Inherited from Malay hidup, from Classical Malay hidup, from Old Malay hidup, from Proto-Malayic *hidup, from Proto-Malayo-Chamic *hudip by metathesis, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qudip, from Proto-Austronesian *qudip. Doublet of urip and urit.

Inherited from Proto-Malayic *hidup, from Proto-Malayo-Chamic *hudip by metathesis, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qudip, from Proto-Austronesian *qudip.

First attested in the Talang Tuo inscription, 684 AD, as Old Malay [script needed] (hidup) in the form [script needed] (maṃhidupi) (current spelling menghidupi).
