Etymology

Derived from Pali bhāsā, from Sanskrit भाषा (bhāṣā). Compare Bengali ভাষা (bhaśa), Gujarati ભાષા (bhāṣā), Hindi भाषा (bhāṣā), Indonesian bahasa, Javanese basa, Kannada ಭಾಷೆ (bhāṣe), Khmer ភាសា (phiəsaa), Khün ᨽᩣᩈᩣ, Malay bahasa, Malayalam ഭാഷ (bhāṣa), Marathi भाषा (bhāṣā), Punjabi ਭਾਸ਼ਾ (bhāśā), Shan ၽႃႇသႃႇ (phàa sàa), Telugu భాష (bhāṣa), Thai ภาษา (paa-sǎa).
