[edit]From salap (“judge's fees”) + -i, from Arabic صَرْف (ṣarf, “money exchange; change; money”) and possibly confused with Arabic أَشْرَفِيّ (ʔašrafiyy, “gold coin; ducat”), according to Potet (2013). Another etymology suggested is from Malay se- + Malay rupiah, according to Panganiban (1972).
