Middle Armenian

Etymology

From Old Armenian վազ (vaz, leap, jump, springing forward; run, running). The basic sense is "something that has sprung forward, new shoot". Compare Russian побе́г (pobég) from бежа́ть (bežátʹ), English sprout (to spring up; new growth on a plant) for similar formations.[1] The sense "vine shoot" must have existed already in Old Armenian, from which Old Georgian ვაზი (vazi, vine shoot) was borrowed.

Noun

վազ (vaz)

  1. vine shoot
