From Maharastri Prakrit 𑀙𑁂𑀧𑁆𑀧 (cheppa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-) + -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-), from Sanskrit शेप्या (śepyā́), a feminine form of शेप (śépa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *šáypas, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeyp-o- (pole, stick) (compare Latin cippus).[1][2][3] Cognate with Marathi शेपटी (śepṭī), शेपूट (śepūṭ), Hindi छिपकली (chipaklī).
