The species is illustrated by Matilda Smith and described by William Botting Hemsley in "Curtis's Botanical Magazine" vol. 130 (Ser. 3 no. 60) tab. 7980 (1904) under the name × Zygocolax veitchii, where Zygocolax is described as a cross between Colax jugosus (= Pabstia jugosa) and Zygopetalum crinitum (illustration lower on this page, description here).
