From Old French metal (metal), from Latin metallum (metal, mine, quarry, mineral), from Ancient Greek μέταλλον (métallon, mine, quarry, metal), from μέταλλευειν (métalleuein, to mine, quarry), of unknown origin, but apparently related to μέταλλαν (métallan, to seek after), also of unknown origin.
