[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian شکست (šikast), past stem of the verb شکستن (šekastan, “to break”), from Middle Persian škstn' (škastan, “to break”), from Proto-Indo-European *skeyd-, an extension of the root *skey-. Compare Punjabi ਸ਼ਿਕਸਤ (śiksat), Gujarati શિકસ્ત (śikast), Marathi शिकस्त (śikasta).
