Middle Armenian
Etymology
From Old Armenian վազ (vaz, “leap, jump, springing forward; run, running”). The basic sense is "something that has sprung forward, new shoot". Compare Russian побе́г (pobég) from бежа́ть (bežátʹ), English sprout (“to spring up; new growth on a plant”) for similar formations.[1] The sense "vine shoot" must have existed already in Old Armenian, from which Old Georgian ვაზი (vazi, “vine shoot”) was borrowed.
Noun
վազ • (vaz)
- vine shoot
