From Sanskrit मनस् (manas), from Proto-Indo-European *ménos (“mind”), from *men- (“to think”). Cognates include Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬥𐬋 (manō), Latin mens, Ancient Greek μένος (ménos) and English mind. Compare with Bengali মন (mon), Assamese মন (mon), Gujarati મન (man), Malayalam മാനസം (mānasaṁ),Marathi मानस (mānas), Telugu మనసు (manasu) and Punjabi ਮਨ (man).
