Noun

hoill n (definite singular hoillet, indefinite plural hoill, definite plural hoilla)

  1. (dialectal, Trøndelag) Alternative form of hold (layer between flesh and skin fat)

Etymology 2

[edit]

From Old Norse halda. Compare Swedish hålla. Due to apocope, the final vowel is removed while writing. Due to palatalization, the ending -ld use to be written as -ill(j).

Verb

[edit]

hoill (present tense hell, past tense hoildt or hoiltj)

  1. (dialectal, Trøndelag, Northern Norway) eye dialect spelling of halde (to hold). (In case of use of "kløyvd infinitiv" it is an e-infinitive verb, because it's got an apocope.)
  2. (dialectal, Trøndelag, Northern Norway) imperative of halde
