Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *matˢtás (“drunk, intoxicated”), from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂d- (“wet”).
Cognate with Parthian 𐫖𐫘𐫤 (mast, “drunk”), Persian مست (mast, “drunk”). Equal to मद् (mad) + -त (-ta).
