beyond My Ken (talk) 16:29, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:36, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. Then I have no idea where the original is. Check User:DavidShankbone's deleted images. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:15, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
